Goodyear launches low platform trailer tyre in 2 sizes

Goodyear has announced a new range of low platform trailer tyres for applications such as car transporters in both long and regional haul service and also for heavy haulage trailers. The Regional RHT II 19.5” and 17.5” have been developed to provide increased operational mileage and improved wet grip. Goodyear says the low rolling resistence tyres meet the requirements of the future EU Regulation 661/2009. The Goodyear Regional RHT II is fully regroovable and retreadable.

Retailer ordered to pay £7000 for selling 16-year-old tyre

The proprietor of a Bristol tyre business has been ordered to pay £7000 after he sold a 16-year-old product to a consumer. According to Bristol City Council, Philip Church sold and fitted the tyre to a customer's vehicle while trading as C and C Tyres. And what’s more not only was the tyre so far past it sell by date that had it have been human it was nearly old enough to drive itself, he also failed to point out that it was second hand.

Goodyear Dunlop explains road safety benefits of tyre labelling

Goodyear Dunlop hosted an event at its Innovation Centre in Luxembourg, showing the road safety benefits that it believes the European tyre labelling legislation will have when it is introduced on 1 November 2012. 140 guests from over 25 European countries attended Road Safety Days, during which Goodyear argued that the 7.5x11cm label could help reduce stopping distances of vehicles on wet roads by “up to four car lengths”, in addition to reducing fuel consumption “by 7.5 per cent and lessen CO2 emissions.” During her presentation Lie Junius, the company’s EMEA director of public affairs, hinted that the “game-changing” labels could be introduced early in a “six-month transaction period… depending on the [EU] legislature.” A full report will be published in Tyres & Accessories’ December issue.

Car fleets unaware of forthcoming tyre labelling laws

With preparations for the implementation of next year’s tyre labelling laws still very much beginning within the industry, how ready are those in one rung down on the supply ladder in the fleet business? If the latest research is anything to go by, they are some way off the pace for November 2012 implementation of the European rules, with varying levels of understanding of what tyre labels mean. In fact a recent Fleet News survey sponsored by Michelin found that over two-thirds (69%) of the 281 fleet operators who responded are unaware of the forthcoming EU tyre labelling regulations. So will the labelling law make any difference to fleet tyre purchasing?

Tyrepress.com poll: Consumers will pay more for fuel efficiency

The tyre trade has suggested that, while there is still plenty of scepticism over the commercial draw of fuel efficient tyres, consumers will pay more for a tyre that increases fuel efficiency. Westlake Tyres signs exclusivity deal with Direct Tyre Management

Westlake Tyres has announced that it has appointed Direct Tyre Sales as sole distributor of its truck tyre range in the UK. Direct Tyre Management (DTM). In order to supply the British market, DTM will promote Westlake’s TBR brand through its own “team of regional sales staff” where it will “complement” its own “retread brand”. DTM plan to distribute all Westlake TBR products destined for the UK from their Wigan Retread Factory in Lancashire. Sales of circa 90,000 Westlake TBR units over the next three years are expected.

Tyresafe chairman makes One Show appearance marking Tyre safety month

Tyresafe chairman Stuart Jackson made an appearance during the opening segment on tyre safety of BBC One’s flagship early-evening magazine programme, The One Show. The five-minute report highlighted the increase in stopping distances when using tyres with insufficient tread depth. One startled motorist, who had been found by the show’s production team to be driving on illegal tyres, was then shown how to check their tyre tread depth using TyreSafe’s 20p test, which was repeated later in the studio. Tyresafe should be congratulated for the positive effect this coverage will undoubtedly have, though Simon Boseman, who presented the item, incorrectly stated that the legal tread depth limit is 3mm rather than 1.6mm, and then administered the 20p test on only the shoulder of the tyre, when two-thirds of the cross-section of the tread must be above the limit.

