Pirelli ‘Satisfied’ With F1 Tyre Performance in First Test

Two days of Formula One tyre testing concluded on August 18, and Pirelli discloses the purpose of this first test was to begin the process of determining the front and rear tyre profile and construction that will be used as the basis of its new PZero Formula One tyre. Driver Nick Heidfeld spent the two days behind the wheel of a Toyota TF109 in predominately dry and sunny conditions at the Mugello circuit in Italy. Fitted to the Toyota F1 car were sample prototype versions of the new PZero.

Hankook Eyes Premier League Football Deal, Extends European Sponsorship

While Hankook discloses the medium term aim of widening its football sponsorship strategy to include England’s Premier League and Italy’s A Series, it is currently furthering its commitments through new deals in Germany and Spain. In addition to extending its relationship with six times German league champion Borussia Dortmund, in the 2010/2011 season the tyre maker will also display advertisements at the home stadiums of four federal league teams: Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Eintracht Frankfurt, VfB Stuttgart and VfL Wolfsburg.

Italian Tyre Business Website, Newsletter Launched

As of the beginning of this week tyrepress.com has a new partner website delivering the latest tyre business news in Italian, PneusNews.it. Olympic Skier Harvests European Tractor Record

Sometimes you just have to do something to prove it can indeed be done. Olympic medallist Giorgio Di Centa may have had this thought in mind as he steered his tractor, a Same Silver3 110, up to a height of 3,175 metres at the Pirovano ski hut in Italy’s Stelvio Pass. Di Centa achieved this unusual goal using CGS manufactured Continental AC70 T agricultural tyres fitted with König snow chains. Upon his arrival, he could warm himself with the thought that he had driven a tractor higher than anyone else in Europe, a feat attested to by the Italian Timekeepers Association (Federazione Italiana Cronometristi). On his way to this dizzying height, Di Centa encountered terrain that varied between paved road, stone and ice.

BIPAVER Appoints New President, Presidium

At its annual general assembly in June, members of the European retreading association BIPAVER elected a new presidium. Taking over the reins as president is former vice-president Jan Driessen, from VACO in the Netherlands. Former president, Italy’s Brenno Benaglia (AIRP) now serves in the capacity of vice-president, and Portugal’s José Silva Gomes, from the ANIRP, has been appointed second vice-president. The BIPAVER offices remain, as before, in the premises of the Dutch tyre organisation VACO.

Ecclestone: F1 Needs Faster Wearing Tyres

Bernie Ecclestone believes faster wearing tyres will make for more exciting racing in Formula One. According to Tire Review, Ecclestone told Italy’s Gazzetta dello Sport he thinks F1 tyres should last no more than 100 kilometres, forcing teams into at least two pit stops. “People want more overtaking," Ecclestone states. “I have a proposal: tyre sets that can be used for a maximum of 100 kilometres, with the one used in qualifying to be used in the first part of the race. This way we'd have more tyre changes at different times and there would be more confusion. The best races are the messy ones.” Ecclestone made no mention that fuel stops have been eliminated from F1 races, removing as many as two pit stops per race.

Pirelli Hosts China Football League Medical Exchange

Football sponsorship, as was witnessed during the World Cup, can give a tyre maker extensive exposure and media coverage. Pirelli is one of a number of firms that has decided to lend its support to the beautiful game, and the Italian company sponsors teams or associations in Italy, Switzerland, South America and China. Its involvement in the last of these regions is through a three-year title sponsorship agreement to Chinese Super League (CSL) – now known as Pirelli’s China Super League – which began in 2009. Recently, to boost the CSL medical team’s competencies in the area of sports injury treatment and rehabilitation, Pirelli arranged for doctors from 16 CSL teams travelled to Italy for a week-long exchange tour.

Atturo Tire Targets Affordable SUV Market

Occupying a booth in Hall 2, Atturo Tire’s Michael Mathis was enthusiastic about the opportunity provided by Reifen to make contact with the company’s European dealers (Micheldever in the UK), while also gaining new distributors. Mathis mentioned Spain, Italy, Eastern Europe and the Middle East as the territories from which much of the traffic for the stand came. Though the company had expected “a higher quantity of visitors,” said Mathis, “the quality of the traffic has been good. In a month from now, I think we will be pretty satisfied,” he concluded.

