Safe Lifting With Michelin Jacks

Motorists who work on their own vehicles at home often want to lift the car to remove a wheel or even carry out an underbody examination, perhaps of the exhaust system. The emergency jack provided with the car is designed specifically just to enable a wheel change, lifting the vehicle at the correct point by the minimum amount required only to change a flat tyre. So having a robust small trolley jack at home is a useful aid to safe lifting for more extensive work.

Now That’s a Lot of Tyres!

The Port of Felixstowe recently welcomed the arrival of nine rubber-tyred gantry cranes from Zhenhua Port Machinery Company (ZPMC) of Shanghai. The arrival of the new machinery means that the Port has invested in forty-one gantry cranes from ZPMC since 2002, bringing the total number on Trinity Terminal to over 100.

Hofmann’s Best Selling Lift

Hofmann has been one of Europe’s top names in lifting for a decade. A year ago the company celebrated the 10,000th two-post lift with baseframe sold in Europe. Now another milestone has been achieved, 10 years ago the MTF3000 baseframe-less lift, recently sales passed the 5000 unit mark.

Penny Hydraulics and Renault Vans in Partnership

Renault Vans and Penny Hydraulics have got together to offer fully equipped tyre service vehicles, complete with tools and lifting equipment, available from £377 a month. A demonstration Renault Master highlights the two companies’ capabilities under a “Partners in Success and Safety” theme.

Majorlift Goes for Compac

Majorlift Hydraulic Equipment has a range of lifting equipment, including pit jacks, jacking beams and vertical and floor mounted transmission jacks.
For over five years, the company has also imported and distributed the well-known Compac garage equipment range, which perfectly complements the Majorlift portfolio.

Especially popular is the Compac 3 tonne trolley jack, which features a maximum closed height of 125mm and a maximum extended height of 510mm. It also has an additional foot pump for operator comfort.

New R9000 Evolution Sizes

Firestone’s flagship high-speed tractor tyre – the R9000 Evolution (launched in March 2002) now has two more sizes in the range. Initially launched in the popular 540/65 R30 size, it was joined by 440/65 R 24, 440/65 R 28, 540/65 R 34 and 600/65 R 34 early in 2005. There is now a 540/65R34 and a high speed version of the biggest size, 650/65R38. These have been launched to accommodate the new 248 hp Fastrac8250. Rarely for a Fastrac, that means there are smaller tyres on the front, like a conventional tractor. The new JCB is capable of lifting 10,000 kilograms on the rear linkage. The larger tyre sizes are said to allow for an increased load rating whilst minimising soil compaction thanks to the larger footprint.

Maywood Adds New Lift

Maywood Equipment Group has added a valuable new lift to it’s comprehensive range of electro-hydraulic models. The EHL 3600 has a 3.6-tonne capacity and is suitable for all cars and light commercial vehicles such as the Ford Transit. The lift comes in either single or three phase and has a lifting pad height of 95 millimetres. It also important safety features including: Mechanically operated safety locking mechanism; electronically controlled safety mechanism; load limiting hydraulic valve; manual lowering facility.

There is also the option of high lift pads for light commercial vehicles. This lift is the higher rated version of the well-known EHL 3000, which is already a top seller for Maywood. Maywood markets all its lifts through key distributors such as Unipart Automotive (Partco and Brown Brothers) and The Independent Factors Association.

New Maywood Lift

Maywood Equipment Group, the sole importers of the world famous Hofmann brand of lifts, has added eight and twelve tonne four post lifts to its range. Both models are supplied in three phase only and include safety deadman controls. In both cases the platform length is 8000 millimetres, which allows for a large range of commercial vehicles. The lifting time is only 55 seconds and both lift to a height of 1750 millimetre.

Maywood also offers four post lifts suitable for wheel alignment, namely the Quadrolift wheel alignment series, available with or without secondary lifting.
All lifts from Maywood are distributed through leading companies such as Unipart Automotive (Partco and Brown Brothers) and members of The IFA (Independent Factors Association).

Supply Direct Installs UK’s First Robotic Wheel Aligner

Supply Direct has recently installed the UK’s first robotic wheel aligner. The Nussbaum manufactured ‘WAB01’ is one of less than 30 worldwide and is located in Hodgsons-Toyota in Newcastle, which opens in early October.

According to Supply Direct, the installation of robotic equipment is not only a turning point for the company but also a turning point for the UK motor industry. It has revolutionised wheel alignment, saving time for workshop engineers therefore providing customers with a much faster and accurate service, the company says.

LiftOne Takes the Strain

Health and safety regulations apply to all businesses. But there are some matters that need to be given special consideration by employers. The government has earmarked ‘Lifting and Handling’ in the workplace as one of these key areas. In As far as tyres are concerned this has particular significance with regards to tyre bays, where fitters manually handle heavy tyres and wheels during the tyre changing process.

According to the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) more than a third of all ‘over-three-day’ injuries reported each year are caused by manual handling – ‘the transporting or supporting of loads by hand or by bodily force’.

The Monolift Revival

The Hofmann 2.0 Monolift, the company’s original single post lift, first manufactured 30 years ago, has felt a resurgence in sales, according to Maywood’s director Gavin Masterton.

“When I was MD of Hofmann we sold regularly at least one each week for many years but in more recent times sales had fallen to just a handful. Now under Maywood’s sole distribution of the Hofmann range of lifts, sales are rocketing to unprecedented levels.

“The great thing about the Monolift is that where you can park a car you can fit a Monolift and it can handle virtually every car available from a mini to a Rolls Royce!”

Maywood Launches New Lift

Maywood Equipment Group has launched a new electro-hydraulic two-post lift to be known as The EHL3000. The news follows requests asking for a three tonne lift suitable for workshops where the floor is not always 100 per cent level! Maywood’s distributors include Unipart Automotive (Partco and Brown Brothers) and The Independent Factors Association. This lift also has one of the lowest lifting pad heights of 90 millimeteres which overcomes the problem of low sills on many cars.

The new lift also has the special feature that the power pack can be on either column which means that the customer does not need to alter the power points in his workshop which saves considerable costs.
Maywood’s range of electro-hydraulic lifts includes 3.2, four and five tonne equipment in single or threephase.

Manual Handling of Tyres Guide Launched

The NTDA Regional Meeting, held at the Brityrex International exhibition on 11 May, played host to the launch of a new Guide to the Manual Handling of Tyres, drawn up by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in consultation with industry bodies and trade associations.

The Guide was launched by Chris Flint, HM Principal Inspector, HSE and one of the Guide’s authors. It is, he said, aimed at employers whose businesses involve the collection or delivery of new or used tyres and is relevant to employers who manufacture, store, distribute, collect, deliver and retail tyres and to retreaders, road haulage companies and bus operators. It is limited to dealing with the risk of musculoskeletal disorders arising from the manual handling of tyres during collection and delivery and does not cover tyre handling during manufacture and retreading.
