Michelin OE on Latest Komatsu Mining Truck

Michelin XDR earthmover tyres are to be fitted as OE to the new Komatsu 860E-1K haul truck, introduced during September’s MINExpo show in Las Vegas, USA. The rigid dump truck is designed for the most demanding surface mine applications, and features a 280-ton capacity, 2,700-horsepower diesel electric-drive system designed by Komatsu. The truck is also designed with an optional factory-installed trolley option.

“The new Komatsu 860E will be expected to handle staggering workloads and requires a tyre that can not only stand up under tremendous weight but also perform under the harshest conditions for a long time,” said Luc Minguet, president of the South Carolina, US based Michelin Earthmover and Industrial Tires division. “Because of its durability and maximum wear life, the MICHELIN XDR tyre is the ideal fitment for the new Komatsu truck.”

Tickets on Sale for BTMA Dinner

Tickets for the BTMA’s Tyre Industry Dinner on Friday, 26 September at St John’s Hotel, Solihull are now on sale. The event – entitled “Rock Around the Clock” – has a Rock ‘n’ Roll theme, and will include casino tables and live entertainment, including a performance by the Illusionists. The dinner will be open to all BTMA members, with tickets selling for £98 plus VAT and £85 plus VAT for partners. Hotel rooms are available at additional cost.

Tickets for the event are strictly limited, and John Dorken – the BTMA’s Chief Executive – urges early booking for “the most exciting event of the industry year.”

In addition to all the entertainment already detailed, there will be a special raffle including some excellent prizes. Entrants could win a weekend for two in Las Vegas, dinner for two at a Michelin-starred restaurant, or a weekend for two in a luxurious Devon retreat.

New Sizes For US Yokohama OTR Lines

Yokohama Tire Corp. is unveiling four new OTR sizes at the upcoming 2008 Conexpo-Con/Agg Show in Las Vegas. The new sizes are being added to Yokohama’s RT41T (29.5R25 and 23.5R25) and the RB31T (26.5R25 and 29.5R25). “The RB31 and RT41 have an incredible amount of technology built into them,” said Gary Nash, director of Yokohama’s OTR tyre sales. “These advancements translate into improved performance and longer tyre life, which means equipment spending more time on the job making businesses profitable.”

Michelin Adds to Super Wide Line

Michelin North America has added to its X One super wide line with the new X One XZY3, an all-position tyre for on/off-road applications. The tyre will be unveiled at the upcoming Conexpo-Con/Ag Show in Las Vegas.

Designed to reduce vehicle weight and fuel costs, the Michelin X One XZY3 super wide features a special chip and cut resistant tread compound, the company said, and an original tread depth of 23/32 with enhanced stone drilling protection and a reinforced bead package. The X One XZY3 tyre is available in a 445/55R22.5 size. (Tire Review/Akron)

Amerityre Aims for “Significant Share” of Tyre Fill Market

Amerityre chairman Louis M. Haynie, has selected the the global tyre fill market as an immediate strategic objective for the company’s Amerifill polyurethane product. “Our closed cell foam tyre fill is less than half the weight of competing tyre fill materials. This translates directly into cost savings for the customer. In addition, the robust nature of Amerifill means that it can be used in a broad spectrum of tire applications, from wheel barrows to telehandlers. We consider Amerifill to be an exciting new business opportunity for the company,” he explained

Currently, tyre fill materials are used to replace air in many tire applications, including OTR construction, industrial and mining applications, to “flat-proof” and extend the life of rubber tyres. Amerifill is a proprietary polyurethane chemical formulation that is stable and environmentally safe in handling and disposal compared to existing petroleum-based fill products.

Goodyear Puts Wings on New GPS System

Goodyear has licensed its name to appear on a series of NCC-produced GPS navigation systems. The eight-model Goodyear-branded systems will be unveiled at January’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Touted as a “rugged GPS system,” the company’s eight models will have features never before seen on mobile navigation systems, including a remote control to access hands-free communication, with a single quick-touch button to answer and hang up incoming calls. “Managing your cell phone by remote control is an entirely new concept in GPS,” said Barry Rosenstock, vice president of operations for NCC. “But it speaks to consumer demand for driver safety and convenience, which is what these devices aspire to provide.”

The Goodyear GPS will employ Bluetooth capabilities for easy access to incoming and outgoing phone calls. Some models will also feature MSN Direct service for live traffic updates, local fuel prices, weather reports, and even local movie times. (Tire Review/Akron)

TRIB Sets Vegas Board Meeting

(Akron/Tire Review) Tire Retread & Repair Information Bureau (TRIB) plans to hold its Board of Directors Meeting on Monday, October 29, the day before the SEMA Show starts.

The meeting will run from 2 to 4 p.m. at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas; the specific meeting room will be announced later.

TRIB said its board meetings are open to guests and the tyre industry press.

SEMA: Record Number of Manufacturers Expected at Show

(Akron/Tire Review) SEMA announced that a record numbers of manufacturers have requested priority space for the 2007 SEMA Show. The event, which takes place this year from Oct. 30 to Nov. 2 in Las Vegas, is expected to feature more than 2,000 manufacturers. A total of 1,835 companies participated in this year’s priority space selection process, which began in April and concluded in May. That is about 100 more than had participated in previous years, SEMA said.

