Daly Tyres to Promote Kenda at Brityrex 2010

Just about a year after Daly Tyres opened a new wholesale distribution centre in Stoke-on-Trent, the Ireland-based firm is to use Brityrex 2010 as a platform to showcase the Kenda brand in the UK.

“Kenda is a very progressive company and we view them as a great partnership for our business. Brityrex will be the perfect platform to market Kenda and our other product ranges and will be the place for UK and Irish retailers to meet suppliers covering all aspects of the tyre business,” Eamon Daly said when confirming his company’s involvement in the show.

Deldo Strengthens Budget Portfolio

The frigid winter we all experienced was good news for Deldo Autobanden NV. The Antwerp, Belgium based wholesaler was inundated with requests from unprepared dealers for cold weather tyres, and even in these balmy summer months the memory of Jack Frost is helping propel sales. “We are already having a great winter season,” confirms Deldo’s international sales and marketing manager, Rutger Veerman. “As of June 1 we had already sold 70 per cent of all our winter tyres. This is the first time we have seen people ordering this early in the season; they are doing so because the last winter season was of course cold and people had difficulties finding enough tyres. People are therefore ordering as early as possible to secure some of their winter business.”

Kenda “Excited about Labelling”, Constructing Factory

Kenda Rubber has confirmed a passenger car tyre factory alongside its existing Yun-Lin plant in Taiwan is “on target” to enter production in the second quarter of 2011 and reach a daily capacity of approximately 5,000 tyres in 2012. According to company sales and marketing representative, Eric Yang, “The factory will be adjacent to an existing factory Kenda owns in Taiwan. The radial addition will allow Kenda to make products that will satisfy mainly the domestic market along with countries that carry tariffs or duties on Chinese-made tyres. The line of tyres that will be produced from the new factory has not been fully determined, but the KR 17 Kenetica (which is sold mostly in the United States) along with the new KR 28 Klever A/T (to debut in the last quarter of 2010 in the US), which will most likely be patterns we will first introduce the new factory.

Infinity Continues to Develop Brand alongside Large Manufacturers in Hall 3

The Infinity brand was presented as part of a 240sqm island stand (shared with its manufacturer Shandong Linglong) situated within Hall 3, a fair indication of the global ambitions explained in previous articles (“Infinity Aims to 'Go Deep' with Fast Growing 'Premium Budget' Strategy” on tyrepress.com), since this was where many of the world’s largest manufacturers also placed their stands.

Goodyear’s LHT II – Low Rolling Resistance Without the Drawbacks?

Newton’s First Law of Motion states that ‘every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it’. For tyres, this external force is seen in rolling resistance, and it is primarily caused by the repeated deformation and recovery of the tyre as it comes into contact with the road surface. Reducing rolling resistance is, in theory anyway, relatively simple – yet achieving a reduction in rolling resistance without compromising on other essential tyre qualities is another matter entirely. In designing its latest generation trailer tyre, the Marathon LHT II, Goodyear referred to this as “mission impossible”. Yet through much research and development work the tyre maker believes it has achieved this seemingly unreachable goal.

The Guardian Publishes Michelin-Sponsored Tyre Labelling Roundtable

The Guardian has published comments made by the eleven participants in a roundtable discussion about the new European tyre labelling system, which will be introduced in November 2012. Operating the Chatham House rule (attributing no comments to those who made them), the discussion was split into the categories of what information the labels will contain – the tyre’s fuel efficiency, wet grip characteristics and road noise – and what the current labels do not contain – specifically the make and model of the tyre graded and the lifecycle of the tyre; both features that similar labels in the USA do contain.

Tyre Dealers Feature in Guardian Labelling Article

On 6 May Tyre retailers, fleet operators and consumer organisations took part in a panel discussion on the subject of tyre labelling organised by The Guardian in association with Michelin. The event, which took place at the Aviator hotel in Farnborough, was hosted by and was chaired by the newspaper’s executive environment editor Joe Confino.

