Mitas speeds up US plant plans, consolidates brands

Mitas Tires North America Inc. said it is boosting its investment in its new plant in Charles City, Iowa, in a move to hasten build of plant capacity. The 19 per cent investment boost takes to $51 million the amount Mitas is putting into the facility, and will shorten the construction project from five to three years. The additional funds will be directed toward tyre building equipment and curing presses, and by late 2013, the factory capacity is planned to reach 12,000 metric tons of tyres annually. In addition, Mitas officials said that tyres produced at the plant will bear the “Mitas AC” marking, with Mitas phasing out the Continental agricultural tyre brand in North America next year.

New car market rises after 13 month decline: SMMT

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has reported that the UK has seen the monthly new car market rise for the first time in over a year. August new registrations rose by 7.3 per cent to 59,346 units, representing the first monthly rise since June 2010. The rise was mainly the result of increased private demand, up 10.7 per cent, though fleet business also grew 4.5 per cent. The main car size to benefit was the ever-popular Supermini segment, which rose by 17.6 per cent to account for 37.3 per cent of the August market. Outlook for the rest of 2011 remained “challenging” according to the society.

China’s clean oil production ‘unlikely to grow’

China’s production of treated distillate aromatic extract (TDAE) – so-called ‘clean oil’, is “unlikely to grow significantly” according to a report published in online chemical industry journal icis.com. The reason? The “poor demand for the product” which itself is probably due to the fact that it costs 30 per cent more than the regular aromatics-based rubber oil.

Analysts note improved Schaeffler outlook, continuing risks

Responding to Schaeffler Group’s recently published second quarter results, including a margin of 15.3 per cent for the quarter, financial analysts have praised the “very respectable results”. However, writing in an investor’s not dated 2 September, Morgan Stanley also noted risked associated with the company’s outlook and pointed out that margins were down 150 basis points year-on-year and 220 basis points quarter-on-quarter due to “higher raw material costs and ongoing expansion costs.”

Avon to honour Castle Combe’s 60th anniversary

Avon Tyres has announced that it will support the Castle Combe race event held on September 3 to honour the Wiltshire track’s 60th anniversary. Avon’s global motorcycle sales manager Graham Matcham said, “We have a very close working relationship with Castle Combe and with both companies being so near it is understandable that we have used our ‘local’ circuit almost constantly over the last 60 years to help develop our world-beating tyres. We are delighted to be taking part in this exciting event and are looking forward to showing Castle Combe’s visitors our 100th anniversary display.”

Trelleborg announces largest super single tractor tyre ever produced

Trelleborg Wheel Systems has announced that it will introduce the TM1000 High Power tyre at the Agrotechnica exhibition held between 15 and 19 November, 2011 in Hannover, Germany. With a height and overall diameter of 2,300mm and a 46” rim, the manufacturer says the TM1000 is the largest super single tyre ever produced. It is engineered to meet the requirements the new generation of tractor engines and transmissions, a segment whose specifications have continued to grow in power and size alongside farm sizes and the increased use of agricultural contractors.

Schaeffler Group financials: growth in 1H 2011

The Schaeffler Group says its first six months in 2011 have “set new records in sales and operating results”. The company has grown its net income to 641 million euros in the period, with EBIT rising 20 per cent to 883 million euros and margin at 16.4 per cent. The company expects sales to increase by “at least 10 per cent” and has an EBIT margin target of “more than 13 per cent” for the year. Schaeffler’s sales in the first six months rose by 18 per cent to approximately 5.4 billion euros.

Pirelli Slatina factory extension to make car tyre plant its biggest

The Prime Minister of Romania, Emil Boc has inaugurated the extension of Pirelli’s tyre factory in Slatina, accompanied by the Italian manufacturer’s chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera, and the Italian ambassador in Bucharest Mario Cospito. The full 160 million euro extension, begun in 2008 and to be concluded in 2013, will increase production capacity from 7 million passenger car units at the end of 2011 to 10 million by the end of the extension project and the extension of its area. Pirelli says the plant is already one of its most modern, and will become its biggest passenger car tyre plant when the extension is complete.

Government targeting Bosch, Continental, Schaeffler for UK manufacturing investment

The British government is attending the Frankfurt Motor Show with the intention of targeting automotive suppliers such as Bosch, Continental and Schaeffler for discussions on potential investment in UK manufacturing. According to a report published by The Telegraph on 29 August, the government has “drawn up a list of foreign manufacturers that it wants to attract to the UK in order to boost output and help rebalance the economy.” The article continues by explaining that Mark Prisk, minister for manufacturing, will attend the Frankfurt Motor Show (also known as IAA Car) later this month.

South African manufacturers await court decision

Persistence may soon pay off for South Africa’s tyre manufacturers. In early September the Supreme Court in the city of Bloemfontein will hold the final hearing on an appeal regarding the dumping of Chinese tyres in South Africa. If the decision goes its way, the local industry will be given the means of resisting something said to be injuring its viability.

Interstate invites customers to drive in Arctic circle challenge

Titan CEO: ‘markets are going higher’

Maurice Taylor, chairman and CEO of Titan International has sought to add clarity to forecasts of what is happening in the agriculture, construction and mining markets by pointing out that the firm expects to receive three-digit millions of dollars worth of orders: “I’ve had a number of shareholders and analysts call and e-mail asking what’s going on in the farm, construction and mining markets…The majority of these e-mails show concern as to why there’s not more positive guidance going out from the big boys in equipment manufacturing for 2012…”, he explained, adding:

Starco enters Baltic, CIS JV with Tente

Starco has announced that its Eastern Group (SEG) and Tente have established a new joint company, Tente SIA, which will handle sales and support of Tente products in the Baltic States and the CIS region. Tente will be the majority shareholder of the company, which hopes to build on the existing sales and support structure SEG has established in the region since 2005, when the German parent company first sought the support of Starco in its endeavours to establish itself in the region.

Dow, Lehigh partner to develop sustainable tyre rubber

Specialty chemical and advanced materials manufacturer Dow Chemical Company and Lehigh technologies, manufacturer of sustainable, micronised rubber powders, have announced their intention to collaborate in order to develop sustainable materials for the tyre industry. Under this partnership, the two companies will combine proprietary technologies to create modified rubber particles, a programme that will combine Dow's expertise in polymer chemistry with Lehigh's strength in sustainable rubber compound development and testing.

Triangle to work with University of Akron in rubber and elastomer research projects

The city of Akron boasts strong credentials for being the tyre industry capital of the United States. Back in the US industry’s glory days it went by the name of “Tire City” and was home to the four major domestic players, Goodrich, Goodyear, Firestone and General Tire. Goodyear is the only one of this quartet to retain its main domicile there, the other three having been respectively acquired by Michelin, Bridgestone and Continental, yet in recent years new arrivals have also chosen Akron as home. Today both BKT and Trelleborg operate their national operations out of the city and Bridgestone’s US Technical Center is also located there. As of August 19, Chinese manufacturer the Triangle Group has added its name to this list with the opening of its US headquarters and research and development company.
