Run-flat tyres have often been blasted for the inferior comfort they deliver, however a recent European test gives hope that puncture avoidance may no longer equal a harsh ride. German motoring organisation ADAC and Austria’s ÖAMTC put four Bridgestone run-flats to the test, and found one to offer comparable ride comfort and fuel consumption to an equivalent standard tyre.

Car parts distributor CES (UK) has launched the tenth edition of its Workshop Essentials catalogue. Containing more than 2,000 workshop tools, consumables, and accessories, most of which are available with next day delivery throughout the UK, the catalogue “features both the tools and consumables that every technician uses every day and a huge variety of products for more specialist applications,” says marketing manager, Simon Moore.

Turkish tyre manufacturer Petlas has a new website. The customer focused site allows dealers and drivers to search products by size, segment or product name, with increased product information and more logical organisation. Oğuz Ay, director of international marketing and sales at Petlas said the company had “spent the past year listening and talking to the users of www.petlas.com”, and that the new site tries to make users’ experience “more straightforward and user friendly” as a result.
The Al Dobowi Group has appointed Tom Edwards to the position of European marketing manager. Previously export sales manager at Cooper Tire, managing customer relationships across Scandinavia, Benelux and the Mediterranean, Edwards has ten years of sales and marketing experience.
With a 15-year track record as a leader in laser wheel alignment for commercial vehicles, Haweka UK is frequently asked to supply wheel alignment systems for passenger cars. In January this year the company, which is also well known for its Haweka range of centring accessories for wheel balancing, began test marketing a 4-wheel 8CCD camera alignment system for cars and vans.
Trelleborg Wheel Systems has entered into an agreement with off-road tyre wholesaler Neumáticos Muevetierra to supply the Trelleborg agricultural range in the Mexican market. The initial portfolio on offer includes the new Maximo R1 radial range and the TH400 agro-industrial line.
Bridgestone Europe has released a new Bandag brand all-season coach and bus tread, a product claimed to offer “impressive mileage performance with [the] same tread depth and lighter to equal weight than its predecessor.”
Hankook and European touring car racing series DTM have signed an extension to their official tyre supplier deal, extending the partnership until at least 2016. DTM’s organisers have been sufficiently satisfied by the development of Hankook’s Ventus line of motorsport tyres to sign the deal ahead of schedule, while the Korean tyre manufacturer is keen to sustain the brand value and premium brand status it derives in part from this deal. Hankook added an all new option tyre specification this season, which it president & chief marketing officer/chief corporate management officer at believes allows the company to demonstrate the brand’s performance on premium brand vehicles.
When Tyres & Accessories spoke with Deldo’s Rutger Veerman in the last week of March, he and several colleagues from the Belgium-based wholesaler had just returned from the Tyrexpo Asia show in Singapore. In addition to praising the exhibition as “the best show in Asia”, Veerman shared that Deldo’s presence at Tyrexpo Asia was important as Asia represents a region that is increasingly important for the company.

Racegoers visiting their local tyre store can hand over their 2013 MCE British Superbike Championship ticket to get £26 off a set of the tyre. The offer runs throughout the 2013 MCE BSB Championship, finishing on 31 October 2013 to cover all 12-round races.
Speaking at the Auto Shanghai 2013 show, Cao Zhuangzhu, Kumho Tire (China) Sales Company Ltd’s general manager of marketing and logistics, reported sales of 100 million tyres in China as of the end of 2012. “Following the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and South Korea in 1992, Kumho Tire was one of the first foreign-funded enterprises to invest in China, and construction began on our Nanjing plant in 1994,” he added. “Today we have a total of more than 5,500 employees and an annual production capacity of more than 30 million tyres.”
If the weather in Europe is anything it is fickle, and the last couple of years have thrown several extremes our way. Hankook recognises that all-season tyres may be very much at home in our unpredictable conditions and has introduced an entirely new range of medium to long haul truck tyres for all-season purposes. The range is called Smartflex and consists of each three main sizes for steer and drive axle tyres. Hankook says the M+S marked tyres are designed to handle increased load capacities and to provide driving safety under changing weather conditions.
Shortly before Tyres & Accessories visited Van den Ban in late March, the Netherlands-based wholesaler announced plans to enter the truck tyre market. A truck specialist, Hans Bakker, has been appointed to assist Van den Ban in growing this business; Bakker, along with commercial manager Cyril Versteeg, discussed the wholesaler’s plans in relation to truck tyres.
Apollo Tyres unveiled the first of its fourth generation, or 4G tyres at the Geneva motor show in March 2012, and since the release of the Aspire 4G it has introduced further products into this latest generation line-up in Europe. Now the Indian tyre maker is releasing three 4G ranges in its domestic market, and it intends to use these to increase its share of India’s replacement passenger car tyre market.
