Commander to retire as head of Lanxess’ Butyl Rubber business

Dr. Ron Commander, head of Lanxess’ Butyl Rubber business unit, will retire at the end of this year. Before this takes effect, the 62-year old will spend his final six months or so with the specialty chemicals company in a new, Canada-based role. Commander’s new position will take effect on 1 July, and on that date he will be succeeded as head of the Butyl Rubber business unit by Dr. Guenther Weymans, who is currently head of Lanxess’ Keltan Elastomers business unit.

Mini to be made in India

Following growing global demand for its Mini range, owners BMW have announced that the iconic marque will be produced outside Europe for the first time later this year to cater for growth markets in other continents. This is in line with BMW's "production follows the market" strategy.

Primewell Sport 910 – a flagship, affordable UHP tyre

The new Primewell Sport 910 has been hailed “a true ultra-high performance (UHP) flagship tyre for the quality sector” by Giti Tire’s country manager UK, Brian McDermott.

Speaking ahead of the product’s UK launch, he cited the main characteristics of the Sport 910, including the new asymmetric tread pattern design, exclusive compound and manufacturing advancements as being key to delivering excellent handling and ride comfort.

Superior Industries names site for new plant

As of 2015, Super Industries International will expand its portfolio of Chihuahua-made wheels. The North American aluminium wheel manufacturer announced on 16 April that its new manufacturing facility in Mexico will be erected in the city of Chihuahua. Superior Industries says it and the state of Chihuahua have “agreed in principle to a series of incentives that reflect a continued partnership between Superior and the state.” Superior already operates three manufacturing facilities in the city.

Yokohama to build second truck tyre plant in Thailand

Phase two work on Yokohama Rubber’s truck and bus tyre factory in Thailand is scheduled to begin in July. This second stage of the Yokohama Tire Manufacturing (Thailand) Co., Ltd. project involves the erection of a second plant on a 2.6 section of land adjacent to the existing truck and bus tyre factory in Rayong Province. Yokohama Rubber’s total investment in this second plant amounts to 8 billion yen (£53.6 million). The expansion will double the Thailand subsidiary’s truck and bus tyre capacity to 700,000 pieces per annum; the second plant is scheduled to enter production in April 2015 and full-fledged operation the following December.

Bridgestone’s Russia plant means more competition for Nokian and others

Bridgestone’s decision to open a tyre manufacturing plant in Russia is likely to result in more intense competition between the non-domestic tyremakers in general as well as Nokian in particular. The news also appeared to dash hopes that Bridgestone (Nokian’s biggest single shareholder) might buy it out at some point (see below).

Now that Bridgestone has shared details of its plan to build a passenger car tyre ready to produce tyres in 2016, the race is on to assess the impact of the move on the current market situations. Indigenous tyremakers such as Nizhnekamskshina aside, there are two reasons why this announcement means more intense competition than ever between the likes of Pirelli, Yokohama, Continental and especially Nokian (for which Russia is a key profit centre) and Bridgestone.

Yokohama HPT confirms ‘rotary forged’ wheels across brands

The UK distributor of TSW, Beyern and Mandrus replacement alloy wheels, Yokohama HPT has confirmed the addition of several new wheels to its UK line-up that use the “rotary forging” process to create strong, dynamic and lighter wheels. During manufacturing the outer rim is forged while the wheel centre and rim mould are spun at high speed. TSW’s Panorama and Tanaka, the Beyern Spartan, the Mandrus Rotec and the Victor Equipment Innsbruck are all products of this technique in the current Yokohama HPT range.

Scrub motorcycle rubber, urges TyreSafe

To coincide with the arrival of spring weather, TyreSafe is encouraging more ‘scrubbers’ to be active within the motorcycling community. This, we hasten to say, refers to the need to ‘scrub-in’ new tyres during their first 100 miles or thereabouts.

Starco to supply Terrion tractor range

Russia’s third-largest tractor manufacturer, the ZAO AgroTechMash (ATM) group, has selected Starco as original equipment supplier for its Terrion brand. This agreement is described by Starco as a further step in the company’s agricultural strategy and will be implemented by its Riga-based Eastern group; under the new agreement, Starco will supply the ATM group steel wheels from Titan, row crop wheels from Starco Schaad and tyres from BKT.

Bridgestone to build pcr plant in Russia

Japanese tyre manufacturer Bridgestone concluded an investment contract with Mitsubishi Corporation, the Ulyanovsk Oblast government and the Ulyanovsk Region Development Corporation on 12 April. Under the agreement, Bridgestone and Mitsubishi will respectively hold 90 and 10 per cent equity ownership in a new tyre manufacturing company, Bridgestone Tire Manufacturing C.I.S. LLC (BMCIS).

Titan appoints Fuglaar finance VP for North America

Titan International has hired Keith Fuglaar as its new vice-president of finance for North America. Fuglaar joins Titan from US-based heavy manufacturing firm The Egging Company, where he served as chief financial officer. Prior to his Egging commitment, Fuglaar was vice-president of finance for ARC Automotive, corporate controller at HNTB Corporation and director-FP&A with McLeodUSA. Fuglaar holds an MBA from the University of Tennessee and a BS from Louisiana Tech.

Apec adds 13 new brake pads

UK brake supplier Apec has expanded its product range with the addition of 13 new brake pads, continuing the expansion of what the company says is Europe's largest range of direct replacement braking items, which now stands at over 1,400 brake pads, and over 6,000 braking products.

Carbon One to introduce eco-friendly carbon wheels

British design firm Carbon One is poised to introduce a new range of wheels manufactured with carbon to achieve reduced weight targets. The firm estimates that using “next-generation lightweight materials, such as carbon fibre composites, could reduce passenger car weight by 50 per cent and improve fuel efficiency by about 35 per cent without compromising performance or safety” – and wheels are the latest component to which it is seeking to apply this thinking.

Analysts: UK to become e-commerce capital of the world

In the future 81 per cent of the UK population will be living in urban areas. There will be 200 million connected devices and one in four British citizens will be shopping online – the highest number in the world, per capita. The over 65s will represent a fifth of the population. The country’s South East region will grow to become the second largest region after London, accounting for 15.3 per cent of total GDP. That’s all if Frost & Sullivan’s 'New Mega Trends in the UK' analysis, which looks forward to 2025, turns out to be correct. However, even if there are only half right the flavor of what might take place in the next year if of interest to all sectors of the industry.

Aditya Birla Nuvo divests carbon black operation

Aditya Birla Nuvo, a company within India’s Aditya Birla Group, has divested its carbon black businesses to another group company, SKI Carbon Black (India) Pvt. Ltd. The company says the decision to divest was approved in a committee meeting held on 6 April, and the carbon black business will be divested at an enterprise value of Rs 14.51 billion (£173.2 million).
