Pirelli packs hard compound tyres for Japanese GP

Following the use of the two softest Pirelli Formula One tyres on Singapore’s Marina Bay street circuit, teams will work with the two hardest compounds – the P Zero Orange hard and P Zero White medium – at this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix. The firmer compounds are considered a better match to the Suzuka circuit’s fast and demanding corners due to their ability to better cope with the heat build-up that results from the extremely high energy loads passing through the tyres.

Bridgestone opens ‘Global Disaster Prevention Center’

Bridgestone Corporation has established a new facility in order to better educate its employees on disasters and how to prevent them. The Global Disaster Prevention Center is located within the Bridgestone G-MEC Building in Tokyo, Japan, and Bridgestone is using it to conduct training to prepare for fire-related emergencies. The centre will be further expanded early in the next fiscal year to include training on natural disasters, and will draw upon lessons learned in Japan’s earthquake of 2011

Solid Auto UK renews Groupauto supply agreement

Solid Auto UK has renewed its supply agreement with Groupauto, marking a 10 year partnership for the Japanese and Korean specialist and buying group. The agreement covers all product groups including filters, brake pads and discs, clutches, cooling, steering and suspension, engine components and electrical. Groupauto members will also have access to the company’s new ranges of ABS Sensors and EGR Valves.

Yokohama record first half sales and operating income

The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd. January to June 2015 financial results were the highest first-half results in the firm’s history. Net sales increased 4.4 per cent, to 296.3 billion yen (£1.522 billion; 2.146 billion euros; US$2.374 billion); operating income increased 7.3 per cent, to 25.3 billion yen (£129.966 million; 183.141 million euros; $202.702 million); and net income declined 9.6 per cent, to 16.2 billion yen (£82.253 million; 117.255 million euros; $129.668 million).

Heads roll at Toyo in light of earthquake dampner scandal

On 23 June Toyo Tire & Rubber Co., Ltd. chairman Akira Nobuki resigned and executive corporate officer Tetsuya Kuze was demoted in order to take responsibility for Toyo Chemical Industrial Products Co., Ltd.’s sale of non-compliant seismic isolation rubber products. Four more executives announced their retirement. All the personnel changes take effect from 1 July 2015.

Bridgestone reports 49% increase in net income, misses analyst targets

Yokohama-shod cars win in five Japanese Rally classes

Yokohama-equipped cars won the series championships in five of six classes of the Japanese Rally Championship, the nation’s premier rally car competition. Yokohama-shod cars won the championships in the JN1, JN2, JN4, JN5 and JN6 classes. The performance of the victorious cars was firmly based on the superior performance on gravel of Yokohama’s “Advan A053” rally tyres as well as the excellent stability of the “Advan A050” sports tyre on tarmac courses.

SRI meets 50% less rolling resistance goal with latest Enasave tyre

This month, Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI) has launched a new flagship product for its Enasave series of fuel efficient tyres, albeit only in the Japanese market. The Dunlop-brand Enasave Next has been introduced in size 195/65R15 91H and has achieved the coveted ‘AAA-a’ rank under the Japanese tyre label, the highest rating possible for rolling resistance and wet grip. SRI says the new tyre has 50 per cent lower rolling resistance than the standard Japanese replacement market Dunlop tyre in 2008, the year it set out to achieve this goal.

F1 Japan, Russia compounds announced

Pirelli has announced the compounds it will make available for the forthcoming grands prix in Japan and Russia. The exclusive tyre supplier said it would announce its final three 2014 allocations after its visit to Sochi, Russia, a brand new circuit for which Pirelli has relied on simulation data in making its compound allocation choice.

No renewal of China’s rubber anti-dumping duties

Eleven years of Chinese government anti-dumping duties on imports of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) from Russia, Japan and South Korea ended on 8 September, the country’s Ministry of Commerce reports. The products had attracted duties of four to 38 per cent, however the ministry decided to remove them as these imports were deemed no longer a threat to China’s domestic tyre and rubber industry.

Top Bridgestone managers take on Olympics roles

Bridgestone has announced the appointment of several senior executives to a new organisation called the BIOC – the Bridgestone International Organizing Committee. Bridgestone CEO and board chairman Maasaki Tsuya has been named BIOC chairman, effective 1 September. Tsuya will be supported in this position by COO and Japan business head Kazuhisa Nishigai, who will become vice-chairman of the BIOC, and Yuichiro Takenami, who will be BIOC secretary general.

US Justice Department indicts current, former Bridgestone executives

The US Justice Department indicted one Bridgestone Corporation executive and two former officials for conspiring to fix the prices of certain automotive parts, reports Tire Review. Bridgestone itself agreed in February to plead guilty to price-fixing, paying a $425 million criminal fine. The case involves anti-vibration parts used in automotive suspension systems and engine mounts.
