Turkish Tyre Factories Pause Production

Two of the largest tyre manufacturing plants in Turkey paused production for a week following reduced OE demand. The Brisa (Bridgestone/Sabanci) plant which produces Lassa branded tyres initiated a week-long production break in order to “realign production” company representatives told Tyres & Accessories. Turkish Pirelli Tyres Corporation also halted production at its factory in the north-western province of Kocaeli, according to the Hurriyet newspaper. Around 2,200 workers are employed at the two plants, 1,072 of which work for Brisa and will remain on the pay roll, Turkish Tyre-Labor Union representative Huseyin Cakar told Hurriyet.

Lassa Launches New Impetus Revo

Lassa has announced the introduction of the new High Performance Impetus Revo tyre. In a like-for-like competitor comparison, the new Lassa Impetus Revo “performed well in all areas and exceptionally when compared for aquaplaning and riding comfort,” Lassa representatives told Tyres & Accessories. 27 Revo sizes will be phased in during 2008, with a furher 15 further sizes following in 2009.

“Smuggled” Tyres Trouble Pakistan Retail Market

Tyre retailers in Lahore, Pakistan have noticed a sharp increase in the number of “smuggled” tyres from India, China, and Dubai, causing putting locally produced brands at a disadvantage, according to The Post. One report suggested that the illegal business continues unchecked in the city, “perhaps in connivance with the law-enforcing agencies”. When asked, Bismillah Tyres at Ravioli Cinema told The Post that in earlier days, the profit margin was not as good but now, “we are doing a roaring business. It is because every other family has their own car,” he said.

Compass Group Appoints New Senior Sales Manager

Compass Group Ltd has announced the appointment of Raymond Attiwell to the role of senior sales manager in its Compass HD Tyres Ltd tyre wholesale division, working alongside sales director David Wragg.

Tim Chesney, Compass Group managing director, explained that this senior appointment had been made to booster the sales team in light of the recent expansion of the Group’s warehouse facilities and continued sales growth of the Company’s main GT product lines. Mr. Chesney commented “Raymond is a seasoned tyre industry professional with over 15 years of experience. He has had a senior sales role at Lassa tyres for the past 10 years and before that he was with CPK so he has the experience and in depth knowledge of the tyre industry that we require’. Raymond takes up his new position in November and says he is “delighted to be part of this dynamic sales team and I look forward to working for Compass Group and helping to build on their great successes achieved to date.”

Brisa Appoints New International Sales Director

On 1 May 2007, Levent Akpulat was appointed as international sales director, responsible for the Lassa brands’ international sales. According to the company, executives at the London office and sales coordinators in Istanbul will report directly to the new international sales director.

Levent Akpulat joined Brisa in 1992 and up until the beginning of 2006 he held a range of marketing, marketing research, business development, marketing and communications positions. Shortly before being transferred to the international sales department he was also responsible for the communication of both the Bridgestone and Lassa brands in the domestic Turkish market. Speaking to Tyres & Accessories, Akpulat stated that his range of communications and marketing experience means he will be at an advantage when it comes to promoting the Lassa brand.

Lassa’s Impetus Sport Gains Stamp of Approval

Germany’s TÜV standards organisation has recently accredited Lassa’s Impetus Sport tyre as having fulfilled their strict criteria regarding levels of performance, durability and handling. This is credit that Martin West, Lassa’s European director of marketing and business development believes confirms what users of the tyre already know. “We’ve been getting great feedback from drivers ever since we launched the Impetus Sport”, he commented. “It’s extremely satisfying to all of us at Lassa now that the innovation and technology that went into it has been recognised by our industry”.

Lassa say that the W-speed rated Impetus Sport has already become popular with distributors and dealers across Europe thanks to its combination of good looks and responsive, accurate performance. Designed in collaboration with The Bridgestone Technical Centre, the Impetus Sport possesses a number of design features Lassa believe helped it to achieve TUV certification, including a unidirectional pattern with wide circumferential grooves – designed to provide a high resistance to aquaplaning, a compound that maximises the tyres wet-grip handling, and reinforced body-ply and belt edges that allow for greater stability at high speeds.

Inaugural Lassa UK Race Day

UK tyre dealers gave a clear ‘thumbs up’ when Lassa held its inaugural UK Race Day recently. The day, which was held at Prestwood Hall in Leicestershire, was split into 3 sections – race track, rally and off-road. All the vehicles used had been pre-fitted with Lassa tyres, giving dealers a first-hand opportunity to test the Lassa range. In addition, the afternoon rain not only tested the tyres but also tested the skills of the drivers and instructors alike. In fact the senior instructor from the driving school went as far as saying: “Lassa tyres have done really well – they represent an excellent value-for-money tyre.”

With unit sales of 7.06 million expected for 2006, a domestic replacement market share of 26 per cent and thriving export sales, no wonder Lassa producer Brisa is expanding its manufacturing and warehousing headquarters. As Brisa (Bridgestone Sabanci Tyre Manufacturing and Trading Inc) continues the $176 million production expansion programme it started at its Izmit plant in Turkey in 2004, Tyres & Accessories went to see how the plans are developing and visit some of the company’s retail outlets in Istanbul.

Spoilt for Choice

Following the introduction of its Choices+ programme last year, Lassa is continuing with its plans to support distributors in Western Europe by introducing a new dimension to its Lassa Choice programme. The company’s latest addition comes in the form of the recently launched “Marketing Choices.”

In Lassa’s words, Marketing Choices is designed to help distributors maximise the effect of their own marketing communications programme. Marketing Choices includes information on marketing activities including advertising, direct mail and sponsorship through to the hosting of successful sales incentive campaigns and consumer promotions.

Lassa has announced that it will be exhibiting at the Autopromotec 2005 show in Bologna on 18 – 22 May. Autopromotec 2005 is attracting an increasing number of national and international visitors, according to the company. Demonstrating its faith in the show, Lassa describes the exhibition as a “valuable opportunity to further penetrate the Italian and international markets, and primarily to support their key customer base within Italy.”

Lassa Appoints European Marketing Manager

In a move designed to strengthen the brand’s “personality and profile”, Lassa has announced that Martin West will be the company’s new European marketing manager. The ex-Goodyear employee will join another ex-Goodyear man, John Westwood, in the European team’s central London operation. “Within the European arena, Lassa has remained a reasonably well-kept secret. The quality of the product is endorsed by all of the Lassa customers and the expanding range now provides an ideal platform to replicate the improved brand position enjoyed in the home market, where Lassa competes directly with the premier tyre brands,” said Mr West.

Obituary – Sakip Sabanci

Sakip Sabanci passed away at 6:00 am on Saturday 10th April, following a long battle against cancer. He was 71. As head of the Sabanci group, he presided over the establishment of Lassa in 1974 and the later joint venture with Bridgestone in 1988, as a result of which the company name changed to Brisa. A new factory was built at Izmit and production began in November 1990. Married with three children, he was the author of 13 books and, during his lifetime, was awarded no fewer than 11 honorary doctorates by Turkish and US universities. Other awards include the Crystal Globe by the European Economic Institute and the Turkish State Distinguished Service Medal. In 1999 Sakip Sabanci was elected “Businessman of the Year” by the FABSIT foundation in New York and was given the “Award for promoting Turkey” by the Turkish-American Businessman Association. With an estimated fortune of 2.65 billion Euro, he was reckoned to be Turkey’s richest man.
