With GT Assist, Giti Tire now offering full fleet portfolio

Following its pilot introduction in Italy, a year ago Giti Tire rolled out its GT Assist commercial vehicle roadside service assistance programme in the UK. The launch of this 90 minute response service, which is operated in collaboration with the RAC, means that since the end of last year Giti Tire has been able to offer a full fleet portfolio of new GT Radial tyres, GT REE Tread mould cure retreads, along with tyre maintenance through its network of more than 180 independent dealers in the UK and Ireland.

Label’s effect has been weak or non-existent, says French association boss

The head of the Syndicat des professionnels du pneu (SPP), the organisation representing the tyre industry in France, has added his voice to those who say the European tyre label has little influence on consumer purchase decisions. SPP president Régis Audugé was quoted by Reuters on 13 November as saying “The effect (of the label) has been weak, not to say non-existent.”

Testworld publishes winter and studded tyre tests

Artic tyre and vehicle test centre Testworld has published a winter and studded tyre test database called safewintertyre.eu. The centre based in Ivalo, Finland has published the results of 128 tyres categories as studded, un-studded Nordic and un-studded mid-Europe. And while the first two categories are fairly specialised, the last contains one performance metric for 49 mainstream winter tyres. So far the tests are limited to what the firm calls “ice braking” metrics, which set the tyres against an as-yet unnamed standard reference tyre.

CITExpo 2013: Tyrepress show review

Taking place at the Shanghai Everbright Convention & Exhibition Center, Reliable International Exhibition Services has staged another successful China International Tire Expo (CITExpo), the eleventh edition of the show. Tyrepress visited the show on 4-6 September, 2013 in its capacity as a media sponsor, speaking with many of the exhibitors on themes of increasing importance in the Chinese tyre industry, such as the post-boom development of tyre brands.

Uniroyal launches new RainSport 3 tyre

Uniroyal has launched the latest generation of its wet weather-orientated RainSport line. However as much as this launch is a definite upgrade and refresh of its classic wet product after more than a decade in service, the move also represents a renewal of attention on the very well established brand. As well as bringing the RainSport range into the labelling age (every single fitment in the wide 185/55 R14 to 305/30 R19 range has scored an A in wet grip), the RainSport 3 seeks to extend its “best in wet” reputation further with a few percentage points of improvements in virtually every other respect as well. The exceptions are wear and noise, which remain relatively static compared with the predecessor product.

Dutch firm combines DriveRight with national number plate database

VWE (a provider of VRM license plate search technology in the Netherlands and also a reseller of DriveRight products) has produced a case study demonstrating usage of Drive Right tyre and wheel data. VWE has linked the data from DriveRight directly with the Dutch number plate register. This allows customers to get the correct combination of wheels and tyres for their vehicle by using their number plate in the website search, where the VWE solution is available. Profile Tyrecenter from the Netherlands has become the first company to use this database and, in the company’s own words, take a step ahead of their competitors.

Fleet awareness of label growing

The results of a fleet survey carried out for Goodyear in June and July show that 81 per cent of all fleet operators are aware of the EU tyre label. According to the MV2 Conseil survey of approximately 500 fleet managers in France, Italy, Germany, Poland and Spain, 55 per cent know the details of the tyre label legislation and a further 26 per cent are aware of it but recognise a need to learn more. Only 19 per cent of fleet managers responded that they’d never heard of the EU tyre label.

Tyre tests database a new feature on relaunched Tyrepress

A new feature coming to Tyrepress in the relaunched version of the site is a database of European tyre test results. The feature has been a part of German sister site Reifenpresse.de’s service for some time, and as a result the database offers more than 3,500 tyre test results. Tyrepress editor Chris Anthony says that the feature forms “a key part of our newly updated website.”

Mytyres.co.uk conducting labelling research too

Just a day after we announced the first early details of the NTDA’s national tyre labelling survey, it has now emerged that mytyres.co.uk is also managing a survey on a very similar subject.

Writing in a customer email dated 2 September 2013, mytyres.co.uk explained the background to tyre labelling before going on to explain that company is interested in learning more about what consumers themselves think of labelling.

NTDA survey: Labels trumped by price concerns

Almost a year after point of sale tyre labelling became mandatory in Europe, the NTDA has revealed that it plans to release the details of a survey into attitudes towards labelling at the association’s annual dinner in October.

Almost 12 months since the labelling of tyres at the point of sale became mandatory across the EU and the UK, the NTDA wondered what effect, if any, it has had on the way tyres are sold – have customers become better informed and more knowledgeable? Are they aware of the introduction of the label? Do they appreciate the information on it? And how important is this relative to price?

Toyo launches the new Snowprox S943

Toyo has launched a new winter tyre designed to offer “a safer winter driving experience” and offering significant improvements in all key labelling characteristics as well. Massive improvements in both rolling resistance (19 per cent) and tyre wear (37 per cent) are the highlights of what is quite clearly a new generation product.

International logistics company 'saving' with Michelin tyre policy

Following its employment of a full Michelin tyre policy for its trailer fleet in July 2011, Manchester based logistics specialist Davies Turner estimates it has saved more than £20,000 as a result of the decrease in tyre failures. The company says that pre-Michelin it dealt with at least one tyre-related breakdown per month from competitor remould tyres. The haulier’s 42 trailers collect hanging garments from North Africa, transporting them through Europe to the UK, with third party hauliers providing the traction. Each tyre failure that occurred overseas cost approximately £900 in call-out charges, tyre replacement and associated downtime.
