Half-Year Profits Down at Beru

Germany’s Beru Group have posted sales revenue of 230.4 million euros in the first half of 2008, a 2.77 per cent growth on the corresponding period of 2007. The main sources of revenue, the company reports, were the Aftermarket segment and the Electronics and Sensors division. Profit from ordinary activities (EBIT) reduced 35.2 per cent due to one-time special items and amounted to 15.8 million euros. Excluding the special items, adjusted EBIT amounted to 23.1 million euros, equivalent to an adjusted margin of 10.0 per cent. Beru’s profit of 12.3 million euros during the period was also lower than in the first half of 2007, when profits of 18.5 million euros were achieved.

Pirelli Factory a Potential Terrorist Target?

A report published by Italy’s La Stampa newspaper on August 12 suggests a possibility that Pirelli’s tyre manufacturing plant in Turin may be a planned target for terrorists. An anti-terror investigation has begun in Italy after police discovered detailed architectural plans for the Turin factory. While the report does not make clear where the plans were found, reference is made to an “encampment” inside a highway tunnel that is used by local homeless people.

Organisers Expecting More Visitors for CITExpo 2008

Show organisers are expecting more visitors than ever when nearly 300 exhibitors present their tyre products at the 6th CITExpo, held at the Shanghai Everbright Convention and Exhibition Center on 17, 18 and 19 September 2008. Technology on show will include radial tyres, bias tyres, wheels/rims, tyre maintenance equipments, retread materials and equipments, tyre production material and equipment and other related products. According to CITExpo organisers, Reliable International Exhibition Services Co., Ltd., the two original exhibition halls have already been fully occupied by new and rebooking exhibitors, causing them to add Hall 1A to exhibition space.

Looking ahead, Reliable announced that the 7th CITExpo will be held in the same venue on 9, 10 and 11 September 2009. According to the organizer, they have already received more than 15 exhibitors’ bookings for the 2009 show. Those early bookings have committed a year in advance in order secure the best booth location for the future CITExpo show, the organisers explained.

Deldo Gearing Up for Winter with New Catalogue

Deldo Autobanden is a European specialist in winter tyres. For many years the company has focused on this fast growing market and now offers over 25 brands in Car, Van, 4×4 and SUV tyres. More Guilty Pleas in Marine Hose Price Fixing Case

A Milan, Italy-based marine hose manufacturer and the former president of its former US subsidiary have agreed to plead guilty and pay more than US$2 million in criminal fines for participating in a global price fixing conspiracy. The former subsidiary president had also agreed to serve time in prison. Furthermore, an Italian executive of another marine hose manufacturer located in Veniano, Italy has also agreed to plead guilty for participating in the same conspiracy.

A one-count felony charge was filed today in US District Court in West Palm Beach, Florida against Manuli Rubber Industries SpA (Manuli) and Robert L. Furness, the former president of Manuli’s former Florida based subsidiary. Under the terms of the plea agreements, which are subject to court approval, Manuli has agreed to pay a criminal fine of $2 million, and Furness has agreed to serve 14 months in prison and pay a $75,000 criminal fine. Both Manuli and Furness have also agreed to cooperate fully in the Department’s ongoing antitrust investigation. Manuli is the first corporation to be charged in the investigation.

Solideal International has released a new line of rubber tracks under the Raptor brand name. Raptor rubber tracks have been developed in 33 different sizes to fit the most popular mini excavator machines and are reportedly intended to offer “good value for money for price sensitive customers.” Raptor brand will be available in North America as well as in many European countries including: the Baltics, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, UK, Romania and Serbia. Pirelli President Not a Spy, Concludes Probe

A probe into spying allegations in Italy, in which 20 were arrested on suspicion of revealing confidential phone records, has exonerated Pirelli’s president, Marco Tronchetti Provera, from any wrongdoing. Tronchetti Provera had been chairman at Telecom Italia, the organisation which held the records in question, when Pirelli had a controlling stake in the telecommunications operation.

Following the probe’s conclusions, Pirelli and Telecom Italia have stated separately that they are in fact the injured parties. Tronchetti Prevera himself has apologised for the actions of the company under his stewardship, say Italian news sources, calling the spying activities the work of a small minority of “bad eggs”. The probe is continuing to investigate, and will bring proceedings against any party conforming to this malodorous elliptical description.

Michelin Signs 3-Year A1GP Tyre Contract

Michelin is the new exclusive tyre partner to A1GP World Cup of Motorsport, starting with the 2008/09 season. The French manufacturer has signed a three-year contract and replaces Cooper Tire, which had produced A1GP’s control tyres since the series’ inception in 2005.

In a statement announcing the news, A1GP said Michelin tyre technicians had been working hard on the new project. A1GP’s new “Powered by Ferrari” car has reportedly clocked up over 4,000 kilometres on tracks in Italy and Spain on Michelin tyres since its first run in Fiorano in late May.

Bridgestone Increases UHP Tyre Production in France

Bridgestone Europe has invested 32 million euros in increasing production capacity at its Béthune, France, passenger-car tyre plant. According to the company, the investment will extend the plant high performance tyre production output by up to 1000 tyres a day from 2009. The Bridgestone Béthune plant currently produces around 25,000 passenger-car tyres a day and employs more than 1,250 people. Bridgestone Europe operates seven manufacturing plants (in France, Spain, Italy, Poland and Hungary), producing both passenger car and truck and bus tyres. The new production facilities will manufacture Bridgestone’s latest generation passenger-car tyres including ultra high-performance tyres and winter tyres.

Reifen Review 2008: Wellrock Introduce MGT Machinery

Wellrock Italia of Treviso, Italy is a joint venture between the well known OTR retreader Gomme Piave and Pneusmarca. Whereas Gomme Piave focuses on OTR tyres up to 35″, the Wellrock facility, located adjacent to Gomme Piave’s plant, specialises in giant tyres for the mining sector. The plant features newly-introduced tyre manufacturing machinery from MGT, an installation that Lucio Trevisan, Wellrock’s Sales Manager says has speeded up production substantially.

Wellrock’s visit to Reifen 2008 was dedicated to spreading awareness of the brand and its products, which include both retreads – in which the company specialises – and all new radial OTR tyres. The products are produced at the twin plants in Villorba, with the Gomme Piave retreads between 20” and 35” hot cured and moulded and the Wellrock retreads from 35” to a whopping 63” hot cured with cut treads.

With an increasing number of distributors joining the Infinity partners scheme, the brand is reportedly gaining “steady momentum” in the competitive price passenger car and truck sectors. According to company representatives, partners have been appointed in 25 countries across Europe during the past 12 months.

Pirelli Confirms Higher Targets Despite Weakening Car Sales

Comments given by Pirelli & C Spa chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera indicate that targets for company’s tyre business remain slightly higher despite declining car sales in Western Europe. Speaking to reporters on June 30, Mr. Tronchetti Provera said Pirelli is “working on growing where there is a sustained demand, to improve the profit mix and to reduce costs. Therefore we believe we can meet our targets.”

According to the organiser of CITEXPO, Reliable International Exhibition Services Co., the two original exhibition halls have already been fully occupied by new and rebooking exhibitors at this early stage. In order to fulfill the overwhelming demand by the exhibitors, a new hall has been opened for accommodating more exhibitors and their products.
