Union Counters, Goodyear and USW Remain Far Apart

(Akron/Tire Review) As promised, the United Steelworkers offered its counter to a master contract proposal laid out by Goodyear last week. The counterproposal was issued late on 15 September, and industry observers note that they were considerably different than the tyremaker’s offer, leading to concern that the two sides remain far, far apart. The union’s plan calls for protected status for all Goodyear plants, wage and benefit increases, and protection of retiree benefits, while Goodyear offered protected status to all but two of its plants, cuts overall employment by 10 per cent, and seeks cuts in wages, benefits and retiree benefits.

Ex-Conti Workers Rally

Former Continental Tire workers and their allies rallied in uptown Charlotte, North Carolina, after the annual Labour Day Parade on 4 September. They were protesting layoffs and free-trade agreements that harm workers. And they demanded a living wage of at least $10 an hour in Charlotte. According to local, pro-union news sources, the workers vowed to continue their fight for good jobs at living wages.

GM Sues Goodyear For Withholding Tyres

(Akron/Tire Review) The Macomb Daily has reported that General Motors has sued Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., accusing the Akron tyremaker of withholding tyres in an OE tyre pricing dispute. The suit, said the newspaper, was filed in Macomb County Circuit Court. According to the paper, the lawsuit claims Goodyear recently stopped delivering OE tyres for certain GM vehicles. The disagreement apparently stems from Goodyear’s efforts to increase OE contract pricing due to heavy raw material costs burdens.

Conti Workers in USA Move Closer to Strike Action

Union members at the Charlotte factory of Continental Tire North America Inc. have authorised the group’s leaders to call a strike, Mark Cieslikowski, president of the plant’s United Steelworkers Local 850, was reported as saying in the Charlotte Observer. But union leaders have “a long way to go” before calling a strike, as they are still trying to negotiate a new labour contract with the company’s managers, Cieslikowski said.

Continental Reaches Deal With German Union

German automotive supplier Continental AG and workers have officially reached a deal over how to phase out production the company’s Hanover Stoecken plant, the IG BCE union has reported. Continental will now push back the date for closing car tyre production in Hanover to the end of 2007 from the end of this year as once planned. There will be no forced layoffs, chief union negotiator Werner Bischoff told reporters.

CTNA Union Negotiations Fail

A new round of negotiations between Continental Tire North America and its union have failed to result in progress that could avert planned layoffs next month, company and union officials have reported. According to the Charlotte Observer, the two parties met for two days of talks but reached no agreements, said Continental spokesman Rick Holcomb. Continental sees the Charlotte plant as the company’s most expensive to operate and is seeking wage and benefit concessions from workers. After workers failed to agree, the company announced plans to lay off about 241 salaried and hourly employees on 15 March then 272 more in late June. Continental employs more than 1,000 workers at its Charlotte plant, where workers earn an average of about $21 an hour, excluding benefits.

Fiat Layoffs Lead To Trouble

Fiat has laid off 5,600 workers for at least a year while the company restructures. Those laid off blocked two main roads in Italy, while some of those who still had jobs went on strike in sympathy, halting work at the company’s Mirafiori car assembly line. More stoppages are planned and the metal-workers trade union is calling for a general strike in Turin this Friday. The Italian government has given Fiat the go-ahead to lay off up to 8,100 workers, some of them temporarily.

Loss And Layoffs For Pirelli

Pirelli posted a net loss for the third quarter of 325 million Euros, compared with a profit of 15 m Euros in 3Q last year. Chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera revealed that the company will close six factories and lay off 2,400 staff, representing 6 per cent of the workforce. Of the factories to close, three make telecommunications cables and three make energy cables. Tyre division results were good and the energy unit broke even, but neither could compensate for the poor performance of the telecommunications.

More Production Cuts From Goodyear

In the US, Goodyear says that it will reduce tyre production this month and next, due to weak demand for new cars and trucks. Cuts will be made across the board with no layoffs or shutdowns planned. The reduction follows a second quarter cut in production of six million tyres, despite increased demand as a result of the Firestone recall. Shares in Goodyear fell 20 cents at the news.

Goodyear Lays Off Five Per Cent Of US Workers

“The slowing economic market” is the reason given for the news that Goodyear is to lay off 1,400 associates at five plants in the USA. The figure equates to around five per cent of the company’s US work force and Goodyear would not say whether or not the layoffs were temporary or permanent. Production at the five factories is being cut from continuous operation to five or six-day working and the layoffs follow 8,000 job losses earlier this year, mostly outside the USA.
