Cheng Shin launching 40 million tyre capacity expansion in China

Luo Yongli, deputy general manager of the company, recently told a briefing that he is optimistic about the operation of Cheng Shin in 2023. In the past, Cheng Shin has reportedly significantly reduced capital expenditures to combat adversity in the operating environment. But with the overall situation expected to improve, the tyre maker will start expanding production capacity, including launching a 40 million tyre capacity expansion plan at factories in mainland China.

Sailun Dongying factory finds Covid-19, but deemed low risk

In order to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus, China has divided the entire country into two areas: high-risk areas and low-risk areas. When the Covid-19 infection is found in a particular place, the government labels it as a “high risk” area and implements stricter epidemic prevention policies. On 4 December 2022, the Sailun Dongying factory was listed as a high-risk area. A day later, on 5 December the local authority adjusted the tyre factory to a low-risk area.

China encourages foreign investment in the tyre industry

Recently, the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Commerce released the “Catalogue of Industries for Encouraging Foreign Investment (2020 Version)”. The Chinese government hopes that foreign businessmen will invest in the industries listed in the document. The trade encouragement catalogue currently in use in China was released in 2020, and the 2022 version will come into force on 1 January 2023.

Shandong tyre companies implement closed-loop management

Shandong Province, one of the leading tyre production areas in China, is once again affected by the Covid-19 epidemic. On December 1, there were 41 new confirmed cases and 623 asymptomatic infections in this area. Nokian Tyres: “substantial uncertainties” relating to timing of Tatneft deal closure

At the end of June, Nokian Tyres announced that it was executing a “controlled exit” from Russia. By August Russian news sources were reporting that Nokian was accepting “binding offers” for its Russian tyre plant up until the end of September. At the end of October, Nokian confirmed that it had agreed terms with Tatneft to sell its Russian tyre operations for roughly 400 million euros. More than a month later, Nokian Tyres spokespeople are speaking of “substantial uncertainties” relating to the Tatneft deal.

Borbet’s Solingen wheel factory to close

Borbet

The Borbet wheel factory in Solingen, Germany will close on 31 December 2022. The wheel manufacturer told its workforce on Monday 28 November at a works meeting. Around 600 employees are affected. All previous attempts to find an economically viable future for the location had failed. A transfer company will be set up.

Shandong Province promotes tyre industry upgrading

On November 11, Shandong Province announced the ‘Action Plan for a Powerful Province of Advanced Manufacturing (2022-2025)’. The Shandong authority specifically emphasised in this guidance document the necessity to promote increased quality in the development of high energy consuming industries, including the tyre industry. In addition, the concepts of “intelligent upgrade”, “green transformation”, “service extension”, and “ecological agglomeration” mentioned in the Action Plan also set out a rough outline for the upgrade and development of tyre companies in Shandong Province in the next few years.

Bridgestone to invest $250m in Costa Rica over 5 years, increasing production

Bridgestone Americas will invest an additional $190 million to renovate and expand its Costa Rican tyre manufacturing operations. The newly announced funds extend the existing plan to invest $60 million in Belén de Heredia by 2026. Bridgestone will increase its production capacity by 36 per cent, adding more than 160 new permanent jobs.

Cheng Shin Rubber increased capital in Indonesia factory

On 10 November, Cheng Shin Rubber Ind., Co., Ltd. announced that it is preparing to increase the capital of PT. Maxxis International Indonesia by US$30 million (about £25.53 million pounds; 29.01 million euros). Cheng Shin Rubber said that the capital increase meets the operation’s needs.

China’s moves to relax zero Covid policies good news for the tyre industry

On 11 November 2022, Chinese authorities issued a notice on how to proceed with the next phase of COVID-19 prevention and management. The statement’s content shows that the Chinese government is still adhering to the policy of “dynamic clearing”, but it has relaxed controls to a certain extent. And that’s good news for the tyre industry as one practitioner told us: “The fight against COVID-19 may not end in a short period in China. However, if the anti-epidemic policies in the next stage can reduce the negative impact on the economy, it will undoubtedly benefit China’s tyre industry.”
