Motors.co.uk Poll Reveals Car Gadgets Driving Us Crazy

Used vehicle website motors.co.uk is urging manufacturers to go back to basics after a survey of 726 UK motorists revealed 70.6 per cent of drivers polled are being ‘driven to distraction’ by car gadgets and would feel safer if they had fewer accessories in their vehicles.

The survey, which motors.co.uk said canvassed attitudes towards 21st century driving distractions, highlighted that more than half (52.9 per cent) would like to see fewer ‘non-essential’ features in cars to help avoid confusion. In-car add-ons were cited as greater distractions than noisy passengers, convoluted road signs and even the family dog.

Cooper to Supply British Formula 3

Tyre supply and title sponsorship for the British Formula 3 International Series, the domain of Avon Tyres since 1982, will be handed over to parent company Cooper Tire as of next year.

“Through our many years in British F3 with the Avon brand, we know that it is a genuine stepping stone of great drivers on the way to F1, and therefore requires the very best components in every area,” said Cooper Europe managing director Julian Baldwin. “Avon Tyres is very well established in British and European motor racing and, as Cooper Tire grows as a brand in Europe, we want it to stand for the same standard of quality. Cooper’s racing tyres deserve to be allied with a high-profile championship in Europe and you don’t get much bigger than British F3.”

Michelin is Leading Online Tyre Brand in 2008

Michelin is once again the leading tyre brand on the internet, according to research conducted by online analysts Envisional. The unique online brand ranking exercise, which has been published exclusively in association with Tyres & Accessories since 2005, also found that Pirelli was the biggest faller and that the gap between premium and following brands is widening.

The Michelin brand retains the top spot from the 2007 report and has performed strongly online since the first tyre branding analysis in 2005 when it came third. The 2008 report shows the French manufacturer’s strongly positive ‘sentiment’ score kept it right out in front this year, though Dunlop (climbing from third to second) and the strongly improving Goodyear (up from sixth to third) also turned in good performances. Bridgestone will not be so happy, having lost ground a little and dropped down the sentiment rankings from second to fourth place.

Yokohama Canada Has New Marketing Director

Jonathan Karelse has been named director of marketing at Yokohama Tire (Canada) Inc., replacing Henry Pietraszek who left the company earlier this year.

Karelse joined Yokohama Canada in 2005, and has served on the Rubber Association of Canada’s Statistics Committee for the past four years. In his new role, he will be responsible for all of the company’s marketing operations. (Tire Review/Akron)

2008 has been a “record-braking” year for Brake Engineering, with the company developing more products in the space of 12 months than every before. Cheaper Rubber Doesn’t Equal Cheaper Tyres – Indian Manufacturers

Despite the prices for natural rubber in India dropping more than 32 per cent in the last two months, tyre manufacturers in this country appear reluctant to follow suit with their own prices. The price of natural rubber fell below the Rs 100 ( ) a kilogram mark on October 7, the first time it has done so this year after rising to a high of Rs 140 ( ) per kilogram in August. The fall in the price is attributed to a decline in crude oil prices and a slide in international rates for latex. Further decreases in the price of natural rubber are also expected in India, the result of peak production season supply and diminished purchasing from industrial users.

Avon Tyres Extends British GT Title Sponsorship

Avon Tyres has formalised a deal with British GT Championship organisers SRO to continue its title sponsorship of the UK sportscar series for an additional three years, until the end of 2011. The brand completes its existing three-year tenure as supplier and title sponsor of the championship at Donington Park on the weekend of October 11 and 12.

Tyre supply for the British GT has been in Avon Tyres’ hands since 2006, and in that time thousands of GT tyres have been raced for more than 120,000 miles. “We have enjoyed the first three years of working with the British GT Championship,” said Cooper Europe managing director, Julian Baldwin. “The mix of cars and their very different handling characteristics really tests our expertise, but so far our crew has risen to the challenge, and they will relish another three seasons of doing so with a field of such high-powered machinery.”

Goodyear Releases Aviation Tyre for Business Jet Sector

The Goodyear has introduced its Flight Eagle LT (Light Turbine) tyre for the rapidly growing entry level, very light and light jet business segments. The new tyre is an extension of Goodyear’s Flight Eagle line of aviation tyres, a leading choice for business jets.

“Throughout our 100 year history, Goodyear Aviation has been involved in many aviation developments,” said Pierre Jambon, general manager of Goodyear’s Global Aviation Business. “From supplying tyres to the Wright brothers, to providing the right tyres for Embraer’s newest personal jets, we have earned our reputation as an innovator. Trelleborg Raises Industrial Tyre Prices 7%

Trelleborg Wheel Systems has announced that it will increase industrial tyre prices by between 7 and 10 per cent. In a statement dated 9 October the company explained that the increase had been precipitated by recent raw material price increases throughout the year. The price increase has already been implemented in the US and in the Asian-Pacific region. Roberto Zampieri, marketing manager for Europe, explained: “Numerous actions have been undertaken to streamline and cut internal costs. However, due to frantic market conditions, we have to take this action.”

Farming by GPS a Goodyear Farming Innovation Award Contender

Llanystumdwy, North Wales farmer Arthur Parry, who has invented a seed drill that used GPS technology to sow patterns and logos into the ground, has become one of three finalists in the Goodyear Farming Innovation Award 2008.

Amerityre Ships Five New Light-Weight Fill Machines

Amerityre corporation – the Boulder City, Nevada-based research and development company working with proprietary polyurethane technologies – has reported the shipment of five light-weight fill machines for its high-quality polyurethane foam for use in the commercial tyre fill market.

Each fill machine is expected to pump between 100,000 to 200,000 lbs of fill material annually, although the capacity of each machine is more than 500,000 lbs per year. The company expects to place an additional six machines with other potential customers this fall. The fill machines are being sold to new customers in combination with Amerityre’s tyre fill material, which is marketed under the name Amerifill. The material is based on Amerityre’s “flat-free,” closed-cell, environmentally friendly polyurethane foam technology.

Goodyear Tire & Rubber has elected Stephanie A. Streeter, former chairman, president and chief executive officer of Banta Corporation, to the company’s Board of Directors. “Stephanie Streeter is a respected business leader who led sales and earnings growth for a successful consumer products company and drove record revenue growth during challenging times with a global printing and supply chain management firm,” said Goodyear chairman and CEO Robert J. Keegan. “Her business leadership experience and marketing knowledge will be of significant value to our board of directors.”

Cooper Launches Rebate Promotion

With its U.S. plants back on-stream, Cooper launched a national rebate promotion. The “Take the Money and Ride” promotion, which runs through Dec. 31, gives consumers a $50 rebate with the purchase of four qualifying Cooper tyres at participating dealers nationwide. “We are confident in the quality and performance of our tyres,” said Hal Gardner, Cooper vice president of marketing. “A large-scale event like the national tyre sale gives us the opportunity to share that quality and performance with consumers at a price that is affordable even in a tight economy.”

The promotion features a mail-in rebate of $50 for consumers buying a set of four Cooper CS4 Touring, Cooper Lifeliner GLS or Discoverer ATR and H/T tyres. Cooper said the national effort will be promoted on commercials airing on a number of TV channels, including ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, Versus, Raycom Sports and Fox Sports Regional, as well as with in-store POS materials.
