Apollo Tyres Planning China Expansion

Apollo Tyres is reportedly working on a strategy to enter China, currently the world's largest tyre producing and exporting market. If Apollo is successful in this venture it would be the first Indian tyre manufaturing company to establish a permanent production presence in China.

“We aim to be a global tyre producer with footprints in all corners of the world,” Onkar Kanwar, Apollo Tyres' chairman, said at the launch of the brand in Europe, adding: “Only China is out of bounds right now but we will chart a strategy to be present there as well, through either a joint venture or a contract manufacturing arrangement.“

Pirelli Real Estate is Now Prelios

Pirelli Group’s board of directors has agreed to change the name of Pirelli Real Estate (the wing it recently decided to spin off) to Prelios. The change will take effect when the separation of Pirelli RE from Pirelli & C, is finalised. During the same announcement Pirelli also revealed that Enrico Parazzini has been appointed as the firm’s new managing director finance. This appointment follows the resignation of Claudio De Conto, who held the same position.

Watts Tyre Group Retains Toyota Certified Status for 4th Year

Watts Tyre Group has retained its certified supplier status for Toyota for the fourth consecutive year. The award based on conformance with Toyota Industrial Equipment’s (TIESA France) supplier certification programme, requires that a series of “exacting measures” are consistently met over the course of a year and follows on Watts Tyre Group being awarded Supplier of the Year to TIESA in 2009.

Translogik Signs RFID Chile Distribution Agreement

In April Translogik Ltd signed a distribution agreement with RFID Chile. According to the company, the agreement combines Translogik OTR TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) technology and RFID Chile's “mining application expertise” to provide a real-time OTR tyre temperature and pressure management solution to the South American mining industry. The system was launched at the 2010 EXPOMIN in Santiago, Chile. Chile is the world's largest producer of copper.

Translogik reported “enormous interest” from some of the world's largest mining operations from across South America and Komatsu 830E field trials of the new system, with a large Chilean mining company, were scheduled to begin on 10 May. At this point a team of engineers from Translogik and RFID Chile planned to fit three OTR TPMS systems to Komatsu 830E dumper trucks fitted with 57 inch tyres.

Pirelli: Tyre Demand Strong in April

Pirelli’s latest “Tyre Market Watch” trend figures report strong global demand during April. According to Pirelli’s figures, volumes increased by approximately 15 – 20 per cent in passenger tyres and by approximately 30 in the truck tyres segment (up 60 per cent in OE and 20 per cent in the replacement market). Commenting on the Tyre Market Watch numbers, Deutsche Bank analysts highlighted the fact that in Latin America where 34 per cent of Pirelli’s sales and 43 per cent of its production is based, tyre demand “remains strong, in excess of 25 per cent up both in passenger and in truck tyres.” In summary the analysts characterised the second quarter as: “a good start even if volumes growth is mostly attributable to less profitable OE markets.”

Galgo Europe Wins National Export Award

Galgo Pre-Q was recently honoured with the “National Export Award of Mexico 2009-2010” (Premio Nacional de Exportacion). According to the company, Galgo was the only company of its type to have received this prize “making us best-in-class in what we do.”

Since its foundation in 1952 Galgo Pre-Q has aimed to combine modern rubber manufacturing and laboratory equipment with a total quality management system. In 1999, Galgo Pre-Q systems received ISO 9001 certification recognized by ANSI RAB (U.S.A) and DAR (Germany). But last year this was re-certified at ISO 9001 version 2008. Company representatives say the certification assures clients that the company uses high quality processes and keeps a continuous improvement programme. They also point out that part of Galgo Pre-Q’s process SAP R/3 integrated computer systems provide “timely and accurate information upon which to make operational decisions.”

Goodyear Seeing the Benefit’s of Last Year’s Actions – Kramer

“We are very pleased with our strong first quarter performance,” stated Goodyear’s recently appointed president and chief executive officer, Richard J. Kramer, upon the release of the company’s January 1 to March 31 results. The US tyre maker reports an improvement in tyre unit volumes, sales and segment operating income during the quarter, as well as a “significantly” smaller net loss despite a one-time charge related to the currency devaluation in Venezuela.

