Smithers Appoints VP of Polymer Analysis

Smithers Scientific Services (SSS) Inc. has appointed Daniel J. Riley as vice president of polymer analysis, a newly created position. According to the company, Riley (37) will assume responsibility for all SSS Akron Laboratory businesses, including physical/mechanical testing, analytical testing, tyre service production and a new polymer consulting group. “Dan brings to Smithers significant experience in scientific management, product development and business acumen that will enhance our well-earned reputation of providing creative solutions for our global client base,” said Jay H. Lutz, SSS vice president and chief operating officer.

SITR Invests £4 million in Tyre Recycling

Cheshire-based IT recycling firm, has invested hefty £4 million on adding tyre recycling to its Middlewich plant. The company reports that it plans to open five other similar facilities throughout the UK and more in mainland Europe during the next two years. SITR is reportedly 90 per cent there in regards to installing new equipment for the plant, which has been brought in from Canada. As a result, the company announced that it will now also produce the Dunweedin range of rubber mulch, crumb and chippings at the Middlewich plant.

According to a letsrecycle.com report, Secure IT Recycling (SITR) was established in 2001 and focussed on secure document and IT equipment disposal until the beginning of this year when it began operating as a tyre recycler.

Sales at Goodway Integrated Industries have been healthy these last few years, to say the least. In 2007, the company reported turnover of RM209 million (42.2 million euros), 70 per cent of which was derived from its rubber compound products and the remainder from retreading operations. Goodway attributes a proportion of its good fortune during the last few years to its then managing director, Alison Wong, whom the company has called “a driving force behind Goodway’s many successes.”

Toyo Tire USA Increases Prices by up to 10%

On 1 October 2008 Toyo Tire U.S.A. Corp. will increase consumer (passenger and light truck) and commercial (truck and OTR) tyre products by up to 10 per cent. “The cost of raw materials, energy, and transportation continues to rise at a steep rate, making it necessary for us to increase our prices,” said Steve Weinger, senior vice president, sales & marketing, Toyo Tire USA Corp.

Mastercraft Deal “Mutually Satisfactory”, Says Silverline International

Mastercraft Tires, an associate brand of Cooper Tire & Rubber, has appointed Warwick-based Silverline International as its official UK distributor. T&A spoke with Silverline’s Chris Dawson about the new range, and what attracted the company to the brand.

“We had been speaking with Cooper Avon over a period of two years, and they offered the Mastercraft brand to us in a mutually satisfactory deal,” explains Mr. Dawson. “For some time we had been looking long-term for a partner that could give continuity of supply. Michelin Development Issues North Staffordshire a Challenge

In response to recent figures that show North Staffordshire to be the worst performing region for new business development and start-ups, Michelin Development has issued a challenge to companies in the area to become more entrepreneurial.

Newly released statistics from Michelin Development Ltd – the business development arm of Michelin Tyre Plc – show the North Staffordshire region to be the lowest ranking of the four regions – East Lancashire, Dundee and Ballymena – where the Michelin Development fund is available to firms. Having only two years ago accounted for 48 per cent of all the jobs created through investment assistance from the Michelin Development fund, North Staffordshire now finds itself in alarming decline with no new loans or jobs created in 2008.

Ceat Chooses Consultancy Over Strategic Partner

Ceat Limited is reportedly no longer seeking a strategic partner for its planned radial facility in Baroda, India, and is instead receiving technological assistance and know-how from a US based consultancy firm. The tyremaker has sought a partner for assistance in setting up a more than Rs 6 billion (£72.6 million) truck and bus radial factory for more than a year, and in February Sales and Marketing vice-president Arnab Banerjee felt confident enough on the likelihood of this to say that Ceat “should be able to finalise the partners soon.”

Pirelli Appoint New Aussie Marketing Manager

Pirelli Tyre has appointed Richard Butler, the former New South Wales and Queensland sales manager, to the newly created position of marketing manager for Pirelli Australia.

Butler will work closely with Pirelli Tyres Australia managing director, Roberto Righi, who stated, “We are delighted that Richard will be leading our sales and marketing strategy into the future. Steely Determination

The UK’s number one wheel balancing weight maker, Trax JH, is in the process of expanding its production of clip-on balance weights to include steel. The steel products are expected to hit the market in the first quarter of 2009, following the installation of new machinery at the expanded Trax factory in Wales. More details are expected to follow when production gets underway at the end of 2008.

Kumho Reports Strong Customer Satisfaction Survey Results

Kumho Tires reports that its Solus KR21 tyre, aimed at the North American market, has come out on top in category in the 2008 half-yearly consumer satisfaction survey carried out by the country’s largest on-line tyre distributor. The Tire Rack survey, which can be found at tirerack.com/survey/index.jsp, included a total of 27 tyres in the standard touring all-season tyre category, and the Kumho product was declared joint winner along with the Yokohama Avid TRZ.

The Kumho KR21 received high scores in all 12 survey categories, including intention to re-purchase, ride comfort, steering responsiveness, wet traction, ice traction, deep snow traction, light snow and deep snow traction. Particularly high scores were received in the areas of ride comfort, tread wear, and traction on roads. Tire Rack also posted its own test results of the Kumho tyre on its website, commenting that this standard touring all-season tyre meets the needs of drivers of coupes, sedans, and minivans by providing excellent ride comfort and a low noise level. The online distributor assessed the tyre to be durable, resistant to abrasion, low-noise, and high-performance, providing excellent steering and cornering performance to drivers.

Kumho Address the Question: Who in the UK Needs Winter Tyres?

Kumho Tyres has been an established supplier of winter tyres for the Scandinavian and Central European markets and therefore has a wide range of treads to cope with all the varieties of adverse weather conditions that characterise the season in these parts of the world. For these markets, the weather is the overbearing reason for the comparative strength of the cold weather tyre market; they are the traditional stronghold for companies marketing products capable of dealing with the icy climate.

India’s MMTC Closer to Chinese Tyre Imports

India’s state run MMTC trading company appears to be progressing with its plan to import and market Chinese commercial vehicle tyres in India. According to reports, the company has already identified a US-based tyre manufacturer with a production site in China as the possible source of tyre imports on an ongoing basis. The initial volume order is anticipated to be placed in September or October.

The US based company has not been specifically named, however sources say the firm first entered China in 2006 and recently acquired a production facility there. The company was incorporated in 2005 through a series of mergers and also has production bases in Europe and North America.

BBS OEM Wheel For Performance Lexus

BBS of America has released its latest OEM alloy wheel fitment.
