Conti recruits ex-Bridgestone man to head UK Technical Services

Continental has announced the appointment of Steve Howat to the role of general manager in the tyre manufacturer’s Technical Services division, UK and Ireland. Howat joins from Bridgestone, where he held the position of European Training Manager, delivering extensive technical, business and sales training to the company’s customers and staff across Europe. Having joined Continental on 1 June, he will replace respected industry expert Roger Sanders, who is retiring this year after nearly 30 years’ service with the company.

Peter Foulkes has been promoted to the position of marketing director Europe – Commercial Tires at GiTi Tire. According to the company, Foulkes has played a leading role in the rapid expansion of GT Radial and Primewell sales in the European truck and bus tyre market.

Bridgestone M853 offers North American haulers wear resistance, extra load capacity

Bridgestone Commercial Solutions has announced the North American launch of the M853, a new on/off highway all-position radial for regional hauls. Bridgestone says the M853 combines wear resistance with extra load capacity for longer service.

Kumho Tyres launches "Cash for Causes" community projects

Kumho Tyres has launched a summer campaign ‘Cash for Causes’, supported by the Korean brand’s UK dealers and a new website. The company says that it will donate £100,000 to deserving causes, charities, local groups and projects across the country via the network of ECSTA Performance Centre (EPC) independent retailers it supports in the UK through its national distributor Micheldever Tyre Services. So far, Kumho says that over 200 EPC dealers have signed up to take part in the ‘Cash for Causes’ campaign, each selecting two local community projects they feel deserve a donation. Nominated causes then go head to head in a public vote to see which one the community feels should receive the larger share.

This month’s Tyres & Accessories gives the 30 minute documentary the full treatment in the UK section of the forthcoming August magazine, however the issues raised are worth discussing in more detail.

Hankook to sponsor UEFA Europa League

Hankook has confirmed its new status as an official sponsor of the UEFA Europa League. The sponsorship agreement signed between the tyre maker and UEFA Events SA covers the period from 2012 to 2015 and gives Hankook brand exposure through perimeter board advertising in the stadiums and through media backdrops during flash interviews and official UEFA press conferences. Hankook says the new deal demonstrates another milestone in its European marketing approach, through which it aims to sustainably increase brand awareness in this, the company’s largest regional market.

Bridgestone launches “overhauled” POS materials

Bridgestone has announced an overhaul of its consumer focused point of sale material. The action comes following an “extensive review of all collateral”, Bridgestone said. The manufacturer has also formed an independent focus group of drivers, who Bridgestone says have “helped shape the new look and feel as well as content”. The new product posters and leaflets are designed to “position the product with the relevant audience” instantly, with “a plain English explanation of what the main features of the product are, closing with bullet points summarising the main benefits,” Bridgestone states

Goodyear’s German tyre stores to use e-paper solution

The Goodyear Tyre and Rubber Company’s ‘Quick Reifendiscount’ stores in Germany have given e-paper manufacturer ZBD a “significant contract” to roll out its large format displays. Working alongside installation partner Aha Trade Marketing Concepts, ZBD will provide its e-paper displays to Quick stores over the next few months. With tyre labelling mandatory in November, tyre retail stores continue to search for the best ways to display information. It seems that a flexible system such as e-paper could allow companies to integrate the new label into current product pricing displays effectively.

Trelleborg signs up as first ‘Tractor of the Year’ sponsor

Trelleborg has become first ever official sponsor of Italian magazine Trattori’s Tractor of the Year awards after signing a long-term agreement with the publication. Kumho recognised for CO2 reductions

Kumho Tires has gained “official recognition” for reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 13,339 tons over the past five years. In a press statement, the Korean company’s Australian subsidiary reported that Kumho Tires achieved this reduction through upgrading production facilities and adopting renewable energy strategies while at the same time working to develop and manufacture more efficient fuel saving tyres. Kumho’s CO2 reduction plan was launched in 2005 by Kemco (Korea Energy Management Corporation) and was devised in response to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Latest ATG ranges reflect significant R&D investment

At Reifen 2012, the Alliance Tire Group presented a new off-road tyre it says represents an innovative approach to dual-tyre configuration for excavators. Called the 528 Dual Master, the new product solves the problem of stones becoming embedded between double tyres. It does this through the use of a unique sidewall construction that enables close contact between the two tyres. “There is normally a rubber spacer between the tyres, but stones nevertheless get between the tyres and cause punctures,” explained ATG marketing communications manager Tal Rappoport to Tyres & Accessories. “The 528 Dual Master is the first tyre model for excavators that doesn’t require this spacer, and stones therefore can’t get penetrate this space.
