The board of directors of SmarTire Systems Inc. has promoted Vice President of Sales and Marketing, David Warkentin to President & Chief Executive Officer of SmarTire. Prior to joining SmarTire in August 2005, Warkentin was the vice president of sales for Intrinsyc Software International, Inc., a Canadian public company that provides engineering services to wireless mobile device makers and licensable software for the wireless telephone handset market.
SmarTire Systems Inc. has announced that it has filed a comprehensive patent application in the United States for an external valve sensor used in its tyre pressure monitoring systems.
The company’s external valve sensors were specifically designed to address the needs of the commercial vehicle industry and offer practical installation and maintenance improvements over current solutions. SmarTire external sensors are expected to be released for sale in the second quarter of 2007.
Maywood Equipment Group has announced that it will now be the sole UK importer of Omer scissor lifts up to and including five tonnes. Miriam Rossato, marketing and sales manager for Omer commented: “Maywood is the perfect partner for us in The UK. They are prepared to invest in holding stock and have excellent delivery arrangements which often is a problem with large scissor lifts.”
Gavin Masterton, director of Maywood responded by saying “We could not have a better partner for scissor lifting than Omer. They respond very quickly to all our. They even sent an engineer to Dundee in Scotland to resolve a very complicated wheel alignment levelling system! Their range of lifts is the most comprehensive and we will be launching even more models early next year.”

We all agreed that the Maitech product offered the very best in terms of quality, performance, availability and value for money, the products were unmatched in these key areas. We provide only the best products for our customers” stated Alfred van Dijk, sales director EM at Heuver Banden.
Exide Technologies has introduced a new scheme which goes by the name of SCRAPS (Scrap Collection, Recycling and Protection Scheme) and which is designed to offer a hassle-free collection, disposal and recycling service at an affordable price. The scheme not only aims to ensure the safe disposal of waste batteries, but also safeguards customers against legal action.
Maha, a world-leader in the garage equipment sector, has confirmed it is set to use January’s Aftermarket Show as a platform for showcasing the latest product in its Dynamometer range. The event will be held at the NEC in Birmingham from 11-14 January. The company, specialists in the manufacture and supply of Brake Testing Equipment, Vehicle Lifts, and Chassis Dynamometers, is returning to the show after enjoying considerable success at the event earlier this year.
The results of a recent Auto Express test show that motorists with cars set up for and fitted with run-flat tyres must not replace them with standard tyres. The test, carried out in summer 2006, demonstrated that fitting a standard tyre to a car which was designed and set-up for run-flat tyres can cause a loss of performance and ultimately a reduction in the safety of a vehicle. The results published 11 October show that using a standard tyre with the same tread pattern can severely increase braking distances and reduce overall wet and dry handling.
The UK’s first independent magazine run-flat tyre test has named the Bridgestone Turanza ER300 RFT as “Best Buy 2006.” The extremely close results placed Continental’s PremiumContact SSR second, with Michelin’s Primacy HP ZP third overall. All three tyres were V-rated 205/55 R16 sidewall reinforced style run-flats. The test car was a BMW 320i. Auto Express carried out the assessment as part of its annual tyre test, with experts assessing some of the biggest names in run-flats in a variety of disciplines including wet handling, rolling resistance, and dry handling.
Goodyear-owned tyre maker Sava Tires, one of Slovenia’ largest exporters, has become part of a new organisational structure of 11 Central and Eastern European countries. The move has reportedly been made to make the company more responsive and does not entail moving production away from Kranj, Sava Tires said in a press release on 2 October.
Yokohama has announced that it will supply an Advan branded control tyre for a new race series that will form part of the support package for the Advan-equipped 2007 FIA World Touring Car Championship. Currently called Formula S2000, the new series will feature identical single-seater chassis powered by a 250bhp four-cylinder engine and running on control Yokohama Advan tyres.
Alcoa Wheel Products has announced that it will install a new Dura-Bright line at its manufacturing facility in Székesfehérvár, Hungary. The new line will be the third such facility and will provide a significant addition in wheel capacity. Both passenger car and commercial vehicle wheels will be processed through this new line in Hungary. The new facility will begin producing Dura-Bright XBR wheels in 2008.
The Yokohama Rubber Co. Ltd. has announced that it is to establish a wholly-owned subsidiary in New Delhi, India in January 2007. Named Yokohama India, the new company will initially operate as a tyre sales and marketing company. However, in the future, it is planned to become Yokohama’s local headquarters in India for coordinating any future expansion of business such as manufacturing tyres and marketing automotive hoses and sealants. It will have a start-up capitalisation equivalent to approximately 50 million yen (334,468 euros).
Pirelli Tyres has been selected as the control tyre manufacturer for the Tesco 99 Octane MSA British Rally Championship. The three-year agreement with Pirelli sees the BRC introducing a prize fund to be spread across all classes in the Championship with every finisher receiving prize money on every round. In addition to the substantial prize fund, Pirelli has introduced a driver development scheme unique to the BRC which, under their direct support, will see the winner being progressed in their careers.
Marangoni are pitching their Mythos UHP tyres directly into the hot performance market with a unique media project partnered by top tuning magazine Redline. Progetto Marangoni is the name of the project for a radical, no-holds barred makeover of a Toyota Yaris, shod with Marangoni rubber. The Yaris will sport a mid-engined 300bhp Toyota MR2 Turbo – and that’s just the start.

Hankook’s truck tyre division is probably the fastest growing part of the UK truck tyre market. According to Tyres & Accessories’ research, in just a few years the UK truck wing of the South Korean manufacturer has grown to the point that it controls between 6 and 8 per cent of the UK truck tyre replacement market. Of course the exact figure depends on who you ask and which figure you put on the total market size, but either way it is obviously an achievement.
