Gomme Piave and SD Meccanica collaborate with a new development

Just recently Italian firm Gomme Piave, which specialises in the retreading of OTR tyres, celebrated its 50th anniversary. And despite the uncertainties the industry has faced during this time the company maintains its dedication towards innovation. “When retreading first emerged in the 1950s Italy developed into one of the leading countries in this sector, and this tradition remains strong to this day,“ shares Giomme Piave’s owner Augusto Favaro. “There is no other country in Europe that can boast having these specialised competencies to such an extent.”

Hankook names Northern Italy logistics provider

A three-year agreement covering Northern Italy has been signed between Hankook Tire Italy and CEVA Logistics. Under the terms of the deal, CEVA manage the storage, distribution and reverse logistics for Hankook’s tyres at its facility in Somaglia, near Lodi in Italy. A dedicated 6,000 square metre area will be reserved for the tyre maker within the Somaglia site, and from there CEVA will use to incoming and several outgoing vehicles each day to distribute car, light commercial vehicle and truck tyres across northern Italy and will also manage a shuttle service to Hankook Tire’s main warehouse in Rome, which serves the central and southern areas of Italy. Over the course of a year CEVA estimates it will handle 500,000 tyres across 400 product lines.

Car sales in Europe decline

Europe's new car sales decline by 9.5 per cent in February, and 8.1per cent Year-to-Date compared to last year. According to the latest analysis from leading provider of automotive intelligence JATO Dynamics, the European new car market continues to suffer, as economic uncertainty kept customers out of showrooms in February.

Infinity to supply tyres to British drift team

Infinity Tyres has secured a partnership with Acorn Motorsport Division (AMD) for the Maxxis British Drift Championship (BDC) season. 2012 marks the event’s fifth year, which this time starts on Saturday 21 April at the Teesside Autodrome. Championship are already said to be at record levels, with drivers from all over Europe – including France, Sweden, The Netherlands, Italy, Portugal, Belgium and Ireland – registering their intention to take part.

Winter testing at new Bridgestone proving ground

With the increasing use of cold weather tyres across many European markets as a result of legislation, recent harsh winters, and increased product awareness, the development cycle for new models has reduced in length. The world’s biggest manufacturer, Bridgestone has responded to the increased interest in the segment – and the resultant quickening of technological improvements – by signing a long-term lease on its new Sweden Proving Ground (SPG), located in Vidsel in the north of the country under 100km from the polar circle, and an hour’s drive north of Lulea airport. Its representatives told tyrepress.com that the estimated new seasonal product cycle would now be “no more than two winters”, since the “life cycle of a winter tyre is getting shorter”.

BKT Europe announces new MD, Italian distributor

Off-road tyre specialist BKT has reported two important new developments in its European operation since the start of this year. The first of these is the appointment of Lucia Salmaso, who as marketing director has directed strategic marketing and communication activities at BKT Europe srl since the start of 2009 and helped to establish the European subsidiary’s headquarters in Seregno, near Milan, Italy, as managing director of BKT Europe.

CDP Group discusses counter-trend strategies in Italian wholesale market

CDP Group’s CEO Andrea Reggi calls 2011 "a year of consolidation", which ended with success. While the turnover remained constant at about 38 million euros, net profit came in at more than 2 million euros, an improvement of 15 per cent over the previous year and a percentage of profit on turnover of more than 5 per cent. Reggi hit the targets he stated in an interview with PneusNews.it last year: to strengthen the company’s financial position, increasing the return but not the turnover. "In 2011 I wanted to understand if the 38 million euros in revenue, achieved in just three years, was a temporary episode due to specific factors such as winter 2010," said Reggi.

Apollo to unveil Aspire 4G in Geneva

At next week’s Auto Salon in Geneva, Apollo Tyres is unveiling its latest UHP summer passenger car tyre. Known as the Aspire 4G, the new range will be available in W and Y speed ratings. Further details will be available following the tyre’s official launch on 7 March.

Harmonic names Italmatic as preferred supplier

Harmonic Energy Inc. has identified Italmatic as the preferred tyre manufacturing equipment supplier for all of its facilities. The company reports that it came to this decision after reviewing the top equipment suppliers for tyre manufacturing. Harmonic has identified Italmatic Tyre, which is based in Italy, as the premier choice for highest quality and safety for production of what it calls re-new automotive tyres.

7.1 per cent fall in EU car registrations

ACEA, the European Automoblie Manufacturers' Association, has published figures showing that, in January, demand for new cars dropped by 7.1 per cent in the EU, compared to the same month a year earlier. In total, 968,769 new registrations were recorded in the region, with on average one more working day than in January 2011. These figures exclude Malta, for which data was unavailable.

Westlake signs Spanish bus, truck tyre distribution deal

Westlake Tyres has signed a contract with Grupo Driver España, the tyre shop and automotive maintenance garage network, to sell and distribute its truck and bus tyres through its Spanish network. Eskay Tyres – part of the Al Dobowi Group and distributor of the brand in Spain – penned the deal, which will commence in February 2012. Grupo Driver España is 51 per cent owned by Pirelli, the remainder belongs to dealer partners. It announced the Westlake tyre deal during its Annual Partners Convention which this year was held in Seville. Miguel Delgado, Grupo Driver’s General Director, said that the deal struck with Westlake “is not exclusive and we will start receiving our first shipment of tyres in early February.”

Firestone launches medium tractor radial tyre

Firestone has launched a new agricultural tyre in its Performer range for medium-sized tractors. Firestone has announced the details of the Performer 65 at the 37th International Fair of Agricultural Machinery in Zaragoza, Spain. Firestone is exhibiting its range of agricultural tyres between 14 and 18 February.

Fleets to benefit from Pirelli’s Cyber Tyre technology

Pirelli has extended its Cyber Tyre technology to the commercial vehicle sector through the introduction of Cyber Fleet, an ‘intelligent’ tyre that uses an electronic sensor and computer system to provide drivers and fleet managers with up-to-the-minute data regarding the tyre’s condition and the vehicle’s geographical position. The new product was unveiled at the manufacturer’s recent Truck Safety Day in Italy.

Kumho awarded Auto GP supply contract

Kumho will be the sole tyre supplier to the international Auto GP series for 550bhp single-seat racing cars. In a change for the 2012 season, all Auto GP teams will be required to use two specifications of tyre per weekend, a parallel to the tyre regulation in Formula One. Kumho says the management of prime and option compounds will strengthen the series’ role as a “premier schooling grounds for Grand Prix drivers”. Auto GP will also include a KERS-style boost system giving drivers an extra 50bhp up to 10 times per race, and a mandatory pit stop for each race.

Hankook supplying two further touring championships

Starting in the 2012 season, Hankook Tire will serve as exclusive tyre supplier to two Italian-organised events, the Superstars International Series touring car championship and the GTSprint International Series grand touring championship. The company will provide tyres to both series within the framework of what it calls a “long-term partnership.” The tyres to be used in both championships are the Ventus F200 slick and the Z207 rain tyre.
