Gibara Claims Pirelli Comment “Misrepresented”

In an interview with the German magazine Wirtschafts-Woche, Goodyear CEO Sam Gibara is reported as saying that Pirelli “would make a good fit” for Goodyear, if the Italian company was planning to sell all its tyre interests, rather than merely its truck tyre business. A subsequent statement from Goodyear says that Gibara’s comments were “misrepresented” and that he did not say that Goodyear was interested in acquiring any of the Italian manufacturer’s business.

Consumers Association Condemns Fast Fits

A report in the magazine Which? – published by the UK Consumers Association (CA) – has accused fast-fits of recommending unnecessary work in almost a quarter of cases. The CA took a test car to 93 depots, belonging to seven of the UK’s largest fast-fit chains, and says that 23, split across all seven chains, recommended unnecessary work. In response, one of the companies involved – Kwik-Fit – says that it has not been given detailed information by the CA but, on behalf of all the companies involved, it takes exception to the implication that so many in the trade would intentionally mislead the customer.

Which? Report On Fast-Fits – What Do You Think?

100,000 Tyre Inflation Brochures In The USA

Bridgestone/Firestone and the Tire Retread Information Bureau (TRIB) are co-sponsoring the distribution of over 100,000 tire inflation brochures at the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) “Roadcheck 2001” program to be held throughout north America June 5-7, 2001. The four page brochure titled “What are the high costs of low air pressure” is entirely non-commercial and originally appeared in Bridgestone’s tire topic magazine, Real Answers. The brochures will be distributed by highway patrol officers at weight stations in all fifty states and U.S. territories, and all Canadian provinces and territories, as part of CVSA’s program to heighten truckers’ awareness of the importance of maintaining proper air pressure.

SUVs Come Under Fire In The USA

It is not only the Ford Explorer that might show a tendency to rollover in critical situations; the US Consumer Report has revealed through its own tests that the Mitsubishi Mondero (known in Europe as the Pajero) shows a tendency to lift two wheels in critical situations. That, according to the magazine, is not acceptable and is a safety problem. Mitsubishi denies that there is any safety problem at all.

AutoExpress Award For Conti Tyre

The ContiPremiumContact has been named as best tyre in the Product Honours Awards from UK motoring magazine AutoExpress. Judging criteria included wet and dry handling, aquaplaning, braking and fuel economy.

Tyrexpo Asia 2001

Tyrexpo Asia 2001, to be held at the Singapore Expo Centre from 11 – 13 September, is the third Tyrexpo Asia to be held in Singapore. Although the name is the same, the exhibition has changed hands since the last show in 1998, but there is still a measure of continuity as the MD of the new organisers, ECI Ltd, is Paul Farrant, who was a director of previous organisers Labelex Exhibitions. And of course this show, like the first two, is being sponsored by TYRES & ACCESSORIES and German sister magazine NEUE REIFENZEITUNG. In reality, “the Asian market” is a collection of individual markets, each with varying degrees of potential. This has been recognised by others, and we have seen a number of exhibitions, loosely connected with the tyre industry in specific markets over previous years. In many cases, tyres and related equipment and services have been added on as something of an afterthought. Not so Tyrexpo Asia, which Paul Farrant describes as “the only show in the area dedicated to the tyre industry, and the one which is the best-established and which has built up a solid reputation.” The first show was held at a time of great optimism, with the phrase “Asian tiger economies” on everybody’s lips. What a difference there was two years later, with the words “Asian tigers” being replaced by “Asian crises”. But Asia is fighting back – car sales are increasing steadily, and cars mean tyres. The influence of south east Asia in the world’s tyre industry should not be under-estimated, neither should it be forgotten that four of the world’s ten largest tyre manufacturers are based in Asia and no fewer than fourteen of the world’s top twenty hail from Asia or the Indian sub-continent.

EUROC for the Chop?

After the STW race series, the new European Roadster Challenge (EUROC) is also under threat. As it seems that the German Touring Car Championship (Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft) will be successfully revived this year, well-known drivers anticipated to take part in EUROC have begun to look elsewhere at the last minute. Who will be equipping the Touring Car Championship teams with tyres is also not yet clear, although an exclusive contract is talked of, with auto motor und sport magazine already naming Dunlop. On the other hand the involvement of the Michelin subsidiary BFGoodrich in the EUROC series seems to have come to nothing even before the first race, unless Bernie Ecclestone can be persuaded to allow these cars, in which immense sums have already been invested, to take part in the Formula One circus.

Deceit at BRW?

The current total of 153 employees of retreader Berliner Reifenwerke (BRW) have been waiting for their salaries since March. However, they are now hoping that after a proposal of insolvency, one of the three potential investors with whom the Berlin economic authorities are negotiating, will take over the plant this month and continue production. The two BRW owners Cohnen and Krüßmann are suspected of misappropriating 46.1 million German marks which were given for investments. Meanwhile a German magazine reports a Credit Suisse (Frankfurt) account of approximately 32 million German marks. Account-holder is a Tahiti-registered company belonging to Horst Krüßmann, former Managing Director of Berliner Reifenwerke. Berlin Public Prosecutors are conducting judicial inquiries.

Top Tyre In Test: ContiPremiumContact

The UK consumer motoring magazine Auto Express recently put ten tyre brands through a series of wet and dry braking and handling tests. Continental’s PremiumContact came out on top, followed by the Vredestein Sportrac and Goodyear’s Eagle Ventura.

Opinion Poll: Continental After Bosch And Siemens

In a recent opinion poll, by the magazine Automotive Engineering Partners, 200 car producers and supplier experts regarded Bosch, DaimlerChrysler and the “FEV-Motorentechnik” as the most innovative companies in the automotive industry. Continental was third, behind Siemens, in the supplier section.

Honour For Goodyear

For the third time in a row, Goodyear has earned top honours in Fortune magazine’s Rubber and Plastics Product category of “America’s Most Admired Companies”. Among things measured were reputation, product quality, innovation, social responsibility and financial soundness.

M-Class Is Safe

At the beginning of August, an article in the German automotive magazine Auto Bild said that the M-Class Off-Roaders could be in danger of overturning. The company reacted immediately and carried out a second test together with the magazine, in which the safety of the M-Class was vindicated. The cause of the wrong first interpretation is that instructions for the special test were not followed accurately by the magazine.
