Michelin takes a fresh look at road safety with Primacy 3

When Michelin launches its Primacy 3 into European replacement markets in February 2012 the tyre will, the manufacturer states, open a “whole new era in road safety.” What Michelin means when making this assertion is that its successor to the Primacy HP has been developed based on research and behavioural analyses that revealed a number of unexpected safety-related facts. By taking a fresh look at accidentology – the study of accidents – Michelin says it has been able to move beyond preconceived safety ideas and provide road users with meaningful solutions.

Trelleborg hosts Massey Ferguson’s 7600 Series 185hp – 235hp tractor launch

Trelleborg Wheel Systems’ manufacturing facility in Tivoli, near Rome, Italy, was the venue for Massey Ferguson’s international presentation of its completely new MF 7600 Series tractor range. The event, held on 15 and 16 September 2011, was attended by key management from Massey Ferguson and Trelleborg as well as specialized media from 16 European countries.

Selleck assumes Michelin North America leadership

On October 17, Michelin North America’s Richard Wilkerson handed over the top job in the company to Pete Selleck. US-born Selleck, previously president of Michelin’s Truck and Bus division, returned from his France-based position to take over as chairman and president of Michelin North America after Wilkerson announced his intention to retire. As chairman and president, Selleck assumes responsibility for coordinating all Michelin activities in Canada, Mexico and the United States; Wilkerson remains with Michelin as chairman emeritus.

Bridgestone Europe names first COO

As reported yesterday, a new CEO and president is set to replace Makio (Mac) Ohashi at the helm of Bridgestone Europe (BSEU) at the start of January 2012. This change of top management will be accompanied by the creation of a new position within the company, that of chief operating officer. Bridgestone Europe has named Mitsuhira (Mike) Shimazaki as the first incumbent in this newly-created position. As COO, the current senior vice-president of Sales and Marketing at Bridgestone Europe will continue to manage the company’s Sales and Marketing organisations and additionally assume responsibility for Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management.

Yokohama adds service training centre to Thailand test facility

Yokohama Rubber has opened a new facility at its Thailand-based Tire Test Center of Asia. The new ‘Tire Service Training Center’, which was officially inaugurated on October 14, will initially be used as a base for training sales representatives and technical services staff from Yokohama tyre sales companies in the Asia region; Yokohama Rubber says it plans to utilise the centre to train technical services and other staff from other parts of the world “in due course.”

Toyo signs deal to develop Nitto brand in China

The five-year plan for Toyo Tire & Rubber’s Nitto brand leading up to 2015 is to increase sales volume some 250 per cent from its current level of 6.75 million tyres per annum, an increase that will see the Nitto brand’s proportion of total Toyo sales grow from nine to 15 per cent. To achieve this, the tyre maker intends to boost sales in its established North American market plus introduce the brand into other regions, including Asia, South America and Oceania.

USW questions tyre tariff opponent’s ‘conflicting position’

Campaigning for the next US presidential election is underway, and even candidates’ positions on tyre-related issues are being held up to the light for further examination. One candidate to find this out is Republican hopeful Mitt Romney, who has been criticised by United Steelworkers (USW) International president Leo W. Gerard over inconguencies between current campaign claims and his previous position on Chinese tyre tariffs.

Report: 2010’s new car sales helped repair puncture in tyre market

Higher new vehicle registrations in 2010 helped to repair a price deflation puncture in the UK tyre and tube market in 2009. According to a new report published by Key Note, the tough economic conditions in 2009 resulted in the UK market value for tyres and tubes deflating by 8.4 per cent at manufacturers’ selling prices (msp). Their view is that a boost in new vehicle registrations in 2010 and inflationary price increases helped the apparent market undo this, growing by 12.6 per cent in 2010.

WBCSD research: tyre wear particles are safe

CEOs from 11 leading tyre companies have announced results from an international research project studying the potential environmental and health impacts of tyre materials and tyre road wear particles. The research reportedly shows that “there are no adverse effects from inhalation exposures to tire and road wear particles” and “the concentration of tyre and road wear particles in air and sediment were well below toxicity levels.”

The group of tyre CEOs of firms based in Europe, Japan, Korea and North America met outside Washington, DC on 7 October to review the project’s progress and set a forward-looking agenda for continuing research. The group formed the Tire Industry Project (TIP) in 2005.

Michelin opens its doors in ‘See Inside Manufacturing’ apprenticeship open day

Yesterday (11 October) Michelin held an open day designed to encourage young people to learn more about manufacturing and potentially become apprentices. Michelin hosted the open day at its facility in Stoke-on-Trent as part of the government-backed “See Inside Manufacturing” scheme. Pupils and students from five Stoke-based schools and colleges visited the site in Campbell Road. A second open day is planned for Thursday 13 October.

Other events took place at the site time in automotive manufacturing centres across the country including several at sites across the West Midlands including Jaguar Land Rover and Aston Martin.The automotive sector is the first industry to support the nationwide project.

Starco setting up solid tyre plant in Sri Lanka

Danish firm Starco’s strategy for the years 2010 to 2014 is to grow its aftermarket business from 40 to 50 per cent of the total and to double turnover by 100 million to 200 million euros by 2014. As part of its global strategy, the company has announced the establishment of a tyre manufacturing plant in Sri Lanka. The new plant, which represents an initial capital investment of around two million euros, will specialise in the manufacture of solid rubber tyres. These will be marketed worldwide under the Starco brand name.

Tremcar chooses Aeolus as OEM supplier

Aeolus has been selected as an original equipment supplier to tank trailer manufacturer Tremcar. The Canada-based company has decided replace its existing OEM tyre brand with Aeolus tyres at its three Canadian manufacturing facilities; Aeolus will supply a variety of products, mixed-service tyres, all-position tyres and rib tyres.

Solideal UK celebrates 20th anniversary

Solideal UK has marked its 20th year anniversary by opening a service centre in Birmingham, the company’s 15th outlet. Hoping to tap into a wealth of opportunity in the area, Solideal UK, which specialises in tyres for fork lift trucks, has recently signed a three-year lease for a 1,626 square foot unit on SEGRO’s Kings Norton Business Centre (KNBC).

Lock-out the latest problem for Dunlop India plant

Dunlop India Ltd has informed the Bombay Stock Exchange of its decision to suspend operations at the company’s Sahaganj factory. In a lengthy letter outlining the various problems the company has faced at this factory since acquiring the tyre manufacturing business in 2005, Sahaganj plant manager M A Khan said it is no longer “possible to keep the factory open, continue to make payment of unproductive wages to idle workers and take risk for the safety and security of [the] plant and its employees.”
