Rubbersolutions to Run Six Recycling Plants in Mexico

Rubbersolutions Pty Ltd has announced the “signing and receipt of deposit” for six tyre recycling plants in Mexico with Recycling Planet. All tyre-recycling facilities will incorporate new grinding technology aimed at reducing whole tyres to -80-mesh powder as well as the Patent Pending Tread Stripping machinery recently introduced by Rubbersolutions. This includes the revolutionary new mining tyre tread stripper/cutter.

At a recent launch representatives of all major Mexican political parties are reported to have supported the move. Recycling Planet managing director, Mr Alberto Frost commented that the company had conducted “worldwide explorations into tyre recycling equipment and were happy to announce that Rubbersolutions technology had proven to be the most acceptable.” Mr Frost also announced a programme of rapid expansion of tyre recycling facilities throughout Latin America.

21 Per Cent Sales Growth at Bekaert

Last year Bekaert achieved a 21 per cent consolidated sales growth. The total now stands at 2.2 billion euros of which 1.5 billion euros were generated in the “Advanced Wire Products“ business segment. Above average growth mainly took place in developing markets such as Latin America and Asia where the Belgian steel cord supplier managed to achieve a turnover of plus 32 and plus 49 per cent, respectively. Bekaert explains that these positive developments were the result of “organic growth” in 2004, but also acquisitions like the one in Slovakia. The company’s 2004 results will be published in March.

Goodyear’s Increases US Conveyor Belt Production

Flying in the face of suggestions that the US is outsourcing all of its positions abroad, Goodyear has announced that its new belt plant has increased its production capacity, while creating more jobs. In the past year the company has created more than 100 job, increasing its workforce by more than 35 per cent. The company says its expansion is a result of “growing demand from stepped up global mining activity.”

The Marysville plant is currently producing one of the largest orders in the plant’s 37-year history to be shipped to Latin America. The Goodyear Flexsteel ST3600 steel-cord conveyor belt is eight miles long and weighs 1,300 tons. When completed, the order will be shipped to one of the world’s largest open-pit mines located in the Atacama Desert of Chile, which produces copper, gold and silver.

According to Dennis Hare, business manager for Goodyear’s conveyor belt products, the overland belt will transport crushed ore four miles to the mine’s processing plant for separation of metals.

Goodyear Reports Better Than Expected Results

Goodyear has officially reported third quarter results that show “record sales and positive net income.” According to the company the improved figures were driven by improved operating results in all seven of its business segments.

Michelin Hosts Seminar On Rubber Tree Parasites

In Brazil recently, Michelin hosted the world’s first research seminar on parasites that attack rubber trees (hevea) and which are threatening the rubber industry in Central and Latin America. Microcyclus Ulei is a parasite that attacks and eventually kills rubber trees and Michelin has set up a laboratory and research centre at its plantation in Bahia, Brazil, where 14 resistant varieties of hevea have been identified and are being tested.

Goodyear Latin America appointment

Eduardo A. Fortunato (50) has been appointed president of Goodyear’s Latin American tire business, succeeding Chris W. Clark. Fortunato’s previous post of president and MD of Goodyear Brazil has been taken by Chris Corcoran, currently director of sales and marketing, Latin America. Fortunato joined Goodyear in 1975 in the Engineered Products division.

Loss And Layoffs For Pirelli

Pirelli posted a net loss for the third quarter of 325 million Euros, compared with a profit of 15 m Euros in 3Q last year. Chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera revealed that the company will close six factories and lay off 2,400 staff, representing 6 per cent of the workforce. Of the factories to close, three make telecommunications cables and three make energy cables. Tyre division results were good and the energy unit broke even, but neither could compensate for the poor performance of the telecommunications.

Michelin Sales Up, Revenue Down

Michelin’s third quarter figures reveal that revenue during the quarter fell 3.2 per cent. However, ignoring currency exchange rate variations, sales increased by 2.7 per cent. Sales for 3Q were 3.86 bn Euros. In unit terms, Michelin’s passenger car tyre unit volume sales in Europe increased by 2.5 per cent (replacement sales + 8 p.c, OE sales -8 p.c). In the USA, car tyre unit replacement sales fell 5 per cent, OE sales rose 11 per cent. Latin America and Asia showed double digit growth in both replacement and OE volume. In truck tyres, there were gains for Michelin in Europe and the US for both replacement and OE.

Bridgestone US Executive Appointment

Bridgestone Firestone Americas Holding Inc. has appointed Mark Emkes (49) as chairman, president and chief executive of Bridgestone Firestone North America, effective from Monday. Mr. Emkes has been with the company for 26 years and most recently headed up Bridgestone Firestone’s business in Latin America. He succeeds Isao Togashi, who has returned to Japan as head of global manufacturing for the Bridgestone Corporation.

Investor Update From Goodyear

The latest investor update from Goodyear reflects the worldwide state of the motor industry. US and European passenger car replacement sales were above last year’s figures, but commercial sales were down. OE shipments in the US were down, but level with last year’s figures in the European Union. Eastern Europe showed a flat replacement market and a 20% drop in OE supply. In Latin America replacement sales were down, but OE was up in May. A similar picture was painted in Asia. Throughout the world market increasing raw materials costs and reduction in auto manufacture output has affected trade adversely.
