Fast Ford Uses Maxxis in Tyre Pressure, Alloy Wheel Tests

September’s issue of Fast Ford magazine carries reports on two performance tests – how different tyre pressure settings affect a car’s handling characteristics and the performance benefits that can be gained from fitting lightweight alloy wheels – both of which were conducted using the Maxxis MA-Z1 tyre. “Fast Ford is the UK’s top Ford tuning magazine and is highly influential in reaching an important performance enthusiast audience, so we are delighted with the magazine’s very positive feedback on the MA-Z1 from these two important tests,” says Maxxis International UK’s managing director Derek McMartin.

Which? Presents Continental with Best Tyre Brand Accolade

Outstanding results in Which? magazine’s tyre tests have given Continental the title of best tyre brand. The leading consumer publication picked out Continental’s “excellent” dry grip and “very good” wet grip as the brand’s major positive characteristics. Brand manager, Tracey Hyem said; “To come out as the top tyre brand tested really shows the all round ability and quality of our products and we are incredibly pleased with the result. Which? magazine considers its ‘Best Buys’ very carefully, putting the tyres through stringent tests, so this really is an excellent result for Continental.”

Pirelli Out of WRC; Way Seems Clear for Michelin

Swiftly following the last-minute bid by Michelin to become a tyre supplier in the 2011 World Rally Championship, the current provider Pirelli has officially ruled itself out of the series next year. Paul Hembury, Pirelli’s motorsport director, told Autosport magazine that the sports’ lack of rule stability was a factor, citing “three significant rule changes in the last nine months”, as was the FIA’s rejection of Pirelli’s three-year tender offer in December 2009.

Conti Develops Smartphone TPMS Software

Continental’s tyre pressure monitoring system will soon be able to report to smart phones via pressure sensors in intelligent tyres. According to the company, the “filling assistant” system also lets the driver know when they reach the right pressure during inflation. Conti expects users to experience “enhanced driving safety and fuel efficiency” as a result of the system. The first series production of the Filling Assistant in new vehicles is expected from 2013 onwards.

The application, developed by Continental’s Interior Division, communicates wirelessly with the smartphone and specifies the exact inflation pressure of each tyre using a brief honk and blink signal can be given to confirm when the tyre has been inflated to the correct pressure level. Technical requirements for the system are a tyre pressure monitoring system with the corresponding sensors in the tyres and factory-integrated vehicle electronics with a wireless interface.

Conti Reports Top Billing in Autocar Rear Drive Test

Autocar magazine has performed its 2010 rear wheel drive tyre test, and Continental has good reason to spread the word about the test’s outcome. Continental Tyre Group UK reports that its ContiSportContact 3 has “proved its rear wheel drive capabilities” by taking top spot in the test, which was conducted using a Mercedes C280.

Schrader Rejects Magazine’s TPMS Criticism

Schrader Electronics, one of the leading suppliers of Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) has rejected criticism of the technology published by motoring magazine Auto Express. The article by Jon Morgan, published online on 6 August, said a number of car companies in the UK have voiced criticism of the European Union’s decision to make TPMS fully mandated by 2014. The criticism focussed on a suggestion that they are an unnecessary piece of technology and one for which some motorists have suggested that they would rather not pay, that the car industry was “furious” and there was a “backlash” as a result. Some of those quoted in the piece said drivers should take responsibility and check tyre pressures on weekly basis. Schrader’s somewhat pragmatic point of view is that this clearly does not happen.

Bike Magazine Makes Bridgestone Battlax BT-023 “Best Sports-Touring All-Rounder”

Bridgestone’s Battlax BT-023 tyre has been voted “the best sports-touring all-rounder” by Bike magazine six months after its launch. Bike, Britain’s best-selling motorcycle magazine, fitted sport-touring tyres from many leading manufacturers to its fleet of bikes and compared them, with Bridgestone coming out on top.

TyGre Tyre Recycling Method Billed as ‘The Ultimate Retread’

The Economist news magazine has referred to the TyGre gassification method of tyre recycling as “the ultimatum retread” in an article published online on 9 August 2010. TyGre, a project developed by nine collaborators including Tubitak Marmara Research Centre in Gebze, Turkey in a European Union-financed endeavour intended to make useful things out of redundant rubber researchers at the sees tyres transformed into silicon carbide by reacting them with sand. The resultant silcon carbide can reportedly fetch up to 10,000 euros ($13,000) a tonne.

Avon Storm 2 Ultra Lauded for Longevity

Avon Tyres’ Storm 2 Ultra sports-touring tyre has received praise from a round-the-world adventure and one of Britain’s leading motorcycle magazines. Mick Høy from Denmark is in the middle of a round-the-world adventure on his 1996 Honda VFR750 and he has good reason to appreciate the qualities of the new-for-2010 Storm 2 Ultra. “Back home in Denmark I can get around 10-12,000km (6210 – 7452 miles) from one rear tyre,” he comments. “During my travels through Africa from Spain I did 19,827km (12,312 miles) on one rear Storm 2 Ultra – crazy, but true! And the VFR weighs 450 kilos when fully loaded.

Consumer Magazine Questions California Inflation Regulations

Consumer Reports magazine is not a big fan of new California regulations that will force all auto service centers to check and adjust tyre air pressure for any customer vehicle they service, reports Tire Review. While acknowledging the fuel-savings and greenhouse gas reducing benefits of properly inflated tyres, the magazine suggested the new law could lead to unintended confusion and results.

Bridgestone Dueler “Highly Recommended” in Comparative Test

UK publications don’t test tyres all that often, but the Germans do and Bridgestone reports its Dueler H/P Sport has received a “highly recommended” rating – the highest available in the latest test from motoring magazine Auto Zeitung. The June 2010 edition of the magazine compared eight brands of 4×4 tyre in size 255/55R18. All were fitted to a BMW X5 diesel and subject to a number of on and off-road evaluations on wet and dry surfaces.
