SMMT figures show that 1,528,148 cars weremanufactured in the UK in 2014 – a 1.2 per cent increase on the previous year and the best year since 2007. In addition, the strongest December in a decade saw 108,721 cars produced; up 27.1 per cent on December 2013. This growth came despite challenges in some export markets.
The SMMT says that UK engine manufacturing output returned to growth in December, rising 6.7 per cent. However, output fell 6.2 per cent over the year, following retooling at a number of facilities, although the outlook is bright, thanks to major investments into UK engine manufacturing.
The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., announced on 25 December 2014 that Suzhou Yokohama Tire Co., Ltd. (the manufacturers Chinese tyre plant) held a ceremony and festival on 1 November marking the third phase of tree planting at the factory in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. Leading Italian brake brand, Brembo, has announced plans to invest 32 million euros in an aluminium brake caliper manufacturing facility in Escobedo, Nuevo Leon, just outside of Monterrey, Mexico. According to the company, the plant will include a new aluminium foundry and machining facility capable of producing two million calipers per year destined for the company’s customers in the NAFTA region. The foundry will have a melting capacity of 14,000 tons. The facility will cover 31,500 square metres and when fully operational is expected to generate an annual turnover of 100 million euros. The plant is expected to commence initial production in 2016 and be fully operational by the end of 2018.
Kiswire, Inc. is continuing the expansion of its South Carolina, USA tyre cored factory with the investment of $30 million, a figure which is to expected to create 45 new jobs. Vacu-Lug Traction Tyres has launched the first in its new flagship range of commercial vehicle drive axle tyres, inspired by the latest production techniques and technologies used in aircraft and high-performance tyres. According to the company, the Vacu-Lug Logistik range is designed to offer operators the “very, very lowest costs per kilometre”.
Grantham-based commercial tyre remoulding specialist Vacu-Lug has already launched its Logistik 295/80R22.5 drive tyre, in its new Logistik drive pattern. The 315/70R22.5 tyre is poised to launch early in the New Year.

Pirelli has been recognized in the “Climate Disclosure Leadership Index Italy 2014” (CDLI), which evaluates the completeness of a company’s strategy against climate change and the transparency of its communication to stakeholders. Pirelli scored 99/100.
The result was announced 5 November in Milan during the presentation of the CDP Italy 100 Climate Change Report 2014, prepared by SDA-Bocconi with the support of IMQ, and focused on the ways in which the 100 biggest listed Italian companies face and manage climate change.
Commercial production has started at Yokohama Rubber’s tyre plant in India’s Haryana state. The facility, Yokohama’s first in the country, was officially inaugurated in February 2014 and undertook trial production throughout the first half of the year. Plant capacity during this initial phase of commercial production is 2,000 tyres a day. Plant output will focus on the Earth-1 tyre range, which has been specifically designed for the Indian market.
