Garage owners and testers imprisoned for carrying out fraudulent MOTs

Following a Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) investigation, the garage owners and two MOT testers who worked at the Kyhber and Berbice Garage at Endsleigh Industrial Estate in Southall were sentenced following pleading guilty to conspiring to fraudulently issue MOT certificates.

Shorab Jadunandan and Sanjay Spolia who were the registered owners of the garage employed Graham Cahill and Olayinka Fadayomi as MOT testers. During the investigation it was discovered that MOT certificates were being issued for cars that had never been tested on the premises.

NMRO and BRDO merge into single regulator

The UK Better Regulation Delivery Office (BRDO) and National Measurement and Regulation Office (NMRO) are merging into a single Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) directorate from 1 April 2016. The goal of the new entity, which will be known as “Regulatory Delivery”, will be to focus on regulation and enforcement. This in turn is likely to impact the way legislation such European Tyre Labelling is monitored and enforced.

GEA and IGA challenge waste oil burning decision

The Independent Garage Association (IGA) director Stuart James and Garage Equipment Association (GEA) chief executive Dave Garratt have agreed to meet Rory Stewart, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Environment and Rural Affairs, in early March to discuss concerns related to changes to the guidance for the Environmental Permitting (England & Wales) Regulations 2010.

Nokian to appeal 87 million euro additional tax bill

Nokian Tyres is to appeal a tax adjustment for the years 2007 – 2010, meaning the firm must pay an extra 87 million euros. 55 million euros of the figure are additional taxes and the remaining 32 million euros punitive taxes. Payment must be made in January 2016.

BBC: VW cheated in Europe too

The BBC has claimed that VW deliberately cheated emissions tests in Europe, in addition to the US emissions scandal it has admitted to. In addition the BBC’s Panorama programme also questioned the emissions behaviour of an Opel Zafira, which appeared to emit more NOx in both hot and cold engine conditions than European legislation allows.

Change to 4-year MOT will lead to more road casualties, says Bridgestone MD

In his position as Bridgestone’s north region managing director, as well as chair of the SMMT Aftermarket Section, Robin Shaw has expressed concern at Chancellor George Osborne’s plans in last month’s Budget to extend the deadline for new cars and motorcycles to be MOT tested after four years instead of three. Shaw believes the added 12 months will result in more cars running on tyres with tread depths below the 1.6mm legal limit.

NTDA members voice further MOT concerns

Experienced MOT testers across the UK say that delaying the first test from year 3 to year 4, adds to the risk a vehicle or parts will become worn out or defective. With some figures suggesting that one in five vehicles fail the MOT in the first 3 years, adding another year will not only exacerbate the problem, but also mean that many vehicles will no longer be covered by most vehicle manufactures 3 year warranties.

Safety not the only concern over four-year MoTs, says HPI

Following news that the Government plans to consult on extending the MoT period from three years to four, HPI, provider of the HPI Check, warns that the risk of clocking fraud could escalate significantly.

The new plans were announced in the budget, which prompted an industry backlash concerning the risk to consumer safety, if vehicles are left without an MoT for an extra year. However, HPI sees a hidden threat from clockers, who will take advantage of the extension to turn back the mileage and sell the vehicles on to unsuspecting buyers.

Micheldever CEO speaks out against 4-year MOTs

Duncan Wilkes, CEO of Micheldever Tyre Services Ltd, has spoken out against government proposals to extend the time until the first MOT, calling such a move “a backwards step for road safety and a false economy.”

Speaking a week after the chancellor of the Exchequer referred the MOT proposal in his annual budget, Wilkes said: “It is incorrect to assume the test is irrelevant for new cars: Vosa’s own data indicates that 20 per cent of three-year-old cars fail their MOT tests. This means that moving the first test to four years would result in an extra half a million unsafe cars on UK roads.”

Tyre standards, registration bill introduced into US Senate

A bill calling for the introduction of minimum tyre performance standards and compulsory tyre registration has been introduced into the US Senate. This bill, the Tire Efficiency, Safety and Registration Act S.1741, is described by supporters as legislation that would improve consumer safety and vehicle fuel economy, however some sections of the tyre industry have vowed to see the bill defeated.

IAAF the latest to condemn MOT extension proposal

The IAAF has reacted angrily to potential proposals to extend the frequency of a vehicle’s first MOT test from three years to four years and plans to lobby the government on reversing any such proposals, stating that the current test frequency is both safer and more cost effective for motorists.

TyreSafe voices concerns over four-year MOTs

TyreSafe has voiced concerns that four-year MOTs will negatively impact road safety should the government decide to extend the time allowed before an initial MOT from three to four years. The comment follows the announcement in the Summer Budget speech on 8 July by The Chancellor, The Rt Hon George Osborne MP, which said: “We will consult on extending the deadline for new cars and motorbikes to have their first MOT test from three years to four years, which would save motorists over £100m a year.”

MWSD preparing to take wheel messages onto European markets

Motor Wheel Service Distribution (MWSD) achieved vindication for its wheel safety message at European level when the component was named as a “safety critical item” in European law within the Roadworthiness Package. The issue – in this case the potentially unchecked fatigue caused to commercial vehicle wheels by being fitted to unsuitable hubs – is not considered over now that provision has been made in European law. “It’s made changes – real changes – out there, there’s no doubt about it,” Motor Wheel Service Distribution (MWSD) managing director John Ellis tells Tyres & Accessories. “There’s a commercial side to everything, but there is a real debate going on now, and that hasn’t even started in Europe yet.”
