Record Recovery Levels for Responsible Recycler Scheme

Statistics newly released by the Tyre Recovery Association show that for the first time members of the Association (all of whom are affiliated to the TIC Responsible Recycler Scheme) collectively recovered over 320,000 tonnes of waste tyres in 2005. This represented more than a 12 per cent increase over the 2004 figure (285,000 tonnes) and is the first time the Scheme has passed the 300,000 tonnes barrier. Indications suggest this figure will rise even further in 2006. The UK industry is estimated to generate 475,000 tonnes of used tyre arisings annually.

Dealers “Prepare” for Impact of National Firestone Campaign

Following the launch of Firestone’s nationwide publicity campaign, dealers are being urged to be ready to meet consumer demand. ‘Firestone Together’, which went live in tyre dealerships across the country on 1 May, is a consumer reward promotion designed to increase sales of the Firestone brand across the UK.

Millennium Winners Take A Trip

Viking International has named the winners of its Millennium competition. The Ultra High Performance Millennium tyre range, launched at the beginning of the year, was introduced alongside an exclusive competition for Viking’s business development staff, with the chance to win vouchers towards an exotic holiday destination of their choice.

First prize went to David Le Tall for exceptional sales results, closely followed by runner up, Steve Cockburn. They were presented with their holiday vouchers at the end of March by John Kemp, managing director for Viking International.

Just Tyres Opens Huntingdon Outlet

Following the successful launch of the company’s Aldershot branch, Just Tyres has now opened its first outlet in Cambridgeshire. The Huntingdon branch opened its doors on Good Friday, and is already reporting buoyant sales. Being new to the area, Just Tyres has been very active promoting the business focusing mainly on its transparent pricing policy and promise to sell nothing but tyres to customers. In addition, they have been offering customers free tyre checks, balancing and tracking, and given away a range of prizes to both to ‘lucky customers’ and prize draw winners, which is all reported to have helped drive people through the doors.

Millennium Performs Whatever the Weather

Millennium UHP tyres have been “a great success since” their launch at the beginning of the year, according to exclusive distributors Viking International. “Designed to compete with high performance premium brands in terms of performance, but priced at a level to provide excellent profit opportunities for our customers, it’s not difficult to see why Millennium has been so popular,” Viking representatives told Tyres & Accessories.

Cooper Taps Marks to Head Platform Launches

(Akron/Tire Review) Craig Marks was promoted by Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. to be its new platform launch manager, responsible for leading and overseeing the development, launch and production of new products. Marks joined Cooper in 1993 and has worked as a senior corporate industrial engineer and, most recently, as lead industrial engineer.

Bridgestone Malaysia to Raise Prices

Bridgestone Tyre Sales (Malaysia) is to increase the price of tyres from 1st April by an as-yet-unspecified amount, because of continuing high rubber prices, said managing director Yoshiaki Hirashi.

Pro-Cut to Launch First On-Truck Brake Disc Lathe

Pro-cut International (with a UK base in Cheltenham), will launch the truck market’s first On-Truck Brake Disc lathe at this year’s Commercial Vehicle Show. The TD502 is a new addition to the existing Pro-Cut on-car brake disc lathe range and is a unique product being introduced into the UK market.

Pro-Cut sales director Guy Carter said: “The need for this type of brake lathe has been identified after extensive research. The London Bus Company has already implemented this new lathe and are seeing excellent returns in time and money, whilst having the added advantage of reduced vehicle downtime, critical to any bus, truck or coach business.”

Amtel Plans 100 million Euro Fundraising

Amtel-Vredestein is to issue a four-year credit-linked note for 100 million euros ($119.8 million) within the next two months, the company chief executive recently told the Reuters news agency. “There are some technical issues to tackle. Once we have resolved them with banks, we believe we will launch these CLNs within one-and-a-half to two months,” Alexei Gurin told reporters.

Pirelli & C SpA 2005 Results Show Double Digit Growth

In 2005 Pirelli & C SpA achieved double digit growth in revenues (+14.6%), operating profit (+32%) and net profit (+31.3%) compared with the previous year. Publishing its 2005 full-year results, the group explained that it had reduced net debt to 1,177 million euros at the end of 2005. At the consolidated level, group revenue totalled 4,546 million euros, an increase of 14.6 per cent from 3,967 million euros in 2004. EBITDA totalled 568 million euros (12.5% of sales), an increase of 21 per cent from 470 million euros in 2004 (11.8% of sales).

Continental Launches SportContact3

Continental Tyres today announced the launch of the ContiSportContact 3. Featuring an asymmetrical tread pattern designed to enhance the driving characteristics of sports cars, offer shorter braking distances, and extra grip for better handling, this tyre has already obtained approval from Audi. The new Continental range also includes tread pattern options both for high-powered rear wheel drive sports cars and powerful customised vehicles.

The ContiSportContact 3 has been designed for manufacturers and drivers of sports vehicles – high performance tyres approved for speeds of over 150 mph accounted for 12 per cent of tyres across Europe in 2005. Continental anticipates that the proportion of these tyres will increase to 16 per cent by 2009.

Vredestein to Launch New Tyre and Logo

(Akron/Tire Review) Vredestein Tyres North America plans to introduce the new Ultrac Sessanta later this year, which the company says is its “newest trump card in the UHP segment.”

Giugiaro Design has also created a restyled logo for Vredestein. “The design of the new logo is more streamlined and the lettering is more powerful,” the company said. “The new logo is more in line with Vredestein’s image and Vredestein’s quality products in the top sports segment.”
