Conti ready to roll with labelling on commercial vehicle tyres

Continental states that it tested around 500 truck and bus tyres in preparation for releasing its European label results on 1 July. The German tyre maker says it has now integrated all measured tyre data into the company’s existing internal and external SAP-supported computer systems and made it available to retailers. Unlike passenger car and van tyres, no physical label will be affixed to individual truck and bus tyres, however. Instead, Continental and its sales partners will list the data in the technical documents for the products, at points of sale, on the internet and on invoices.

HiQ opens 2012 Grid Girl competition

HiQ has launched a competition to find its 2012 Grid Girl. The winner will represent the brand and its partnership with Breast Cancer Care at the final round of Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship racing at Brands Hatch in October and act as its ambassador for ‘Pink October’; the yearly fundraising campaign for Breast Cancer Care. HiQ has targeted £100,000 as its fundraising milestone. Voting on the campaign will be stimulated through HiQ’s Facebook app, part of the brand’s vibrant social networking channels on Twitter and Facebook, where regular updates will also be posted. Nominations are open now, and a top 10 will be created after a period of voting, at which point a second phase of voting will begin, both online and through HiQ’s Facebook app.

Conti introduces truck tyre visual alignment indicators

Continental Tyres has introduced new visual alignment indicators (VAI) on two long distance truck tyre sizes; the first time such indicators have become available on truck tyres in Europe. The VAIs aim to show operators incorrect wheel alignment on trucks and trailers more easily and without the use of expensive electronic measuring systems. Conti says the system should help fleet operators to spot excessive positive or negative camber angles or too much toe-in or toe-out, all of which can decrease tyre life through uneven wear and increase fuel consumption. Early detection through a simple visual check can be carried out as part of a routine maintenance inspection.

Six fleets sign Bridgestone Truck Point contract extensions

Six companies have signed again with Bridgestone’s Truck Point network. Three companies from the UK – Downton Transport and C&H Hauliers from England, NR Evans from Wales and Yuill & Dodds from Scotland – have chosen to give Bridgestone their fleet servicing contracts, while Truck Point consolidated its position in the Republic of Ireland with two renewed contracts from National Truck Rentals in Dublin and Tops Oils in Cork.

Apollo opens first driver training centre

Apollo Tyres has opened its first formal training centre for heavy and light commercial vehicle drivers. The centre is located in Ujjain city, a location within India the tyre maker describes as a busy transportation hub, and is being run in partnership with the non-profit organisation B-ABLE. Apollo says the centre will focus on two key areas: educating those wishing to make a career in the segment on all aspects of road and vehicle safety and maintenance, and promoting a holistic approach to health and wellbeing.

Pirelli fantasy game a ‘nice tie-in’ with National Motorsport Week

Pirelli has confirmed its support for National Motorsport Week 2012, which will take place between 30 June and 8 July. The week-long annual initiative, jointly promoted by the Motorsport Industry Association and the Motor Sports Association, is a celebration of motorsport book-ended by two of the country’s premier motorsport events: the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Santander British Formula One Grand Prix. National Motorsport Week features a wide range of initiatives and activities, ranging from novice taster events run by local motor clubs to factory visits and open days at many of the UK’s premier motorsport organisations.

Halfords to use Cam Systems tyre labelling system

Halfords Autocentres has signed a deal with Cam Systems to implement its customer-facing tyre labelling programme across its 260 plus centres. Cam says its system will enable the network to address the EU legislation efficiently, while communicating a high quality, interactive image to motorists. The MIDaS based platform will allow the retailer to print out all the legal tyre label credentials on customer invoice documentation and deliver an option to present the tyre’s labelling characteristics – particularly to deal with the legislation’s “pre offer” stipulations – at point of sale and via the internet.

70 cents for every euro of turnover – Pirelli becomes tyre dealer in Sweden

It is believed Pirelli dipped deep into its purse to acquire Swedish tyre retail chain Däckia, which boasts 66 outlets and – according to Pirelli – 50 affiliated distribution partners. With a payment of 70 million euros the Italian firm offered the seller, a private equity group, 70 million attractive reasons to exit the tyre business. And now Pirelli has acquired a 100 million euro turnover retail chain in Northern Europe, with which the company sees itself buying its way into a “strong margin, high end market.” A template for such a model can be seen with the Finnish tyre maker and Pirelli competitor Nokian, who as a smaller but exceedingly successful niche market provider has focused virtually without exception on the snowbound regions of Europe and Canada and built up a strong retail chain in these regions, with which it intends to secure the company’s turnover, particularly in the local Scandinavian markets.

Michelin online guide tackles the fundamentals of labelling

To help truck, bus and coach fleets get to grips with the new EC/1222/2009 regulation on tyre labelling, Michelin has launched a dedicated tyre labelling information module on its UK website. The tyre maker says the info given at http://www.michelinonline.co.uk/trucktyrelabelling/ explains everything fleet operators need to know about the legislation that comes into force on 1 November 2012, including why it is being introduced, what tyres it covers, an overview of the different rating criteria and what benefits it offers fleets. It also notes that the label is not the be all and end all when it comes to choosing the right tyre.

Hankook launches ‘Olympic’ advertising campaign

To coincide with the London Olympics, Hankook Tyre UK is launching a new outdoor advertising campaign. The ads will be positioned in key locations in central London, including Cromwell Road, North Circular Road, Whitechapel Road, York Road and the Chiswick Roundabout, and will run until mid-September – a timeframe covering the entire Olympic Games. Hankook anticipates the location of the ads will expose thousands of games visitors to its ‘Be One with It’ campaign, an advertising series the tyre maker describes as “an important pillar” of its marketing strategy.

HiQ invests £30,000 in motorist safety guides

HiQ has launched its latest safety project for motorists: a bespoke new safety guide pack. The fast-fit network says it has invested £30,000 into the guides, which include a suite of information bulletins in one ‘handy’ pack. The network says the guides have been produced based on motorists’ feedback. It aims to cover drivers’ needs, explaining everything there is to know about keeping tyres and cars in the best possible condition comprehensively. Covering everything from the hazards associated with buying part worn tyres and winter driving tips to fuel efficiency and battery care, the guides simplify tyre and car care, as well as providing useful motoring reference material.

Trelleborg launches interactive stand at Cereals 2012

Leading tyre and wheel supplier to the global agricultural industry, Trelleborg Wheel Systems showcased its extensive range of high performance tyres at Cereals 2012, held in Lincolnshire, England, on 13-14 June.
