Goodyear EfficientGrip receives GreenWorks’ “Green Innovation Award”

Goodyear’s EfficientGrip tyre has been awarded The Green Innovation Award by GreenWorks, a Luxembourg platform dedicated to companies sensitive to environmental impact and initiatives that favour sustainable development. “This award values all the efforts the Goodyear Innovation Centre, Luxemburg (GIC*L) team has made to reduce the CO2 footprint with innovative technologies applied not only to the EfficientGrip tyre, but to all our newly developed tyres,” said Marc Junio, general director of GIC*L. “Such innovative technologies are required in light of the upcoming EU regulations, which require tyre labelling containing fuel efficiency, noise and wet performance information as of 2012.”

Goodyear Dunlop’s James Bailey informs One Show viewers about tyre labelling

James Bailey, who was appointed director, brand PR in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region for Goodyear Dunlop at the beginning of the year, has appeared on BBC Television’s The One Show, explaining to segment presenter Carol Vorderman the importance of correct tyre pressure, tread patterns and tread depth for driving in the wet. Bailey took the opportunity to talk about the tyre label – with a close-up of the label itself – showing it to around 4 million teatime viewers of the magazine show. The 14 April edition of the show can be accessed by UK internet users via the Corporation's iPlayer website for the next week.

Deldo ready for the coming year

We’ve just emerged from a season that saw winter tyre sales go through the roof, and the word from many within the wholesale and retail industry is that if you couldn’t make a profit selling tyres during the winter of 2010/11, you really should find yourself a new vocation. Belgium based wholesaler Deldo Autobanden N.V. needn’t worry; it says that the winter season and 2010 in general was “very good” for the company – and not just because of its strong winter tyre sales. When speaking with Tyres & Accessories, Deldo international sales and marketing manager Rutger Veerman shared that last year the wholesaler built upon a recent pattern of growth, and is continuing to do so.

Tyreman promotes EDIWheel compatible e-Commerce solutions

Forward thinking companies have been investing in IT solutions as part of their business strategy for some time, but according to software supplier those investing in downtimes such as now are making the wisest decision.

“Whilst the temptation for many is to spend as little as possible on IT infrastructure, the reality is that a business that invests in their computer system to help perform the back office tasks in a branch, release staff to provide better customer service and concentrate on maximising margin. This is particularly important in the tough trading times the industry is currently experiencing,” company representatives wrote in a statement sent to Tyres & Accessories on 28 February.

Rhodia to boost HDS capacity at French, US facilities

Newly announced capacity increases at two Rhodia facilities, together with the company’s recently inaugurated plant in Qingdao, China, will increase Rhodia’s global highly dispersible silica capacity by more than 40 per cent. The French specialty chemicals company is investing in its Chicago Heights plant in the US and its Collonges-au-Mont-d’Or facility in France to give the plants a combined 32,000 tons per annum additional HDS production capacity. Start ups are respectively planned in the fourth quarter 2011 and the first quarter 2012.

TyreReviews website suggests need for increased nuance in tyre categorisation

TyreReviews website is suggesting “an easier, more consistent” way to help drivers select the tyre best suited to their needs: a vastly increased number of categories into which tyre types could be sorted. With the wide range of tyres on the market currently describing themselves as “high performance”, for example, the website’s designer and administrator Jonathan Benson believes that some more levels of differentiation could benefit the consumer, in addition to his own website, on which the consumer-reviewed tyres are grouped into 37 unique categories.

2011 TAFF Awards to be Held in Birmingham

Japanese Motorists Would Pay Extra for Fuel Efficient OE Tyres – Study

Upon the release of its JDPower Asia Pacific 2010 Japan Original Equipment Tire Customer Satisfaction Index Study, the global marketing information company reports that Japanese motorists are becoming increasingly well disposed towards fuel-efficient tyres and says that, if given the option, a “sizable percentage” would be willing to pay extra to have fuel-efficient tyres equipped on their new vehicle.

Reifen China 2010 Had 39% More Visitors

For the fourth time in its history, Reifen China welcomed floods of visitors through the doors of the Shanghai New International Expo Center on 25 November where over 100 exhibitors from some of the country's leading suppliers and traders were waiting to share details of the latest products and business developments. The headline news is that by the end of this year’s show on 27 November, Reifen China had attracted a total of 9356 trade visitors from 75 countries – an increase of over 39 per cent compared with the previous year (2009: 6,693).

Interstate’s Chinese Business Growing Fast

Between 27 and 27 November 2010, Interstate Tire & Rubber Co. hosted its augural Chinese Interstate distributor meeting at Nantong, China. Tyres & Accessories met up with vice president Theo de Vries and learnt that the company’s products, which are well-known in Europe, are gaining increased distribution in the Chinese domestic market.

Interstate’s first dealer meeting saw the company bring together more than 120 local Interstate distributors at the Grand International Hotel, Nantong. Distributors reportedly came from all over China and flew in from all several provinces across China -from the nearby Jiangsu to the remote Yunnan province. With Wholesale operations across all China and retail operations in the provinces of Jiangsu, Shanghai and Shandong, there is every indication that Interstate China is continuing to grow rapidly. For 2011 the company’s ambitious goal is to open 12 more retails outlets and increase sales by more than 40 per cent.

New European Rules on the Notification of Chemical Substances

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is highlighting the European Chemical Agency’s (ECHA) campaign to remind companies that new rules on classification, labelling, packaging and notification of chemical substances came into force on 1 December 2010. From December, within one-month of placing a chemical substance on the market, all companies involved in their manufacturer or import will need to notify the ECHA for their inclusion in the new Classification and Labelling Inventory.

Having recently joined the Imported Tyre Manufacturers Association, Sailun Tyres was pleased to host the latest meeting at their European Headquarters in Birmingham. Welcoming ITMA president David Seward (managing director, Yokohama) and fellow Association members, Martin West (European managing director of Sailun Tyres) commented: “ITMA is recognised as one of the leading body of International tyre manufacturers and plays a pivotal role in representing our interests at all levels. Sailun Tyres recognise the benefits of joining such a group and are delighted to be able to host this meeting.”

TWG sees Continuation of 2010 Trends into 2011

Yesterday saw the Tyre Wholesalers Group Annual Lunch held at the National Motorcycle Museum in Solihull. At the event, TWG chair Ashley Croft reviewed the year in UK tyre wholesaling, saying that “TWG members are fortunate within the replacement side of our market to have enjoyed a year of consistent market size, although the busy first half of the year has been balanced by a quieter period following.” Croft also looked forward to 2011, in which he forecasted “a year of challenges” for TWG members, commented on the rising interest in winter – or cold weather – tyres in the UK and the long-term potential effects of a consistent, large seasonal market; the persistently low availability of product throughout the year; his concerns about tyre labelling; and the education of non-NTDA member retailers. Empowerment Management: T&A talks to New Goodyear Dunlop UK MD

When Goodyear Dunlop Tires Europe said it had appointed George Rietbergen as managing director UK and Ireland in March, the announcement meant the Dutchman would become the operation’s third managing director since 2004. During that time significant changes have taken place in the company’s UK and Eire operations including the separation of HiQ in a hard franchised passenger car only retail operation and a Truck Force network; the adoption of multi-brand and multi-company distribution strategy via outsourced third party logistics (namely Norbert Dentressangle) and a significant number and scope of personnel changes. Set against this backdrop you could be forgiven for expecting more upheaval, but as Tyres & Accessories recently found out in an exclusive interview with the new MD, he brings with him a refreshingly up-front Hollandic approach and an understated management style that puts the emphasis on the departmental heads and middle managers rather than “the man at the top.”
