BSA still expanding

Malaysian entrepreneur and BSA International Bhd group Executive Chairman Datuk Dr Cam Soh Thiam Hong, says the world is one huge market that is too lucrative to ignore. Soh Thiam Hong, who was the largest importer of alloy rims into Malaysia in the 1990s, turned the tables around and is now Malaysia’s largest exporter of alloy rims under his own BSA brand. For the year ended Dec 31, 2002, it posted revenue of RM113.7mil, of which 85% came from overseas sales. For the six months ended June 30, BSA posted a pre-tax profit of RM9.2mil on revenue of RM75.7mil. BSA is considering setting up two new factories – one each in Malaysia and China – which could produce an additional two million rims a year, for a total three million rims, over the next few years.

Continental To Acquire Stake In Sime Darby

German tyre giant Continental has signed a joint venture with Malaysian industrial conglomerate Sime Darby Bhd and is taking a 30 per cent stake in Sime Darby’s tyre operations – DMIB Bhd and Sime Tyre International Malaysia Sdn Bhd (STI). Continental’s equity stake will be in a new company – SDC Tyre Sdn Bhd – that will become the holding company of both DMIB and STI. The agreement also provides the option for Continental to obtain a further 21 per cent (controlling) share in the new company in two years time. The JV is aimed at better equipping the companies to capitalise on opportunities in the Asian Free Trade Area (AFTA).

Rubber Triumvirate Creaking

Speaking in Malaysia, on recent news that Thailand may not cut rubber supply by four per cent as previously agreed by the three key producers, Primary Industries Minister Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik said “I hope that is a misquote. However, should it be true, there was an urgency to have a discussion with Indonesia and Thailand. After all, being the biggest producer, Thailand is benefiting more with the present high level of prices.” The three countries, which account for about 60% of world rubber production, agreed in Bali in 2001 to cut exports and output by 10% and 4%, respectively, aiming to support rubber prices.

Malaysian Tyres Now Accepted World-wide

The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers – Malaysian Tyre Manufacturers Industry Group claims that Malaysian manufactured tyres now conform to the highest international standards. Products have now been accepted in over 40 countries, including markets with strict regulations such as in Europe, Australia, US and Japan. Malaya’s four major manufacturers, DMIB Bhd, Goodyear Malaysia Bhd, Silverstone Bhd and Sime Tyres International Sdn exported over 2 million tyres in 2000.

New Face At Simex Europe

Raof Daud, Managing Director of Simex Europe, is leaving the company after almost nine years in the post. He is going to Lec Refrigeration (like Simex, a member of the Sime Darby group) in a senior sales capacity. Taking over at Simex Europe as General Manager is A. K. Lee, who was previously Export Manager, based in Malaysia.

Rubber Producers Plan To Cut Output

Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia – the world’s three biggest rubber producers – have agreed to cut natural rubber production by 4 per cent next year in an attempt to increase prices. However, traders are sceptical of the chances of success, saying that many rubber producers are small, private businesses which would be difficult to control.

Vredestein To Produce Bicycle Tyres In Malaysia

Vredestein BV has announced an imminent joint venture with Fung Keong Rubber Manufactory in Malaysia, for the production of bicycle tyres. Production will take place at a new local site. Ian Wilson, Managing Director, Vredestein UK informed TYRES & ACCESSORIES “The new venture with Fung Keong represents a step forward in the right direction and highlights our policy of continually exploiting lucrative market opportunities.”

No Fixed Price For Rubber

The top three natural rubber producers, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, want to set a minimum price for rubber on the world market and to limit supply. However, despite meeting twice in the past month, the three countries are unable to agree how these objectives might be achieved.
