The first load of end of life tyres processed at Sapphire Energy Recovery’s new Manchester facility coincided with the signing of a major contract with ATS Euromaster. Now that the site is practically up and running the company has invited a number of tyre retailers and distributors to a special open day on 29 June, followed by the official press and VIP opening on 30 June.
The Watts Industrial Group has been awarded the prestigious BSEN ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management Standard by BSI. The standard is a benchmark for environmental control and the development of targets to reduce the environmental impact of the organisation’s activities.
The standard was awarded to the Watts group’s Gloucestershire site which covers rubber compounding from watts Industrial Polymers and the manufacture of industrial wheels by Watts Industrial Tyres, as well as the distribution of industrial tyres to the OEM and replacement markets.
SmarTire Systems Inc announced that Optima Bus Corporation has selected SmarTire to supply tyre pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) on its buses, including those units that Optima will manufacture for the Chicago Transit Authority. Optima is a leading manufacturer of medium-size mass transit buses, including the Opus Low-floor Bus and American Heritage Streetcar.

(Akron/Tire Review) Hankook’s Optimo H725 all-season touring tyre will be OE on the 2007 Ford Focus, Hankook Tire America Corp. announced. The tyre will be fitted in size P195/60R15. “This new Ford Focus application for our tyres is another major step forward in growing our brand position here in the U.S.,” said Bill Bainbridge, Hankook’s marketing director. “As more and more OE vehicle manufacturers select our brand with confidence, that will translate to driving more consumers to look for the Hankook brand when choosing replacement tyres.” Globally, Hankook supplies tyres to Ford, Hyundai, Volkswagen, Kia, Volvo, GM and Mitsubishi, among others.
Goodyear Marketing & Sales Sdn Bhd says that its tyres are the most preferred passenger tyres in Malaysia, commanding 33 to 35 per cent of the total domestic tyre market. Marketing communications manager Caroline Ang said the company’s tyres, sold under the Goodyear brand, were the leader in the local tyre segment. “We are confident our market share will grow as the number of cars in the country is also growing,” Ang said.
Delphi has announced the appointment of Brian Lavery as commercial director for Delphi Product & Service Solutions in the UK. Based at Delphi’s UK headquarters in Warwick, Lavery will be responsible for ensuring the company’s sales and market share targets are met. He will report to Gael Escribe, sales and service director, Delphi Product & Service Solutions, Europe.

Tyre manufacturer CEAT has said that it will commission its radial tyre factory – the only radial plant on the island – this July and be supplying radial tyres to the local market in August, with exports beginning in October. The factory cost 350 million rupees (six million euros) and will produce two ranges of tyres; one for cars and one for vans. Initially the range will comprise the most popular sizes, with others added at a later date.
A new capital support programme has been launched by WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme) aimed at creating new reprocessing infrastructure for used tyres. The capital programme will provide financial support towards the costs of plant, equipment and infrastructure for projects in the UK in order to increase recycling of used tyres into value added markets, including re-treading facilities.

Goodyear Dunlop Europe has named Mark Brickhill as general manager of its UK operation, based in TyreFort, Birmingham. Brickhill will report to Arthur de Bok, President of Goodyear Dunlop Europe with the appointment taking effect on 1 June. Brickhill replaces Dick Johnson who is retiring after 41 years’ service, the past two as UK general manager.
PallEx, which operates the UK’s largest fleet of compressed natural gas powered forklift trucks has switched to Michelin Stabil’X XZM pneumatic radial tyres in a move aimed at cutting running costs by extending tyre life. Following an 18-month trial comparing solid tyres with pneumatics, PallEx and Barloworld determined that the Hyster Fortens fitted with Michelin Stabil’X XZM tyres delivered.
Cam Systems has launched a newly designed website at www.cam-systems.co.uk. To mark the occasion, the company has also introduced a new corporate identity as part of a marketing campaign to build greater awareness and understanding within the UK tyre industry.
“Initially the site is aimed at introducing Cam’s people, products and services. All of our resources are in regular communication with our customers and we feel it essential that they have the opportunity to put faces to the names in our 30-strong team,” explained Steve Bazeley, Cam’s Business Development Director.
