Rhodia offers rolling resistance lowering solutions

As well as manufacturers of electric vehicles and related equipment, suppliers of the kind of raw materials and chemical components that make low rolling resistance tyres possible were also in attendance at last month’s Challenge Bibendum. The most prominent suppliers in this category were Rhodia and Lanxess. But with many premium tyres and a growing number of lower cost products already utilising silica-based technology for example, how low can tyres continue to go in terms of rolling resistance?

Bond International joins ITMA to “stay on top” of EU import regulations

UK importer and wholesaler Bond International has joined the Imported Tyre Manufacturers’ Association (ITMA). As the exclusive UK distributor for several brands, the company says it will benefit from ITMA’s expertise and access to the latest EU legislation and regulations, in ensuring that its imported tyres remain fully compliant for sale in the EU. “The number of laws and technical requirements for importers and manufacturers looking to sell tyres within the EU can be quite daunting and overwhelming,” explains Steve Tidmarsh, financial director, Bond International.

2 millionth ContiSeal tyre produced in Portugal

The 2 millionth ContiSeal tyre produced at the firm’s manufacturing plant in Lousado, Portugal rolled off the production this month. The 235/45 ZR 17 dimension tyre will be mounted on a Volkswagen Passat as original equipment, according to the company. Continental has been manufacturing car tyres with ContiSeal technology since 2008.

Corghi looking to expand into Brazil and China

In pursuit of the Italian garage equipment brand’s international intentions, Corghi has released details of the development strategy the firm is pursuing. According to Corghi representatives, the plan centres on so-called BRIC markets (Brazil, Russia, India and China) as the main guideline for growth. And for this reason the company reports it is making “significant investment in both the manufacturing and commercial side” of the business, investments that are said to be “already starting to bear fruit.”

Lanxess to build Singapore Nd-PBR plant

Following a feasibility study evaluating potential locations throughout Asia, Lanxess has announced plans to erect a second synthetic rubber facility on Singapore’s Juron Island. A memorandum of understanding on the new plant is scheduled to be signed by the German company’s CEO Axel C. Heitmann and Singapore Economic Development Board chairman Leo Yip on June 2; the signing ceremony has been scheduled to coincide with German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s first-ever visit to Singapore.

Michelin continues to invest in UK manufacturing operations

Speaking during Challenge Bibendum last week, managing general partner, Michel Rollier confirmed that Michelin continues to invest in its Dundee and Ballymena plants in the UK, where the firm is said to have made “tremendous efforts” to improve the efficiency and productivity of its plants.

Jochen Etzel appointed Conti Tire Americas CEO

The top job at Continental Tire the Americas, vacant since Matthias Schönberg’s July 1 transfer to the company’s ContiTech division was confirmed, has been filled by Jochen Etzel. In a statement, Etzel declared his appointment as CEO of Continental Tire the Americas “an excellent opportunity,” and added: “I am excited to take this next step with the CTA team. Matthias Schoenberg guided CTA to a strong and successful business model in manufacturing, product and sales. I look forward to the challenge of continuing to lead CTA to further volume growth, as well as significant new product launches."

Michelin India to supply own market needs by 2015

By 2015, Michelin aims to supply 100 per cent of its truck and bus tyre market in India from its plant currently under construction near Chennai. The facility, being built on a 300-acre site in Thervoy Kandigai, is scheduled to enter production next year with an initial annual capacity of 300,000 truck and bus tyres.

Hankook breaks ground on 3rd Chinese plant

Last November, Hankook Tire signed a US$954 million investment agreement to build an 11.5 million tyre per annum factory in Liang Jiang Xin Qu, Southwest China. The plant is scheduled to start operation in August 2012 and build up to an output of 4,500 truck and bus radials and 30,000 passenger car radials per day by the end of 2015; on May 18, 2011, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for this third Hankook Tire factory in China. Senior company management including vice-chairman and CEO Seung Hwa Suh, CMO Hyun Shick Cho and Hankook Tire China COO Ki Yeul Huh joined some 180 government officials from Chongqing region for the ceremony at the factory site.

DuPont acquisition of Danisco finalised

DuPont’s acquisition of Danisco has been finalised. On May 16 the chemical company reported that its wholly-owned subsidiary DuPont Denmark Holding ApS had taken on 92.2 per cent of Danisco’s outstanding shares, having paid 700 krone (£82) per share. Following the acquisition’s finalisation DuPont CEO and chair Ellen Kullman said “we are delighted that the tender has been successful and we can move on to the process of integrating Danisco into DuPont.” Danisco chairman Jorgen Tandrup added the Danish company is “very pleased that a vast majority of Danisco shareholders have accepted DuPont's offer” and commented on the two companies’ shared outlook on science and research capabilities.

Hefei plant inaugurated – Conti underway in Chinese tyre market

A ceremony marking the official opening of Continental’s first tyre factory in China was held on May 18. Shipments from the passenger car tyre plant in Hefei, Anhui province are expected to become available in the Chinese market within the next few weeks, with versions of the ContiPremiumContact 2 and ContiComfortContact 5 tailored for the Chinese market amongst the first volume products to be manufactured in Hefei. The new plant was officially opened today by CEO Dr. Elmar Degenhart, Nikolai Setzer, Executive Board member responsible for the Passenger Car and Light Truck Tires division, plant manager Tobias Kerle and representatives of local authorities.

Small fire at Cooper Avon, Melksham – “no loss of production”

Wiltshire news sources have reported a fire at Cooper Avon’s Melksham facility over the weekend; while crews worked in “difficult conditions” to put the fire out according to the Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service, Cooper Avon stated that the “damage was minimal and because there are no weekend shifts at present, there were no injuries to staff.” Operations at the plant were not affected, according to the company.

Conti to commence Russian PCR manufacture in Q4 2013

Continental has confirmed news first reported last year on its intention to erect a new factory in Russia. Alexander Lührs, head of media and press relations for the German manufacturer’s Passenger & Light Truck Tires division, told Tyres & Accessories that approximately 200 million euros will be invested in a greenfield plant initially capable of producing four million passenger car tyres a year. Production is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2013, Lührs added.

YHI – Now is the ‘right time’ for greater OEM sector involvement

The newly-released annual report from YHI International states the Singapore-based wheel manufacturer and automotive components distributor is embarking on a “new exciting era.” Specifically, the company has begun a five-year expansion plan to grow its manufacturing and distribution segments and achieve sales of S$1 billion (£494 million) by the 2015 financial year.

Sumitomo to manufacture in Brazil through 100% owned subsidiary

Official confirmation has been given of Sumitomo Rubber’s plans for Brazil; in July the Japanese firm will establish Sumitomo Rubber do Brasil Ltda, a Panara state-based subsidiary responsible for manufacturing and selling tyres in Brazil. With an investment of some 560 million real (£211 million), Sumitomo Rubber do Brasil will erect a factory to produce passenger car radials. The 500,000 square metre plant is scheduled to start production in October 2013 and have a 15,000 tyre per day capacity. Sumitomo Rubber will be sole shareholder in the new subsidiary.