Licence to fit, ProMOTe and winter tyres all figure in 2011 NTDA chairman’s speech

After announcing the winners of this year’s TAFF awards, the NTDA’s David White used his annual chairman’s speech – which has become a bit of a “state of the union”-esque moment for the UK business – to announce the news that the association has decided to make its REACT licence to fit qualification mandatory for members. According to the chairman, this decision was agreed in the association board meeting that preceded the evening dinner. However reporting always sits better in context, so here is an edited version of the complete speech for those that couldn’t make the event in person:

HiQ calls TAFF Retailer win its “biggest success” of 2011

Plymouth HiQ franchisee Pilgrim Tyres Ltd claimed the inaugural Tyre Retailer of the Year TAFF Award at this year’s ceremony last week; an achievement the fast fit network is calling its “biggest success story of 2011”. The victory was the result of its performance in an assessment programme including a 30-point mystery telephone call, and a clandestine branch visit designed to observe how the branch operates in real-life conditions. The award was supported by Encircle Marketing. HiQ Plymouth’s franchisee Bob Saunders said: “I am absolutely over the moon. I am delighted to win this award and it is with great thanks to the team I have around me.

ETRMA: Non REACH compliant tyres still entering Europe

On 16 October ETRMA (European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers' Association) announced the results of its second round of tyre testing examining REACH compliance of tyres found within Europe. ETRMA’s results show that roughly 10 per cent of the sample failed to comply with the clean oil legislation, around the same proportion as failed the last set of tests held earlier this year. However while ETRMA raised concerns about both compliance and enforcement of REACH regulations, some of the companies named in the report have already responded to accusations of compliance failure by raising questions of their own about the way in which the sample was selected.

ETRMA’s second testing campaign was carried out between April and September 2011 on a sample of 94 tyres available for sale to EU consumers in several of the largest national tyre markets. These tyres were all produced in late 2010 and 2011 in 50 factories located in 11 countries, and are being sold in the EU under 51 brand names (these include 31 brands not tested in the first round). The first round of tyre compliance tests the ETRMA conducted took place in March 2011 and followed a similar approach.

Universal Tyres & Spares attend Radar charity event in UK

Following up the May launch of the Singapore tyre brand Radar’s “Mobilizing Hope” breast cancer campaign, its UK distributor joined dealers, president of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation Myra Biblowit and top breast cancer research doctors at an exclusive gallery showing of Evelyn Lauder’s photographs. Universal Tyres and Spares director Michael Jackson said: “The event was very enjoyable and it was great for us and the dealers to see how the money raised is being used in research and development, the doctors explained the progress they are making and improving communication and preventing Breast Cancer before it’s too late.“ The event was hosted by Elizabeth Hurley and Larry Gagosian, the gallery owner. Following the activities at the gallery the distributor, dealers and guests attended a dinner at Massimo restaurant where the chef patron Massimo Riccioli had created a fantastic “anti-cancer” menu.

ITMA offers help with tyre labelling compliance

Described by some as one of the biggest changes to affect the tyre industry in recent years, much ballyhooed new tyre labelling regulations for car and truck tyres will come into force from 1 November 2012. The regulations are designed to provide consumers with information on the tyre’s fuel efficiency, wet grip and external rolling noise so they are able to make a more informed choice when selecting new tyres. but they also mean that manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers alike would do to get their houses in order well in advance of the deadline.

Report: 2010’s new car sales helped repair puncture in tyre market

Higher new vehicle registrations in 2010 helped to repair a price deflation puncture in the UK tyre and tube market in 2009. According to a new report published by Key Note, the tough economic conditions in 2009 resulted in the UK market value for tyres and tubes deflating by 8.4 per cent at manufacturers’ selling prices (msp). Their view is that a boost in new vehicle registrations in 2010 and inflationary price increases helped the apparent market undo this, growing by 12.6 per cent in 2010.

Lanxess “ready” for growth in rubber demand

At its most recent “Rubber Day”, held today in Germany, specialty chemicals company Lanxess reported it expects – and is well equipped for – a labelling-related boost in demand for high performance rubber. Speaking at the event, company Board of Management chairman Axel C. Heitmann said “in order to meet the new legislation and the expected customer demand, our high-tech materials are essential. As the world’s largest partner for the tyre industry, we have adapted to the trend on time. We have made the right strategic investment decisions and have strengthened our capacities.”
