Treadsetters Finalists in HSBC Business Thinking Competition

Telford-based tyre wholesale operation Treadsetters has beaten over 1600 other business to the finals of HSBC’s business thinking awards. The company, which earlier saw off strong competition to win its regional heat is now in line to win up to £5 million in lending and a financial reward of up to £100,000. Now, Treadsetters and just 17 other companies are vying for the title of overall winner of Business Thinking 2010 at the prestigious “International Insights” event in Hong Kong, which managing director Tim Davies is attending on 5 December.

Awards Judges Pumped About Goodyear Airless Tyre

Should NASA ever get round to popping back to the moon or decide to dispatch a wheeled vehicle to Mars, it can make arrangements secure in the knowledge it has an award winning tyre to draw upon. On November 11, US based publication R&D Magazine held its 48th Annual R&D 100 Awards and named Goodyear Tire & Rubber, together with the NASA Glenn Research Center, a winner in its ‘mechanical devices’ category. The award was given for both parties’ work on the ‘Spring Tire’, an airless tyre capable of transporting large, long-range vehicles across the surface of celestial bodies.

XPart Suggests Careful Choice of Garage for Winter Checks

Parts supplier XPart has suggested that motorists should choose their garage carefully when taking their car for a pre-winter service. “Garages have a duty of care towards their customers to complete maintenance and repair work with a good level of skill, within an agreed timeline and at a reasonable cost,” comments Barry Smith, UK sales manager, XPart. The catalyst for these suggestions was a damning report in Which? magazine earlier in the year that pointed towards a general lack of rigour in carrying out checks and repairs on the public’s cars.

Continental Tops Evo Tyre Test for Second Time in 2010

Continental has won evo magazine’s tyre test for the second time this year. The brand came top of the test on the front wheel drive Renaultsport Megane 250 Cup. The high performance car magazine tested nine of the most popular brands on the market including Continental’s new ContiSportContact 5 P in the popular 235/35 R19 size.

Referring to the Continental tyre’s performance the magazine said: “It set the standard in many of the tests, taking an almost clean sweep in the dry tests and rating very highly in the wet tests, too. It also garnered praise for its feel and abilities in the subjective tests.”

Goodyear 32nd on US Social Responsibility List

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has been named one of the Top 50 US companies for social responsibility by the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship and the Reputation Institute. The tyre manufacturing giant earned a rating of 74.4 in a survey of US consumers, leading to a ranking of 32nd on the 2010 Boston College Corporate Social Responsibility Index. Goodyear is the only company in the automotive or tire industries listed.

Nokian Promotes Safety & Eco Benefits of WR G2

There’s been a nip in the air of late, and Nokian Tyres has recognised this as the perfect time for a reminder that fitting eco winter tyres can help reduce vehicle fuel consumption. “Car drivers even can cut their fuel consumption even by half a litre on 100 kilometres with the environmentally friendly low rolling resistance tyre Nokian WR G2 if the air pressure is right,” commented Teppo Huovila, vice president of R&D at the Finnish manufacturer. “A rolling resistance lowered by 40 per cent saves six per cent fuel.”

Brityrex 2010 Gets Underway

The long-awaited Brityrex 2010 exhibition got underway today, with a significant increase in visitor footfall compared to the same point in the last show back in 2007. Apaseal’s Bruce Somerville, who is exhibiting at the show, described it as “the best start to Brityrex for many years.” Official figures have not yet been released, however exhibition organiser ECI International is expected to confirm these observations when it releases initial show figures tomorrow.

Taking the Plunge: The Good Tyre Guide and bridging the online retail/wholesale gap

The launch of Grouptyre’s goodtyreguide.com proves that the era of apps, widgets and plugins is upon us (see October's magazine for more on this). And while this column doesn’t normally single out individual companies for attention, the fact that we are running both e-Commerce and Wholesale features this month makes this story too apt to miss.

When Grouptyre announced it was seeking to bridge the wholesale/retail divide with a solution that not only ensures it has an online footprint, but also seeks to make the enterprise profitable for everyone involved, it certainly caught the market’s attention (see September’s magazine for details of the launch). That’s not to say that Grouptyre is unique amongst wholesalers in considering an online channel/B2B plugin approach. Far from it. Tyres & Accessories has it on good authority that all of the top three have looked into operating comparable systems. The difference is that Grouptyre is the first one to seize the initiative and take the plunge.

Value Tyres Named NMA Site of the Week

On 9 September valuetyres.co.uk was awarded the site of the week by New Media Age (NMA) magazine, scoring 81/100. Here’s how they commended the tyre etail site: “With a name like Value Tyres, you'd expect exactly that, and the tyre etailer aims to reinforce this with its website. Designed in an uncluttered grey and orange, the home page carried the Tyre Price Promise and a breakdown of the service it offers…The website makes buying very straightforward…[it] certainly does what it says on the tin.”

“Sensationalised Coverage” of Auto Express Tyre Test “Grossly Unfair”: Maxxis

Following the recent tyre tests in Auto Express, Maxxis noted what the company brands a “grossly unfair” reaction in “some newspapers”, which suggested that budget tyres pose a threat to the lives of drivers and their passengers. Maxxis International’s managing director Derek McMartin released a statement to address the “sensationalist language” used to brand budget tyres “bottom of safety league”, pointing out that secondary reports had missed the complexity of Auto Express’s comprehensive testing and that the company’s MA-Z1 Drift had performed creditably in most areas despite being a road-legal speciality drifting tyre. The tyre was given a rating of 94.8 per cent of the winning Continental SportContact 3’s overall performance in the 2010 Auto Express Tyre Test.

Klarius Chairman Named Entrepreneur of the Year

Tony Wilson Chairman and COO of the Klarius Group has been named Entrepreneur of the Year by a panel of judges acting on behalf of EN magazine, which bills itself as ‘the magazine for Entrepreneurs.” Wilson is credited with purchasing and swiftly returning to profitability the emissions control division of Arvin Meritor in 2007. He then repeated the move with the larger £300 million turnover Quinton Hazell buyout in February of this year, and reportedly returned that part of the business to profitability within three months.

Continental 360° Fleet Services Launched in the UK

On 14 September Continental Tyres Ltd gave Conti 360° Fleet Services its official UK launch. Sharp eyed Tyres & Accessories readers will have spotted news of the European launch of this programme on tyrepress.com back in February as well as in March’s magazine. Seven months later, the UK launch revealed further details of how this will be rolled out across the UK and Europe and how the British ContiNetwork model gave the impetus for what is now know as the Conti 360° Network.

Dates first. Despite being initially announced as operational as early as February this year, the official launch of Conti 360° Fleet Services was – as we can see in mid-September, however the big UK switch-on in is scheduled for October. The Republic of Ireland will join the ranks of the programme with it own independent dealer network – a first for Continental Eire – being launched in November.

Auto Express Tests: Sava Offering Quieter, Fuel-Efficient Ride

While it finished tenth out of twelve overall in Auto Express’s tyre tests, Slovenia’s Sava – part of the Goodyear Dunlop group – scored particularly well in the noise test, beating all the other contenders, and was ranked in second place in the rolling resistance tests, in which it scored closest to the runaway winner of that test, Hankook.

Auto Express Tyre Tests: Goodyear “Wet Weather Specialists”

While the big winner of consumer motoring magazine Auto Express’s annual tyre test was Continental, the German manufacturer had strong competition from Michelin, Goodyear and Dunlop, whose tested tyres all scored within a point of Conti’s. As with all comprehensive tyre tests, most segments favoured different tyres, and Goodyear’s Eagle F1 Asymmetric was ranked top in the wet handling and cornering tests.