According to the resulting report, which is scheduled for publication in the Society supplement of tomorrow’s newspaper, the discussion covered various aspects of the forthcoming EU legislation concerning tyre labelling, which Michelin says it “wholeheartedly supports”. Topics included the likely effects on the tyre retail industry, both in-store and on the internet, and fleet operations. Previous experience of this type of labelling was brought to the table by David Evans of consumer organisation Which? and this centred around the similar labels found on white goods and its effect on consumer behaviour.

Vredestein Releases 186mph Winter Tyre

It is just over a year since Dutch manufacturer Vredestein was acquired by Apollo Tyres and adopted a greater focus towards high performance tyres and products for top-end vehicles, and at the Reifen 2010 exhibition in Essen, Germany the company presented the first major addition its product portfolio since these significant events took place. Known as the Wintrac Nextreme, the high performance cold weather tyre is the second winter tyre ever to be developed in collaboration with Italian design house Giugiaro, whom Vredestein has worked together with for more than a decade.

TyreCheck Launches INContact Tyre Labelling System

TyreCheck, which supplies business automation, CRM, and fleet and tyre management solutions to the global tyre market, has announced that it is launching INContact at Reifen 2010. The latest release reportedly incorporates solutions for the new EU tyre energy labelling system in addition to its enhanced IN (Intelligent Newtech) fleet management and inspection products. Kwik Fit Offers ‘F1 Tyres at Go-Kart Prices’

Kwik-Fit, the UK’s largest tyre retailer, is running a promotion offering Bridgestone tyres at discounts of up to 35 per cent for eight days between 24 and 31 May. All sizes of Bridgestone – the sole tyre supplier for Formula 1 since 2007 which appears to be ending its supply deal at the end of 2010 season – are said to be included. According to a press release publishing details of the deal, retail prices start from just £27.30 each and the tyres are being marketed as “a premium tyre without the price premium.”

Brickhill: Tyre Labelling to Facilitate Tyre Value Conversation

Continental Clarifies Tyre Labelling Report

Continental Tyre Group, the UK arm of tyre and automotive supplier Continental AG, has sought to clarify comments made on motoring website motortorque.com which criticised forthcoming tyre labelling laws. In an interview published on 4 May 2010 the website said UK managing director David Smith described the planned labelling system as “not worth the paper it’s printed on.”

However, Continental representatives said this was a misunderstanding of what was said: “In a response to a recent direct question regarding the upcoming EU label, the intention was to highlight the benefit to the consumer of the more encompassing tests carried out and published by a number of European motoring magazines and motoring organisations. It was also intended to highlight the consistent leading performance of the major tyre brands in these tests, regardless of which part of the world in which they are produced.”

Cooper Increases Longevity, Decreases Noise with New CS2 PCR Tyre

Cooper Tire has launched a new product for small and medium sized family cars, which it claims boasts a reduction in road noise and a longer lifespan than its predecessor. The company states that it has used the latest pitch sequencing technology to create the Cooper CS2, a step to reduce the tyre’s noise levels and provide the quiet running required by the latest EU legislation (otherwise known as s-marking).

What Will Reifen 2010's 550 Exhibitors Bring to the Show?

With tyre businesses forced to face the unprecedented combination of global recession, high raw material costs and increasingly thorough legislative demands, the two years since the last Essen show have been some of the toughest in the market’s history. And yet, if you will excuse the pun, the tyre business seems to have a perpetual ability to “bounce back” in the face of adversity. In fact some brands – largely those operating in the mid and upper mid range segments – actually outperformed their pre-recession sales records, resulting in increased market share at least in terms of units sales.

That said, all businesses have had to cope with the same credit crunch-induced reticence amongst consumers to spend any money at all, while at the same time having to deal with (either directly for the manufacturers or indirectly for those importing, wholesaling and trading) high input costs for raw materials such as natural rubber.

BATO to Round Up Non-Compliant Tyres

Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations has notified the US National Highway Transport Safety Organisation that it intends to recall a total of some 768 non-compliant tyres imported from Japan between 2006 and February 2010. The offending items, Potenza RE050A, B390 and Turanza ER30 products, were manufactured for use on North American built vehicles intended for export markets and thus do not feature the DOT symbol and other labelling information legally required in the United States.