“Never before have so many companies come to us so early in the year and committed to participating in the SEMA Show,” said Peter MacGillivray, SEMA vice president of marketing and communications. “These exhibitors will be bringing with them thousands and thousands of new products – all which will debut at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas.”

Limited space is still available, and new manufacturers are continuing to sign up, according to SEMA. A complete list of SEMA Show exhibitors and floor plan can be found online at www.SEMAshow.com. The Web site also includes updates and information about the event, as well as an online registration form.

SEMA Moves to Simplify Registration

(Akron/Tire Review) SEMA says it has smoothed the registration process for past SEMA Show attendees in an effort to make it easier for “prequalified professionals” to sign up and attend the 2007 SEMA Show, Oct. 30-Nov. 2, at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas.

Those who attended the SEMA Show in 2005 or 2006 will have a personalized “alumni number” that verifies their trade status. The alumni number correlates to information previously submitted to help avoids attendees having to re-submit business documents and fill out several forms.

“The SEMA Show is about connecting businesses and buyers,” said Peter MacGillivray, SEMA vice president of shows and marketing. “While we’re committed to ensuring that the show is restricted to legitimate trade professionals, and we’re also committed to making it as simple as possible for qualified attendees to register and get down to business.”

Kumho Introduces New Tyres

(Las Vegas/Tire Review) Kumho Tire USA officially launched its latest touring tyre line – the Solus KR21 – during the SEMA Show. The Solus KR21 replaces Kumho’s 732 and 795 products. Kumho said the Solus KR21 delivers a refined balance of high mileage, low noise and exceptional ride comfort, along with all-season traction and confidence-inspiring handling.

The KR21 will be a “megaline” tyre, which Kumho said will reduces the number of SKUs a dealer will have to carry. The KR21 carries a T speed rating and a UTQG of 600, and will be available in the first quarter of 2007 in nearly 50 sizes, ranging from 155/80R13 to 235/65R18.

SEMA Show 2006: Kumho Launches Road Venture APT

(Las Vegas/Tire Review) The new Road Venture APT KL51, an all-purpose touring tyre designed for light trucks and SUVs, was introduced by Kumho Tire USA during the SEMA Show. Kumho officials said the new tyre features an all-season tread compound formulated to “deliver excellent wet and dry traction and enhanced mileage performance,” as well as “a comfortable ride, decreased road noise and driving stability.” The APT KL51 will be available in the first quarter of 2007 in 25 sizes with black sidewalls, ranging from 225/70R15 to 255/60R18, and in 11 sizes with outlined white letters, ranging from 225/75R15 to 255/65R17.

New Slogans For BFNAT

Bridgestone Firestone North American Tire (BFNAT) used its dealer meeting, run in parallel with the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, to unveil new slogans for its Bridgestone and Firestone tyre brands. “It’s Bridgestone or Nothing” is the new tagline for the Bridgestone brand, while the Firestone brand will be tagged with “A Tradition of Innovation.” Bridgestone UK and Europe representatives told Tyres & Accessories that there are no current plans to transfer the new slogans to markets on this side of the Atlantic.

SEMA Show 2006: Pirelli Teams With Foose Design

(Las Vegas/Tire Review) Pirelli Tire North America announced that it will become the exclusive tyre supplier to Foose Design. Foose Design founder Chip Foose, according to Pirelli, “has almost single-handedly brought the pleasures of creative automotive design to the American public through his regular TV appearances.” The first fruits of the partnership are all over the SEMA Show floor – some 30 Pirelli shod Foose vehicles are on display at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

SEMA Show 2006: Goodyear Eagle Gets Magazine Honours

(Las Vegas/Tire Review) US Magazine, Popular Mechanics, has awarded Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. with its Editor’s Choice Award in recognition of the tyremaker’s development of the Eagle ResponsEdge with Carbon Fiber radial introduced earlier this year. The magazine award recognized Goodyear’s achievement in new product design and innovation. Of the 17 automotive products honoured with the Editor’s Choice Award, the Goodyear Eagle ResponseEdge was the only tyre honoured.

SEMA Show 2006: Kumho Adds Ecsta Run-flat

(Las Vegas/Tire Review) Kumho Tire USA expanded its lineup of run-flat tyres with the addition of the Ecsta SPT XRP. Initially, Kumho will offer 13 run-flat sizes of the Ecsta SPT XRP, ranging from 195/55R16 to 245/45ZR18. “Owners of vehicles that are equipped with run-flat tyres don’t have a lot of options when it’s time to replace those tyres,” said Rick Brennan, Kumho’s director of brand management. “The SPT XRP will offer these drivers an ultra high performance alternative to the OE runflats.” The SPT XRP enables a driver who experiences a loss of tyre air pressure to get his vehicle to a place where the tyre can safely be changed or repaired. The SPT XRP can be driven up to 50 miles at 50 mph with no air in the tyre, Kumho said.
