First Stop Dealers Treated to VIP Tour

Staff from three First Stop dealerships have been treated to a VIP tour of one of Bridgestone’s major tyre manufacturing plants in France as part of a campaign to further increase knowledge within the network.

Representatives from Airway Tyres in Colchester, and the Lodge Tyres depots in both Walsall and Talke, near Stoke, were given a guided tour of the factory in Béthune, northern France. They received an in-depth insight into the whole tyre manufacturing process, from the combination of natural and synthetic rubber all the way through to the detailed and thorough quality control of the final product.

Yokohama to Manufacture Radial Truck and Bus Tyres in China

The Yokohama Rubber Co, Ltd, has announced that it established Suzhou Yokohama Tire Co., Ltd. earlier this month in Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province, China. Beginning October 2007, the new company will manufacture and sell steel radial truck and bus (TB) tyres. The company invested US$81 million in the facility and expects to produces 350,000 tyres. Up till now Yokohama has exported Japanese produced replacement tyres into the Chinese market.

Dunlop India to Make Industrial Rubber Products at Ambattur

Dunlop India is planning to set up an industrial rubber products plant at its existing truck and bus tyre manufacturing facility at Ambattur in Chennai. The company currently has an industrial products division at Sahagunj facility in West Bengal, the Indian Hindu Business Line Newspaper has reported.

Bandag Introduces New Equipment

(Australian Tyre Dealer) Bandag has just completed a 12 month testing program with new buffer and extruder machines that is reported to have led to improvements in processing, tyre preparation and tread adhesion, together with a reduction in manufacturing costs. Designed and built by Bandag Inc. in the United States, the key feature of the 8400 Buffer is that every tyre is buffed perfectly every time. Bandag National Marketing and Sales Manager, Greg Nielsen, said this was achieved by initially programming the exact buffing specifications into the 8400 for every tyre that is produced.

Hayes Lemmerz Initiates Major Restructuring Programme

Hayes Lemmerz International, Inc is implementing tough restructuring measures that it says are designed to “strengthen its competitive position, improve profitability and increase long-term value for its shareholders.” The steps include revised wage and benefit plans; the strategic realignment of its business (more than 15 per cent of the company’s US staff have already lost their jobs); and the rationalisation of Hayes Lemmerz’ wheel capacity, namely closing its Huntingdon Indiana Wheel plant.

Curtis Clawson, president, chief executive officer and chairman of the board said: “The last several years have seen profound changes in the competitive landscape of the automotive industry. We are aligning our organization to recognize the realities in the US and to assure continued success in the global automotive marketplace.”

The Wheel Business is a Network…

The huge Republic of China is an automotive growth market par excellence. And that applies to the automobile manufacturers as well as their suppliers. The country is not only at the centre of low-price manufacturing for “the rest of the world,” but has also become an enormous sales market in its own right. The cluster of cities in the east of the country is home to millions upon millions of inhabitants and the streetscape is shaped by the sight of premium segment cars and their upper middle class owners. These cities also have well-developed road systems. Rush-hour traffic jams are another familiar sight for anyone used to driving in western metropolises – and that’s despite the numerous additional lanes alongside just as numerous skyscrapers.

G. Craig Sullivan Elected to Goodyear Board

G Craig Sullivan, former chairman and chief executive officer of The Clorox Company, has been elected to the Board of Directors of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.

“Craig Sullivan is a top-rate business leader with extensive experience in building strong consumer brands,” said Goodyear chairman and chief executive officer Robert J. Keegan. “His experience and knowledge will be of significant value to our board of directors.”

New Honda Logistics Centre Opens

On 7th April Honda Logistics Centre (UK) Ltd opened a new £24 million logistics operation in Swindon, Wiltshire to supply parts to Honda’s UK car, motorcycle and power equipment networks. Employing 106 people, this state-of-the-art centre is adjacent to Honda’s UK and European car manufacturing facility where Honda employs 4,000 Associates manufacturing Civic and CR-V models. Further to its commitment to car manufacturing in the UK this new, fully-owned purpose built warehouse confirms Honda’s future Logistics and Procurement functions in Swindon.

90 Years of Shock Absorber Manufacturing

Tenneco Inc., manufacturer of Monroe® shock absorbers, is celebrating the 90th anniversary of the start of its shock absorber manufacturing activity with a number of initiatives that support its new brand promise “Monroe is More®”. The company, which was one of the first to invent shock absorber technology in the early 1900s, today supplies more than 200 vehicle platforms worldwide with its original equipment ride and emission control products. Renewable Energy First for Michelin Plant

Michelin is to become the first major manufacturer in Scotland to commit to using renewable energy, with the construction of two wind turbines at its Dundee plant, says an article in The Scotsman. In a battle against being hurt further by rising energy costs, the turbines – which are expected to be operational by July – will provide up to 4MW of power on a windy day, meeting the entire Dundee factory’s needs. Over the course of the year it is forecast to provide about a third of the energy needs, cutting electricity bills by about 8 per cent, once running costs are accounted for.

Stamford Earns Certifications

(Akron/Tire Review) Stamford Tires & Wheels Inc. wheel manufacturing plant in Thailand earned TÜV CERT for process quality, and accreditation from the Vehicle Inspection Association (VIA) Japan for its in-house laboratory.

Wheel and Parts Plant for Bulgaria

In Sofia, Bulgaria’s Economy and Energy Minister Rumen Ovcharov and the Vice President of French company Montupet, Didier Crozet, are expected to sign the contract for the construction of an aluminium car parts manufacturing plant in the Industrial Park of Russe. The total investment will be 70 million Bulgarian Leva (35 million Euros) and 500 new jobs will be created in a three-year period.

Natural Rubber Price Continues to Rise

The price of natural rubber is reaching a new high of US$2.16/kg; a rise of 22 per cent since January 1st and up 87 per cent since January 2005. As an example of the potential effect on tyre manufacturing, a 60kg truck tyre will contain around 24kg of natural rubber. Already this year, many tyre manufacturers have announced two lots of price increases and industry pundits expect further price rises if natural rubber prices stay at the current level.

Continental Opens Brazilian Factory

Continental AG has just opened its new tyre plant in Brazil and said that it should be operating at full capacity within the next 18 months. “The new low-cost production capacities play a key role in our concept for the future passenger tyre business in the loss-making NAFTA region. At the same time, the capacities allow for profitable growth,” CEO Manfred Wennemer said in a statement released in Germany.
