Esco Corp has added high tonnage/high lift jacks to its range of heavy duty hydraulic lifting equipment. Five new models are available, with lifting capacity ranging between 100 and 250 tons. All models are air/hydraulic powered and are balanced for easy moving on 13-inch pneumatic tyres/wheels. Lift extension saddles are stored in the jack’s base for easy adjustments to various lifting heights of 5, 9 and 12-inches. Stacking aluminium safety locking rings are an option as is air powered wheel drive for ease of moving. All models are built with heavy duty lifting holes. Each jack has a maximum width of 23-inches and will fit into tight clearance in mines, construction sites or railroad yards. Lifting stroke on the five models range from 14.5 to 22.75-inches.
Centrum International Ltd. is a new name for Tyres & Accessories, but as a newcomer in the sector we thought it was right to let the market know who’s out there now. According to the company, Centrum is “a young and dynamic auto garage equipment manufacturer.” The firm, which was founded in 2004, is based in Hong Kong with production facilities in China. Centrum’s production factory facilities are located in Yingkou city in China’s Liaoning province.
Cooper chairman, president and CEO Roy Armes has been named to the board of directors at the Manitowoc Co., a producer of construction lifting equipment. “Roy is a highly regarded CEO whose vast knowledge and global manufacturing experience makes him an excellent fit for our board,” said Glen Tellock, Manitowoc’s chairman and CEO. “We anticipate that he will make immediate contributions and be an extremely valuable contributor as we continue to execute on our strategic priorities.” Armes, 57, joined Cooper in 2007, coming over from Whirlpool Corp. Tecalemit Garage Equipment has secured the UK distribution rights for two well-known European brands of lifting equipment. The Devon based firm is now the sole UK distributor of the range of high specification, heavy duty hydraulic, commercial vehicle lifts produced by Germany’s Walter Finkbeiner GmbH. The Finkbeiner range of hydraulic lifts covers three main product groups; the FHB 3000, a mobile wheel-free vehicle lift suitable for cars and vans up to 3000kg; the HDS bus, coach and truck lifting system, incorporating a patented space saving platform design (capable of lifting vehicles up to 18m long and 50t gross weight) and the EHB mobile column lifts, which now incorporate the EHB /DC cable–free system.
With an estimated 6500 vehicle lifts sold last year, this essential part of a working garage’s life cannot be ignored. And as long as there are lifts, those using them need to be aware of how they can protect their safety and maximise the potential of their investments. In order to find our more Tyres & Accessories recently interviewed Garage Equipment Association (GEA) chief executive, Dave Garrat.
GEA members sold 5247 vehicle lifts, according to the last full-year figures in 2008. Add another 20 per cent for the remaining non-GEA members operating in the market and it is clear that at least 6500 vehicle lifts were sold in the UK last year. And what’s more, despite the global economic meltdown that began in the second part of 2008, this number represents an increase over the 2007 figure. This year’s figures are not expected to be so good as, in line with the rest of the business community, the lift sector has experienced its fair share of belt tightening this year, with garages and fast fits delaying purchase during the course of 2009. However, according to Dave Garratt, this doesn’t mean there has been a boom in sales of low-cost machinery. Rather, it is said to have brought equipment maintenance into sharper focus.

Berlin-based research company Leo-Impact Consulting has released a comprehensive (334-page) market study, entitled “European Garage Equipment 2008.”
The report examines the market for the following 12 product categories: Aircon Service, Battery testers and chargers, Body repair, Brake testers and testlines, Diagnostics, Dynamometers, Exhaust gas extraction, Gas analysers, Lifting equipment, Light adjusting equipment, Wheel and tyre and Wheel alignment. These markets are examined in seven different regions, which are Germany, France, Italy, UK, Spain, Scandinavia and Benelux.
The Garage Equipment Association (GEA) is aiming to raise standards in its industry by assessing vehicle lift installation and service engineers. The computer-based knowledge assessment is conducted at the GEA offices in Daventry and comprises of questions relating to the UK’s Lifting Standards and Regulations. Engineers achieve accreditation when they answer 70 per cent or more of the ‘closed book’ test questions correctly.
Gary Shepherd, president of the GEA, commented: “Knowledge of Health and Safety, British Standards and the Lifting Equipment Regulations together with product training from the lift manufacturer leads to the competence required to work as a professional vehicle lift engineer”. It’s our intention to raise the standards within our industry. Vehicle lifts must be installed and maintained correctly by a competent person and this assessment is the first step in measuring an engineer’s competence”.
The Maywood Equipment Group, sole UK distributor of the Hofmann, Omer and Finkbeiner brand lifting equipment, has announced its appointment as sole distributor throughout the UK of the Cascos brand of lifting products, beginning in April 2008. Although new to Maywood, Cascos, headquartered in Spain, has been producing lifting equipment for more than four decades, and today sells its products around the world. Maywood reports the company’s philosophy is to build a reliable product with first class materials and a high level of quality control, and deliver this together with first class service. The Kent based distributor adds that spares are also available for every Cascos lift produced throughout the company’s entire history – and at reasonable prices.
Cascos is said to have selected Maywood because, in the words of company managing director Carlos Cascos, “we wanted a partner who would insist on the importance of quality and had their own top level after sales service. Maywood also had a prominent presence in the market already selling other top brands of lifts. We are delighted to have been able to secure this arrangement with Maywood, with whom I see a great future .”
Renault Vans and Penny Hydraulics have got together to offer fully equipped tyre service vehicles, complete with tools and lifting equipment, available from £377 a month. A demonstration Renault Master highlights the two companies’ capabilities under a “Partners in Success and Safety” theme.
Current health and safety guidance means tyre businesses are well advised to investigate what options are available to them. And, in terms of the safety benefits, there aren’t many options better than automatic lifting equipment.
