Michelin Men Take Part in MPG Marathon

This year’s MPG Marathon took place on Wednesday September 30 and Thursday October 1, and Michelin’s Stoke-on-Trent headquarters fielded two teams in the event. Factory manager Peter Marsh and environmental manager Ian Cowie and Michelin Purchasing staff Charlie Watts and Mick Underhill took part in the 360 mile marathon, driving Peugeot 308 HDi cars – the vehicle used to set a world record of 126 miles per gallon in the UK – and fitted with Michelin Energy Saver tyres. The two teams finished in 9th and 11th place in the overall standings.

Michelin Fairs Well in Consumer Reports Tests

US based publication Consumer Reports has rated four Michelin tyres the top spots in North American market all-season (S and T speed ratings) and performance all-season tyres (H and V speed ratings), and winter categories in the magazine's November issue. Each of the four Michelin models received an "Excellent" rating. The Michelin tyres bested tests of 69 models – the largest group ever tested by Consumer Reports. That includes all-season and winter passenger car and SUV tyres.

Newsweek: Goodyear Among "Greenest Big Companies in America"

Newsweek Magazine has recognised Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company as one of “The Greenest Big Companies in America.” Companies were scored on factors that included environmental impact, green policies, and overall reputation as an environmentally conscientious company. The rankings were determined by Newsweek in conjunction with KLD Research & Analytics, Trucost and CorporateRegister.com. The rankings were published in the September 28 edition of the magazine.

“The evaluation was based on specific criteria such as greenhouse gas emissions, water usage and ‘green’ programs,” stated Don Stanley, Goodyear’s vice president of product quality and plant technology. “We pride ourselves on the progress we’ve made over the years on these and other fronts. However, we also recognize the fact that environmental stewardship requires continuous improvement across a broad spectrum of opportunities, and at Goodyear we are committed to getting better each and every day.”

Blackcircles.com to Launch New Service This Month

Online tyre retailer Blackcircles is set to launch a new service that will see the company foray deeper into the aftermarket. (For full report see November’s Tyres & Accessories magazine) Earlier this summer the company announced that it would expand its network of independent garages by 30 per cent by the end of the year in preparation for the move. Blackcircles currently counts 1,200 independent garages in its network. The South East and North West are said to be prime regions for new garages to meet demand.

In recent years Blackcircles.com has grown to a turnover of in excess of £10, after having only launched in 2001. In an earlier report, the Financial Times quoted Welch as saying sales were as much as 80 per cent up year-on-year. While year-on-year sales growth is currently quoted at 60 per cent it remains nonetheless impressive. 2008 turnover was £11 million, but in 2009, it is predicted to be £15 million.

Heidfeld Argues for More Than One F1 Tyre Supplier

BMW may be on their way out of Formula One – or maybe not, in view of the latest statements from the FIA (see Related News below) – but driver Nick Heidfeld is still arguing for possible improvements to the sport. As he sees it, in an interview with Autosport magazine, Heidfeld believes that more than one tyre supplier could make our favourite black circles “ten times better”. While there have been no major issues with the Bridgestone-supplied rubber this year, Heidfeld says that the solitary tyre supplier regulation leads to “artificial” racing.

Conti Basks in Auto Express Test Win

Continental is rather pleased to have Auto Express magazine declare its ContiPremiumContact 2 the winner in this year's summer tyre comparative test. In their summary, the Auto Express tyre testers stated "The Continental is the best all-round summer tyre you can buy." Twelve tyres in the popular 205/55 R 16 size, all fitted to an Audi A3, featured in the test.

Two Michelin Tyres in RiDER Power top 10

Readers of RiDE Magazine voted the Michelin Pilot Road 2 as their number one tyre in the magazine’s 2009 RiDER Power survey. The Michelin Pilot Power 2CT was the highest-rated sports tyre, coming in at number four in the top ten. Each year, thousands of readers vote for their favourite bikes and products and this year’s results were published in the November 2009 issue of the magazine, which is renown for its stringent product tests.

The Michelin Pilot Road 2 dual compound sports touring tyre is designed for high mileage combined and performance in wet grip. Also benefiting from the same 2CT (2 Compound-Technology) the Michelin Pilot Power 2CT is a high-performance sports tyre designed for fast road riding and occasional track-day use.

Commenting on the results, Olivier Gros, Michelin’s UK Director of Motorcycle Tyres said: “This is a great result for Michelin as it recognises the amount of work that goes into making our tyres such good all-round performers. What makes it really special is that this recognition comes directly from our customers who are actually using our tyres in the real world, out on the UK’s roads.”

Marangoni Targets TV to Showcase Brand

Marangoni has teamed up with premier drag venue Santa Pod Raceway and experienced TV production house Pulse 8 Media to create two unique ‘magazine’ style car shows that will be airing throughout the latter half of the year on both Eurosport and Motors TV channels on the digital platform.

Investing significantly in the move, Marangoni and Santa Pod Raceway acquired no less 36 hours of broadcast time for two shows that showcased their ‘Marangoni Fast Show’ and ‘Marangoni Ultimate Street Car’ sponsored events. The programmes show every aspect of the events from the ubiquitous racing, to the nightlife and lifestyle elements that proved so popular with the capacity crowds. Naturally, Marangoni branding, demo cars and products are liberally sprinkled throughout.

Maxxis Kicks Off New Football Sponsorship

Firestone Tyre Takes Top Honours in Emergency Services Test

Emergency, rescue and police vehicles often participate in jobs where lives are at stake. Therefore they require a tyre that delivers top performance while offering durability and dependability. In the US, specialist magazine Police Fleet Manager rated a number of tyres for their suitability, and Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations (BATO) reports that its Firestone Firehawk GT Pursuit was shown to be "the best tyre for this demanding job." The Firehawk GT Pursuit was rated top overall tyre and secured top position in wet-oriented performance.

A New Beginning

On 15 May 2009 Apollo Tyre’s purchase of Vredestein Banden was completed with the signing of contracts ratifying a deal estimated to be worth between 175 million and 220 million euros. The new combined company, Apollo Vredestein BV, will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Indian tyre giant Apollo, with full responsibility for selling all of both company’s tyre brands (Vredestein, Maloya and Apollo) in Europe. Having witnessed Amtel-Vredestein go to the wall earlier this year, observers agree that the company's previous alliance with the now defunct Russian tyre maker turned out – with the benefit of hindsight – to have been a mistake.

Nevertheless Vredestein's re-marriage to an ambitious manufacturer with its own designs on European market access puts the new combined company just outside the top 10 global tyre manufacturers, somewhere around 12 or 13; fulfils Vredestein’s desire to find emerging market production capacity and a route into the related sales markets; and is being hailed as a new beginning for Dutch tyre maker. Tyres & Accessories recently travelled to Apollo Vredestein BV's Enschede headquarters and asked the newly merged company's CEO, Rob Oudshoorn, why it will be second time lucky for the tyre manufacturer.

Schaeffler Seeks Chinese Investors

Chinese state and private firms may take on a partial shareholding in debt laden Schaeffler AG. According to an article printed by German business magazine WirtschaftsWoche on June 27, the company has engaged in talks with several parties, including the Beijing city administration, regarding a share sale in order to bolster its short-term finances. Such a deal would give the Chinese access to the company’s know-how, technology and distribution channels, the magazine reported.

“We have always said that we would speak to potential investors,” a Schaeffler spokesman was quoted as saying.
