Motorists leasing their vehicle could fall foul of law driving overseas – LeasePlan

According to a recent survey, over 15 per cent of Britons who take their cars abroad have admitted to driving on the wrong side of the road and only 1 in 5 bother to learn foreign laws in advance of getting behind the wheel. Alongside brushing up on the rules and regulations of driving overseas, motorists are now required to display a Crit’ Air sticker on their windscreen when driving through the French capital. Without it, drivers could face fines of up to £117.

‘Scrapping hard shoulder will risk lives’ – RAC

The RAC has announced that scrapping the hard shoulder on busy motorways will put more motorist’s lives at risk.

According to the RAC, more than half (55 per cent) of drivers do not know where to go if they break down on stretches of the new ‘smart’ motorways and 52 per cent did not know what an emergency refuge area was.

‘Filling in potholes no substitute for modernising roads’ – LeasePlan

A report from the AA shows that more than three-quarters (76 per cent) of UK drivers want all potholes filled within a week and 18 per cent want potholes to be filled within 24 hours of them appearing. LeasePlan UK’s managing director, Matt Dyer, has reacted to the story, outlining that the government needs to provide a better connected and dynamic infrastructure that suits both the needs of people and businesses.

Roads spending, Brexit caution, business rate relief in spring Budget

UK chancellor of the exchequer Philip Hammond’s spring Budget contained the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) upgraded growth forecasts for 2017, while predicting lower – but rising – figures for the years following the assumed activation of Article 50 as the country leaves the European Union. The government also confirmed an extra £690 million will be added to the £1.3 billion announced in autumn to improve transport networks in urban areas. In other transport news, the freeze on fuel duty has been retained.

LeasePlan’s motorway myth-busters

Figures obtained by BBC Radio 5 live suggest an 18 per cent rise in the number of people caught using the hard shoulder illegally between 2014-15 and 2015-16. It has been announced that drivers caught offending on so-called smart motorways in England could be offered re-education courses by police. Police chiefs said the new road rules were confusing motorists and more awareness was needed.

Global survey shows 74 per cent use mobiles while driving

A global survey from LeasePlan – one of the world’s largest vehicle management groups – reveals that nearly three-quarters (74 per cent) of drivers admit to using their mobile phone behind the wheel, one-fifth (20 per cent) claim to send text messages and almost one-in-ten (9 per cent) admit to using social media.

The Department for Transport (DfT) figures show that a driver impaired or distracted by their phone was a contributory factor in 492 accidents in Britain in 2014, including 21 that were fatal. Last month, the government announced tougher sanctions for motorists caught using their mobile phone behind the wheel, including automatically receiving six points on their licence instead of the current three and on-the-spot fines will be doubled from £100 to £200.

LeasePlan urges drivers to carry out simple checks

LeasePlan UK has reacted to the RAC’s 2016 Report on Motoring that revealed car maintenance was the second biggest concern for motorists. LeasePlan UK debunks motorway myths

This year has seen Highways England roll out smart motorways as a part of its ambition to reduce congestion and improve journey times in the UK. But, with that, Transport Minister Chris Grayling gave the go-ahead to remove 32 miles of hard shoulder on the M4, with 30 schemes proposed to permanently convert the hard shoulder into a traffic lane on around 300 miles of motorway.

One in five new car buyers ‘would be better off driving an electric vehicle’ – LeasePlan
