Italian launch for Kumho Flagship Store programme

Following the rollout of similar facilities in South Korea, the US, Australia and the UK, Kumho Tire opened its first ‘Kumho Flagship Store’ in Italy on 20 March. As in the other markets, the Italian flagship centre scheme aims to reward and help dealers who focus on the Kumho brand. The first facility, at the Pneus2000 centre in Offanengo, Cremona province, was selected from within the tyre maker’s Kumho Platinum Club network in Italy and will be followed in the near future by other centres in main cities throughout the country.

Pirelli/ChemChina deal, the story so far

On 22 March 2015 Pirelli was sold to ChemChina in a move that was both broadly expected and yet surprising at the same time. Expected inasmuch as Pirelli’s top management had been hinting at an exit for the last couple of years. Surprising due to the identity of the successful bidder and because of the speed at which the acquisition appears to have been agreed. But it was not a surprise who had been in high level talks with the Chinese for around three years. Here Tyres & Accessories compiles the latest details relating to the enormously influential story and considers what the impact will be on the company itself as well as the wider market place.

Pirelli truck tyre business to merge with Aeolus

Following the news that Pirelli is effectively being bought by ChemChina (the state-owned parent company of Chinese brands including Aeolus), further details – namely the implications of the transaction on the truck tyre sector – are continuing to emerge.

According to various news sources, it now looks likely that the Italian company’s truck tyre business will be merged with Aeolus Tyres (which is itself best-known for its commercial vehicle tyre products). Reuters made this claim by citing a statement from former Pirelli controlling shareholding company Camfin, which said Pirelli’s truck and industrial tyre business would be “folded into ChemChina’s listed unit Aeolus, allowing it to double its output”.

Autopromotec 2015 tyre space sold out

With Autopromotec 2015 kicking off in just a few months, the show’s organizers have confirmed that the space allocated for tyres and tyre equipment has already sold out. In addition the show, which will be held in Bologna, Italy from 20 – 24 May, is said to have witnessed a positive trend in terms of exhibitors and international trade delegations.

Vipal Rubber opens Italian sales office

Brazilian retreading and rubber product manufacturer Vipal Rubber has set up a sales office in Italy. The new office in Bologna opened in January 2015 and caters to a market that last year grew 13 per cent year-on-year. The decision to establish an office in Italy is not only in line with the company’s policy of remaining close to its customer base, rather it also reflects the strategy in place for developing the Vipal brand in the Italian market.

A.C. Milan players dribble from the rooftops with Toyo Tire

Four players from Italian football club A.C. Milan race against an Audi R8 through the team’s hometown in a new video released by Japanese tyre maker Toyo Tire & Rubber. The two-minute promotional video features Riccardo Montolivo, Jérémy Ménez, Adil Rami and Keisuke Honda from A.C. Milan competing against the enthusiastically-driven R8 in a city alley race, and Toyo promises a ‘surprise ending’ when the Stig-like character behind the wheel of the Audi finally removes his helmet. Autopromotec hails ‘remarkable increase in exhibitors’ for 2015 show

The organizers of Autopromotec 2015, the automotive equipment and aftermarket show to be held at the Bologna Trade Fair Center 20–24 May 2015, have reported a “remarkable” increase in exhibitor demand. According to the organizing company Promotec Spa, space in the halls devoted to lifting equipment, tyres and tyre equipment has already sold out, long before the official deadline of 31 October. Promotec also reports that there has been a “very positive” response from the hall devoted to spare parts.

Yokohama Rubber acquires Parker Hannifin’s Italian marine hose business

Yokohama Rubber has expanded its non-tyre business with the acquisition of Italian marine hose manufacturing and sales company Parker MHP S.r.l. from its US-based parent company Parker Hannifin Corporation. The Italian company’s name will be changed to Yokohama Industrial Products Italy S.r.l.

Trelleborg Wheel Systems outlines route to global agricultural tyre leadership

The agricultural tyre market appears particularly well suited towards specialised manufacturers; Trelleborg Wheel Systems acquired Pirelli’s agricultural business in 1999, with the branding switched between 2006 and 2010. Since acquiring various technologies from Pirelli, the Trelleborg Group has invested heavily in order to make its tyre and wheel operation a premium brand player in the agricultural and forestry tyre market. The Tivoli facility, with its buildings showing a manufacturing history dating back to the 1940s, but also incorporating the latest agricultural tyre building machinery, represents “a history full of innovation for farming professionals,” in president of the Agricultural and Forestry Tyres business unit, Paolo Pompei’s words.

Toyo kicks off as AC Milan sponsor

The start of Italy’s Serie A football league on Saturday marked the beginning of Toyo Tire & Rubber’s activities as an AC Milan premium sponsor. The tyre maker is supporting the top-flight Italian team for the 2014-2015 season, and as premium sponsor intends to “aggressively utilise” content featuring AC Milan in its advertising material. In addition to developing and launching a collection of branded items for its customers, Toyo says it is also producing video content that will highlight AC Milan’s star players. The team’s activities and match results will also be updated to the Toyo’s Facebook page and “On and Off the Field” Tumbler page.