Hankook Q1 Operating Profit Surges 501%

Results for the first quarter of 2010, released April 22, show Hankook Tire’s sales to have increased 17.6 per cent year-on-year to 1.3 trillion won (£780.4 million) and operating profit to have jumped 501.2 per cent to 212.2 billion won (£124.1 million). The tyre maker’s operating profit to sales ratio was 15.9 per cent, up from 12.6 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2009.

Interstate Tires Participates in Latin Tyre Expo in Panama

Interstate Tire & Rubber has announced that it will participate in the Latin American & Caribbean Tyre Expo, which is scheduled to be held between 8 and 11 July 2010 at the Atlapa Convention Centre in Panama City, Panama. Interstate Tires reports that it will display its latest products on stand 694 during this show, launching the brand new Interstate Eco Tour Plus tyre and the company’s new commercial range to the Latin American and Caribbean markets.

Apollo Announces New South Africa Investments

On March 19 Apollo Tyres South Africa announced plans to invest R300 million (£27 million) in new equipment and technology for the company’s facilities in Durban and Ladysmith. The upgrades will be implemented over a three-year period.

Report: Tyre Companies Will Increase Prices in 2010, But Not By Much

Will the leading global tyre manufacturers be able to increase product prices during the course of 2010? Yes, but not by much. That’s the view of Morgan Stanley’s financial analysts who published their assessment in an investor report published yesterday (16 March). Affirming the position, widely held amongst financial analysts, that the tyre industry is historically able to maintain “price discipline,” they commented that: “All major companies have already released price increase announcements – the industry is disciplined.”

New Exhibition to Help Find Homes for Post-ITC Tyres

Latin Expo Group Ltd., a Panamanian trade group, is organizing a tyre exhibition and conference for Latin American and Caribbean tyre distributors in Panama City, Panama, 8-11 July 2010. Latin American & Caribbean Tyre Expo 2010, will be held at Atlapa Convention Center in Panama City, according to the organizer. Latin Expo reports that it is in the process of organizing a programme of international tyre industry speakers to accompany the exposition, according to a spokesman for the group, who said the group’s vision “is to bring the global manufacturers and suppliers directly to the Latin markets and to get the Latin dealers to those manufacturers in a familiar and inexpensive venue.” 280 exhibitors are said to have signed up so far for a show expected to cover around 85,000 square feet of exhibition space.

Aldo Pagliari to Take Over as Snap-on CFO

In the US, toolmaker Snap-on Incorporated has announced that Martin M. Ellen, senior vice president – finance and chief financial officer, has left Snap-on to become executive vice president and chief financial officer of Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Inc. To allow for an appropriate transition, Ellen will remain as Snap-on’s chief financial officer until 31 March 2010. Effective the same date, Aldo J. Pagliari, currently president – Snap-on Equipment, and formerly group controller/director of finance for the Snap-on Commercial and Industrial Group, will succeed Ellen as Snap-on’s senior vice president – finance and chief financial officer.

Nicastro Promoted to Senior Bridgestone Americas Role

Following the announced retirement of Bridgestone Americas, Inc. (BSAM) chairman, CEO and president Mark Emkes, company vice president, general counsel, chief compliance officer and secretary Gary Garfield stepped up to the plate to take on the positions of CEO and president. Filling Garfield’s shoes in his former roles is Chris Nicastro, who is currently general counsel, Bridgestone Americas Latin American Operations, and corporate compliance officer, BSAM. Nicastro’s appointment in this new portfolio of positions takes effect March 1, 2010, and will involve him taking over responsibility for overseeing the company’s legal and compliance functions.

Bridgestone Americas Chief Emkes Announces Retirement

On February 12 Bridgestone Americas, Inc. (BSAM) announced the upcoming retirement of Mark A. Emkes, the company’s chairman, CEO and president, effective February 28, 2010. On that date Emkes, who has been employed at the Bridgestone family of families for more than 33 years, will also retire from his position as a member of the Boards of Directors of BSAM and parent company Bridgestone Corporation.
