Kirkby Tyres continues price-conscious exclusive brand strategy

Liverpool-based wholesaler Kirkby Tyres & Wheels has expanded to become one of the biggest – if not the biggest – wholesalers of agricultural tyres and wheels in the UK and Ireland during its 60-plus year history. The distributor now boasts a range of more than 6,000 different product lines, with sole distributorship deals on Alliance, Double Coin, Longmarch, Malhotra and Sailun brands within certain segments. It was also appointed as the wholesale distributor for Trelleborg’s premium agricultural tyre products, alongside Trelleborg Wheel Systems’ direct tyre dealer network.

Kirkby announces new Alliance, BKT agricultural tyre sizes

Kirkby Tyres has announced the availability of a number of new agricultural tyre sizes. Indian manufacturer BKT is supplying eight new fitments of tractor and trailer tyres to the Liverpool based wholesaler, while Kirkby UK exclusive brand Alliance has three new sizes of its 320 Value Plus tyre for small trailers, balers and agricultural tillage implements.

Sailun develops European tyre lines as Asian acquisitions continue

April reports of the Sailun Group’s move to raise capital of “up to 1.2 billion yuan” (c. £114 million) through the private placement of shares is just the latest positive step in the development of a name still in its adolescence. While the merger with Jinyu in 2012, only its tenth year in existence, placed the company alongside larger manufacturers in China, overseas developments have followed, with a large factory in Vietnam online since February. Developing a European base has also come quickly, with Sailun establishing an office headed by managing director Martin West in Solihull by 2010, who has worked quickly to build partnerships with local wholesalers in the various European markets. Meeting West in Solihull, Tyres & Accessories asked how corporate growth has informed Sailun’s approach to the European market.

Kirkby increases Sailun exposure with CV Show stand

Kirkby Tyres’ Commercial Vehicle Show stand gave over a large proportion of its Hall Five space to displaying Sailun Tyres’ 16-strong range of TBR tyres. One of major UK distributors of truck, agricultural, plant and quad tyres, Kirkby are the sole distributor of Sailun truck tyres in the UK and Ireland. The distributor was pleased with the number of enquiries about the range, and went as far as to say that it was “our best ever.”

Kirkby Tyres Expands Virtual Warehouse to Irish Market

Kirkby Tyres has appointed Cam Systems to implement a fully integrated online virtual warehouse using MIDaS enabling its customers in Ireland to view available stock, check prices and place orders online. The appointment follows the successful integration of Cam systems’ MIDaS platform into Kirkby’s UK warehouse in Speke, Merseyside, which has resulted in a significant increase in sales. MIDaS, Cam's online ordering framework for tyre wholesalers, now manages transactions valued at over £170 million per annum, across its client base – a figure which is reportedly growing exponentially.

Alliance Expands Product Range with New Flotation Tyres

Agricultural tyre specialist Alliance has complemented its range of radial flotation tyres with a number of new sizes. The manufacturer has a long tradition in the development and manufacture of flotation tyres for agricultural use; in 1998 the Israeli-Indian company became the world’s first manufacturer to produce this type of radial. Liverpool based Kirkby Tyres & Wheels, the exclusive distributor of Double Coin tyres in the UK and Ireland, reports that the company’s crane tyres are becoming an increasingly popular item. This popularity can be seen by the decision made by Davies Crane Hire Limited to fit Double Coin brand tyres as its preferred brand, effective immediately.

Kirby’s national accounts director, Simon Michael, believes this decision in favour of Double Coin to be a significant step forward for the brand in the highly competitive crane industry, and reports that the South Wales crane hire firm will be supplied and services by Carmarthenshire Tyre Services Limited.

Kirkby Makes New Sales Appointments

Kirkby Tyres & Wheels recently announced the appointment of a national accounts director and a new addition to the sales team. According to the company the appointments further strengthen the company’s ongoing momentum as a dedicated one-stop-shop for all sectors of the industry.

Simon Michael becomes National Accounts Director and joins Kirkby from Cooper Tyres (UK) whom he joined back in 1995 as a Regional Sales Manager (when they were Avon Tyres). During the past 13 years Simon steadily progressed to the position of Senior National Account Manager and now looks forward to the new challenges ahead of him.

Double Coin Tyres ‘Have Plenty More Potential’

In the last year, Kirkby Tyres & Wheels has experienced a near 20 per cent increase in truck tyre sales. Speaking to managing director, Dave Dorrity, Tyres & Accessories learnt that the company’s Chinese-produced Double Coin truck products are at the forefront of company growth, with fleet deals, OE business and increased tyre and wheel assembly business all either underway or on the horizon.

In fact business is going so well that Kirkby recently took the step of extending its own office in China, with an extra two mother tongue Chinese speaking employees committed to securing continuous stock levels and obtaining new product lines. Currently the company brings in six containers a day (across all product lines), with business growth reported in every sector.

While the majority of Kirkby’s truck tyre sales are in the replacement market, the company is also involved in various OE and fleet operations. These centre on Kirkby’s growing tyre and wheel assembly business which sees the company supply complete tyre/wheel packages to various trailer-makers. “The OE side of the business has really been customer led,” Dave Dorrity explained.

Alliance Strengthen Forestry Position

Alliance has introduced 40 new forestry tyre designs to its existing ranges in an attempt to strengthen its position in the segment. The tyres feature reinforced steel and include flotation forestry tyres for harvesters, agro-forestry R1 tyres for combined applications in forestry and agriculture, and LS forestry tyres for logger skidders.

The new tyres were developed in co-operation with machinery manufacturers, under severe conditions, said David Shahar, head of R&D for Alliance. “Forestry tyres should be able to drive effortlessly in difficult terrain, without puncture and costly down time,” Shahar explained.