Pirelli Partners for Summer Safety

Italian drivers have earned themselves something of a reputation for not being Europe’s meekest motorists, so news of Pirelli’s co-presentation of a summer road safety campaign is very welcome indeed. On June 16 the tyre maker, in collaboration with ‘Autostrade per l’Italia’ and Telepass (the company that builds and manages Italy’s motorways and its electronic toll collection system), presented the “Safe&Go” summer road safety campaign, to be operated under the patronage of the Italy’s minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Altero Matteoli. The minister attended the launch along with Pirelli Group chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera, together with Giovanni Castellucci and Fabio Cerchiai, respectively the managing director and president ‘Autostrade per l’Italia’.

New Dealers Added to Bandag’s European Network

Bandag has added new dealers in Italy and Latvia to its European network. La Rinnova Del Pneumatico – Arké s.r.l, of Podenzano, Italy, and Juva SIA of Riga, Latvia, have both signed Bandag franchise contracts, bringing the total number of Bandag dealers in Europe to more than 140.

MAI Names Maylas/Yaşar Oto Lastik Dealer of the Year

Turkish company Maylas/Yaşar Oto Lastik Sanayi Ve Ticaret Ltd. Şti was recently named "Dealer of the Year" by Italy-based tyre manufacturer MAI OTR Tyres. The award was presented during the Reifen exhibition at Essen by Federico Fiorini, general manager of MAI International.

"I am pleased to name Maylas/Yaşar Oto Lastik as the recipient of our 2009 MAI OTR Dealer award. It is richly deserved, as this dealership has routinely earned the respect and gratitude of its customers across all aspects of its business, and in doing so, has exceeded our very high demands and standards,” Federico Fiorini commented.

Federal Supplying UK’s Ma5da MX5 Cup

The new Ma5da MX5 Cup started on 24 April at Snetterton and continues at Rockingham, Brands Hatch and Croft during the season, with a “Winter Championship to take place at Donnington and Brands Hatch in October and November – and Taiwanese manufacturer Federal has announced that it will supply its 595 RS-R sport competition line as the official tyre of the new series throughout the year.

Chinese Auto Parts is World’s Most Profitable Vehicle Industry

The automotive parts industry in China has reportedly become the world’s most profit making industry of its kind. According to a survey report produced by AlixPartners, the profits of auto parts enterprises in China topped its counterparts in 2009. Average profit levels were 8 – 10 per cent, which is apparently double the global average. In 2009, the revenue of auto parts enterprises in China is said to have reached 1,140 billion yuan, an increase of 23 per cent over 2008. However, supplier sales are said to ahve lagged behind the OEM growth because of a higher decline in exports. Several major domestic auto-parts suppliers are emerging as winners, with companies entering the top 100 global suppliers by revenue.

However, says the study, in order to maintain their profitability, suppliers need to effectively manage rising cost pressures, upgrade their technology, build their aftermarket capabilities and, significantly, find ways to recruit and retain qualified people in what has become a very competitive labour market.

Forging a Path Into Europe

Leading commercial vehicle wheel business Motor Wheel Service Distribution recently invested £500,000 in UK and European infrastructure in preparation for the “official launch” of its xlite range of forged aluminium commercial vehicle wheels. xlite wheels were “soft launched” some time ago, with Tyres & Accessories previewing the initial release back in April 2005. Since then the product range, branding, infrastructure and strategy have all evolved from what was initially a low level market trial into a Europe wide sales and distribution operation prepared to operate on the scale of the largest players in the business.

With over 80 years experience in the wheel business, Motor Wheel Service started out specialising in passenger car products, especially wire wheels. This business continues to this day, running out of the Motor Wheel Services International operation in Berkshire and company representatives still claim the ability to resurrect virtually any wire wheel back to its former glory. But now this wing operates as a distributor for the main part of the company’s business – Motor Wheel Service Distribution based in Manchester, which has been supplying commercial vehicle wheels for over 20 years.
