Official Opening Of Pirelli North American HQ And MIRS Plant

Pirelli’s new North American HQ and first US MIRS tyre factory were officially opened this weekend in Rome, Georgia. The ribbon was cut by Roy E. Barnes, Governor of Georgia and Pirelli North American President and CEO Gaetano Mannino. Various other local dignitaries attended the ceremony. The complex will employ 300 in three years time, 250 of which will be involved in production. Initially there will be three MIRS modules, but Pirelli says that this number “will substantially increase” by 2003. Pirelli also says that it expects to announce new OE contracts for MIRS tyres with more than one North American car manufacturer.

Turnover And Profits Up For Nokian

Nokian Tyres has released its figures for the second quarter. Looking at the figures for the first six months, both turnover and operating profit were up on 1H 2001. Turnover rose 12.6 per cent to 193.3 million Euros (1H 2001 171.6 m Euros) and operating profit was 8.7 m Euros (6.7 m). Net profit was 1 m Euros (-0.8 m Euros). The good figures were the result of price increases, improved product mix and lower material costs. Most product groups showed increased sales, with the exception of retreading materials, and the Vianor retail chain lost 2.5 m Euros.

Three Tyre Companies In Europe’s Top 500

The Wall Street Journal Europe has published a list of Europe’s top 500 companies, ranked on value of sales last year. Tyre manufacturing is represented by three companies. These are Michelin (number 118) with sales of 15.77 billion Euro, Continental (158 – sales 11.23 bn Euro) and Pirelli (217 – sales 7.50 bn Euro). To put this in perspective, the number one-ranked European company was BP, which had sales of 197.8 bn Euro.

Toyota seeks tyre manufacturing deal.

The Toyota Motor Corporation is negotiating with Yokohama Rubber Company Limited and Toyo Tire & Rubber Company Limited with the intention of producing tyres, using a new manufacturing process that the car maker has totally funded.

European Bank Takes Stake In Russian Tyre Venture

The European Bank For Reconstruction And Development will provide 20 million dollars in funds to Michelin Russian Tyre Manufacturing, giving it a 49 per cent shareholding in the plant at Davydovo. Production at the new facility is expected to reach 2.1 million units by 2005.

Dunlop Divests In South Africa

Dunlop Tyres International (formerly Dunlop Africa) has sold off its international products division to Specialised Belting. The price was not revealed. The international products division includes conveyor belt and hose manufacturing and the sale, according to Dunlop CEO Mike Hankinson, follows Dunlop’s decision to concentrate on the core business of tyre manufacturing

Record Shipments For Superior

Superior Industries International has reported that net income for the first quarter of 2002 has exceeded analyst expectations with revenue and shipments reaching record highs. For the first quarter 2002 net income increased by 7.6 per cent or 0.65 dollars per diluted share. Shipments of aluminium wheels increased by 16 per cent bringing revenue for the first quarter to 186,532,000 dollars, a record for the company and a 12.3 per cent increase on the same quarter for 2001. The results include the write off on non-recurring start up costs of 1.653 million dollars in respect of the launch of the new aluminium suspension parts operation. The joint venture wheel manufacturing operation in Hungary also posts profitable results.

Software Saves For Hayes Lemmerz

Software supplier MSC, working with Hayes Lemmerz, has reduced time and materials costs in automotive wheel manufacturing and design by using its MSC Acumen and MSC Fatigue software to perform durability analysis. Software simulation has allowed the design of lighter, longer lasting products which can save millions of dollars in manufacturing, maintenance and warranty costs. Khosrow Namdarian, senior structural analyst with Hayes-Lemmerz, stated “The advantage is that if you make 4 million of just one aluminium part per year and can save a quarter of a pound of aluminium per part, that adds up to one million pounds of aluminium saved in materials costs on just one part.”

Firestone Truck Tyres Found To Be Okay

NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) has closed an investigation into Firestone’s truck tyres STEELTEX, saying that there is no design- or manufacturing defect. Good news for a change for troubled Bridgestone/Firestone in the USA.

Cooper And Pirelli Restructure Alliance (Update)

Cooper Tire & Rubber and Pirelli have announced the restructuring of their three-year-old alliance in the US market. The object is to improve the competitive strength of both companies and both agree that, while the alliance had proved generally positive, a new approach would be beneficial in pursuing separate brand strategies. From July 1st, Pirelli will resume responsibility for sales and customer servicing of the Pirelli brand in the USA, while Cooper will continue to manufacture certain sizes of Pirelli tyres for sale in the US, as well as providing logistics support. The two companies will investigate the feasibility of Pirelli manufacturing selected UHP Cooper tyres in the future. It is intended that the transition regarding existing Pirelli dealers will be smooth, ensuring that customer service is not adversely affected. The changes in the alliance are mutually acceptable and both companies continue to regard themselves as partners in technical and other related matters. D. Richard Stephens, President of Cooper Tire, and Francesco Gori, General Manager, Pirelli Tyre Worldwide, issued a joint statement, as follows: “Our companies have learned to know and appreciate each other since the beginning and are looking forward to a new and different phase of our alliance which will benefit customers for both brands.” Under the terms of the original alliance, signed in February 1999, Cooper managed the sales and distribution of tyres in the replacement markets of the USA, Canada and Mexico. Pirelli developed products for the US market and strengthened brand awareness via participation in motorsports.

MRF was established in Chennai, India, in 1946 as a general rubber goods manufacturer and gradually progressed into tyre production in 1961.Today, the company enjoys the distinction of being the largest tyre company in the Indian subcontinent and the 13th largest in the world. Memorandum Of Association Signed For Kumho Purchase

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed this week regarding the purchase of 80 per cent of the tyre manufacturing business of Kumho. The buying consortium is headed by JP Morgan Chase and includes US equity fund Carlyle Group. At an estimated $1.5 billion, the sale – which still has to be finalised – would be South Korea’s largest-ever asset sale to foreign interests.

Philippines Plant Closure For Goodyear

Goodyear has announced the closure of its factory at Marikina in the Philippines on February 1st. Overcapacity and weakening demand were cited as the reasons. The plant employed 175 people and produced 1,200 tyres a day. Goodyear Asia Region tyre manufacturing director Harold Smith said that the Philippines tyre market was highly competitive “with a flood of low-cost imports from China and South East Asia.” The company has another factory in the Philippines, at Las Pinas, and some associates from Marikina may transfer there.

Losses At Tenneco Automotive

Tenneco Automotive has reported an 8 million dollar loss in the fourth quarter of 2001, this completes a 130 million dollar loss for the year, compared to a 40 million dollar loss for the previous year. The company is to close eight facilities worldwide, with the loss of 900 jobs. This will form part of a global lean manufacturing and distribution initiative.
