Goodyear Backs G4 Challenge

Goodyear has renewed its contract as the official tyre supplier to the Land Rover G4 Challenge. Commencing in Bangkok on 23rd April 2006, the Land Rover G4 Challenge will travel through Thailand, Laos and Brazil before finishing in Bolivia on 20th May 2006. Goodyear Wrangler MT/R tyres will be fitted to all the Land Rover G4 Challenge vehicles including the new Range Rover Sport and Discovery 3 as well as the Freelander, Range Rover and Defender.

“The Goodyear Wrangler MT/R tyre displayed outstanding performance on the inaugural Land Rover G4 Challenge in 2003” said Matthew Taylor, Land Rover, managing director, “we are delighted to have Goodyear’s expertise to assist competitors as they 4×4 drive their way through some of the world’s most exciting terrain.”

World stage for launch of Hankook Motorsports at Wales Rally GB

Tyre giant Hankook has this week unveiled plans to compete at the very highest levels – starting with Wales Rally GB.

The company has joined forces with Warwick-based Silverline Motorsport to offer a dedicated motorsport service for rallying and racing in the UK.
And to launch the new venture in style, Hankook Motorsports has entered three drivers into three different classes in the British round of the World Rally Championship.

Goodyear Looks For Bigger Launches

(Akron/Tire Review) Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. is looking to launch a number of new products by the end of this year that will be “more impactful” than its already popular Assurance and upgraded Fortera and Wrangler lines. So said Bob Keegan during a briefing with analysts after revealing the company’s first half results. While he would not elaborate, Keegan told analysts, “We have more impactful products that will be introduced later this year.” Goodyear said sales of its Assurance line are well ahead of last year’s, and its revised Fortera and Wrangle light truck/SUV tyres are selling faster than its Assurance tyres.

ETD Changes Hands

London based tyre collection specialist Environmental Tyre Disposals (ETD) has announced a change in ownership which will take effect from Monday 1 August 2005. Following constructive negotiations over the past few months current majority shareholder, Paul Hanlon, has relinquished overall control of the company to managing director, Tony Allen who will now have ownership and control of ETD’s operations.

This development concludes a long running business partnership between Paul Hanlon and Tony Allen who in the last two decades have taken ETD from their initial launch as a modest casing dealer to their present position of being one of the leading players in the UK casing collection market. However, Mr Hanlon will remain with the company on a consultancy basis.

Consumers Have ‘Wait and See’ Attitude to Hybrids

(Akron/Tire Review) A new study by the Polk Center for Automotive Studies reveals that American consumers may not yet be sold on the idea of hybrid vehicles, despite fast-rising gas prices. The primary reason for their hesitation? Their feeling that there are added costs connected to hybrid technology.

MotoGP Welcomes Back Laguna Track

MotoGP has welcomed a new challenge with the re-launch of the American Laguna Seea race. This time however, the circuit that staged its last GP eleven years ago, will host 990 cc-MotoGP bikes.

The Laguna Seca circuit is known for its steep ascents, tight corners, fast direction changes and the famous drop-off zone as well as a notorious Corkscrew and a blind downhill S-curve.

SmarTire Completes Major Financing

SmarTire Systems Inc has agreed a major financing programme with Cornell Capital Partners LP that has resulted in net proceeds of $11 million plus a $160 million standby equity distribution agreement. According to the company the funds will be used to expand the company’s business strategy beyond tyre pressure monitoring and into the field of wireless sensing and control applications.

Federal Introduces FZ-101 Limited Edition Slick

Federal Tire has expanded its Federal Motorsport line with the introduction of the FZ-101, the first slick tyre in the FZ Combat Series. Exclusively produced in limited numbers for professional use only. Engineers at Federal are reported to have collaborated closely with Japanese racing professionals to deliver a tyre best suited to their needs.

Federal Launches “Federal Motorsport”

Federal Corporation held its annual shareholder meeting in Chungli, Taiwan last week announcing the launch of “Federal Motorsport.” The manufacturer’s new tyre lines, are a result of “years of intense research and testing by Federal Technical Center (FTC),” said Jamie Ma, president of Federal Tire.

Two distinct series’ will make up Federal Motorsport – the street-legal 595 Competition Series and the exclusive, limited production FZ Combat Series for professional circuit use.

Fleet Operators Cautiously Welcome 3mm Campaign

Following RoadSafe’s launch of a campaign supporting more frequent tyre changing, the influential fleet business has cautiously welcomed the initiative, while warning of soaring costs. Research has shown that wet stopping distances can vary up to 10 metres between 1.6 and 3 millimetre tread depths.

TVR Plotting MG Takeover?

The rumour mill is churning our speculation that sport car manufacturer, TVR’s, bosses are poised to launch a bid to buy what’s left of MG, Auto Express has reported. Not only that, but the report suggests that such a move would also see the company mothball its Blackpool, Lancashire, factory in favour of moving back to the currently idle Longbridge site in Birmingham. The idea is said to be backed an unnamed member of MG’s former management. Neither TVR or MG Rover administrator PriceWaterhouseCoopers gave any comment.

New Cars to Roll Out of GM Stable

(India/Rubber Asia) There has been a flurry of new car launches in the Indian market thanks to the apparent growth in the Indian consumers purchasing power. General Motors, the world’s largest car maker, for example, has even come out with a new strategy specific to the Indian market, the main component of which to launch two new cars every year in the country, from 2006 to 2008, local media sources report.

Mr. Rajiv Chaba, president of GM India, has said it would be a “mix of local production/assembly for voulume cars and CBU imports in the case of some lifestyle products”.
