Michelin to invest £50 million in UK manufacturing sites

Michelin Tyre PLC has announced that Michelin Group has agreed to invest up to £50 million in its UK manufacturing sites at Ballymena, Dundee and Stoke-on-Trent over the next six years. This investment plan will be supported by grants from the UK and Scottish governments and will help the company increase production capacity and help secure employment at all three of its UK production sites. Implementation of these plans has already begun at Dundee with the hiring of 140 people to fill newly created positions and the construction of a building extension to house new production equipment. In Stoke work has also commenced with the conversion of an existing building, ahead of the installation of new state-of-the-art equipment for the manufacture of the latest generation Michelin Remix truck tyres.

Tools for electric and hybrid vehicles

Tool manufacturer Facom is introducing a new range dedicated to the safe maintenance and repair of hybrid and electric vehicles. Known as the EVT (Electric Vehicle Tools) range, these insulated tools have been designed specifically to protect mechanics working on electric and hybrid vehicles. The "high voltage" systems in these vehicles can have up to 500 volts running through some cables – enough to cause serious harm or even death.

Rubber 'issue' causes temporary production halt at Dunlop Aircraft Tyres

Birmingham-based Dunlop Aircraft Tyres halted new and retread tyre production during the week commencing 15 November after identifying a “potentially sub-standard rubber” supply. According to the Birmingham Mail, managers at the Castle Bromwich plant suspended manufacturing for three days following a “potential issue” with the raw material.

L-Ray offers differometric tyre analyser for under $100,000

Non-destructive tyre testing equipment provider L-Ray has launched its newest differometric tyre analyser model for the tyre manufacturing and retreading industry. The new MDA-48 series machines will use the same differometric technology as previous, more expensive models, but in a manual load/unload, two-camera configuration with a base price of under $100,000.

This year’s Global Tire Expo a huge success, says TIA

The Tire Industry Association (TIA) has reported the “huge success” of its Global Tire Expo, held in conjunction with the US-based SEMA trade show. According to the TIA, this year’s event attracted a record number of attendees and exhibitors, with more than 132,000 people attending the co-located exhibitions and 61,000 buyers in attendance. This, the association adds, signifies the value that the Global Tire Expo and SEMA have for the wholesaler and manufacturing community.

Michelin planning Thailand elastomer composite plant

Michelin Siam is making preparations for a rubber composites production facility in Thailand. The tyre maker has awarded the contract to build the elastomer composite plant to energy industry project management, engineering and construction company Technip, who will set up a turnkey facility in Songkhla Province’s Southern Region Industrial Estate. The project is expected to be completed in the beginning of 2013.

Tyre majors form Hungarian trade association

Seven major tyre makers with individual distribution units in Hungary have joined together to form the Hungarian Tire Association. The association, which will be known by this English name (or by its abbreviation, HTA), boasts Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear, Hankook, Michelin, Pirelli and Vredestein as its founding members and has been set up to represent tyre manufacturers and distributors with a presence within the country. The HTA also states its purpose is to represent “the legitimate interests of the industry.”

Bridgestone to build 50th tyre plant

To meet growing global demand for passenger car radials, Bridgestone Corporation has decided to erect a new plant in Vietnam. The company will invest 35.5 billion yen (£286.2 million) in the project, which is expected to enter production in the first half of 2014. When production reaches full capacity in the first half of 2016, the Vietnam plant will manufacture some 27,400 tyres per day and boast a workforce of around 1,900 employees.

"It is official": Union City mayor announces Titan plant purchase

Following speculation, the mayor of Union City Terry L Hailey has confirmed Titan Internationsl's purchase of the former Goodyear plant in Union City, Tennessee in a Facebook status update. Hailey's Facebook message reads: "Good News! Titan Tire has bought the Goodyear facility in Union City. We look forward to a lasting relationship with Titan. It is official."

Pirelli: all nine-month indicators improved

Pirelli & C. SpA has reported that in the nine months ending 30 September 2011, the tyre manufacturing group saw "all economic indicators improved over the period," with revenues growing by 17.9 per cent to 4,265.8 million euros and profitability – understood as the ratio of the operating result to sales – by 10.6 per cent.

Analysts: Hankook share sale is Michelin “cashing in on failed partnership”

Following the announcement that Michelin is selling its 9.98 per cent share of Hankook, financial analysts have shared their view that the move amounts to “cashing in on a failed partnership.” Morgan Stanley's suggestion is that the Hankook shareholding ended up being a mere financial investment after attempts to cooperate more broadly “repeatedly failed.” Michelin built its stake in Hankook between 2003 and 2008 and reportedly tried to establish a partnership with Hankook to develop distribution, R&D and manufacturing together in Asia.

Starco announces senior OEM appointment

As of November 2011, former GKN Wheels Carpenedolo sales director Thomas Ruedl will take on the role of group sales director, OEM Key Accounts at Starco. In his new role, Ruedl will report to regional director Jef de Smedt and have overall responsibility for Starco’s existing and future OEM customers. First priority for Ruedl in his new position will be prioritising Starco’s agricultural, industrial and trailers/caravans markets; this will be followed by the horticultural and internal transport markets. The new OEM Key accounts group sales director will work in close liaison with local Starco sales entities, which will also continue their daily contact with global OEM customers as before.

PyroCouple sensor offers non-contact tyre manufacturing measurements

Infrared temperature sensors from the Calex PyroCouple Series are being used by a major tyre manufacturer. The equipment is being used to detect the presence of hot rubber tyre material as it passes a point on a conveyor. The tyre material is transported in two thin bands on a cooled aluminium conveyor. The temperature of the tyre material is normally 75°C and the cooled conveyor surface temperature is typically 20°C.

Onkar S Kanwar inducted into tyre hall of fame

Apollo Tyres Ltd chairman, Onkar S Kanwar, was inducted into the Tire Industry Association’s (TIA) Hall of Fame 2011 at a special ceremony held on 31 October in Las Vegas.

Every year the TIA honours the outstanding individuals who have created lasting value for the tyre, rubber and transportation industries. This year, along with Onkar Kanwar, three others have been honoured for their significant contribution to the American tyre industry. Kanwar, who is the only non-American to be inducted into this year’s Hall of Fame, unfortunately was not able to attend the ceremony in Las Vegas.
