Kargro Battles High Stocks and 50% Lower Retread Output

Built on the pragmatic assertion that “tyres don’t last forever; they get worn” the Kargro Group has quite literally made it their business to make good use of what others throw away. Like other similar operations Kargo collects both passenger car and commercial vehicle casings, inspects them and determines whether they are suitable for re-use, can be retreaded or are destined for the shredder. What’s different is the scale. Kargro Group stores an average of 120,000 casings ready for export to any of 40 countries at any given time.

Sapphire Gains Treble ISO Certification

Sapphire Energy Recovery, the tyre recovery and waste processing company owned by Lafarge Cement, has gained BSI certification for three management system standards: quality, environment and health and safety. Certificates for ISO 9001 (for quality management), ISO 14001 (for environmental compliance) and OHSAS 18001 (for health and safety) were handed out to members of the Sapphire team by BSI representative Colin Rushmere at a recent ceremony held to mark the occasion at Lafarge Cement’s head office in Solihull.

Sapphire Energy Recovery is opening a new tyre chipping facility at Western Tyres' Avonmouth headquarters in the South West. The business is leasing land at the Western Tyres facility in order to provide a secure outlet for used tyres for its customers across the South West.

More than Just Rubber

No other tyres are submitted to as much stress as those fitted on earthmovers. As a result retreading these tyres requires specific experience and solutions, especially with regards to the development of the most appropriate compounds and tread patterns, says leading tread rubber, machinery and retread manufacturer Marangoni.

Earthmover and off-the-road tyres require compounds that have high resistance to mechanical stress and atmospheric agents, so as to guarantee the required working life. In many cases cut resistant compounds are needed, but at the same time the compounds must feature low hysteresis/heat generation (two technologically opposing characteristics when obtained using standard materials and processes). Consequently new reinforcing agents with specific characteristics need to be added.

Breaking Down NHTSA’s Tyre Fuel Efficiency Scheme

Last week NHTSA issued its 148-page long initial proposal for a national tyre fuel efficiency testing rating and education program – nearly two full years after it was mandated in the 2007 Energy Act. To be sure, developing even the first pass version was no easy task. While the core requirement was to create a simple, straightforward means to help consumers find the most fuel-efficient tyres, getting there will still take some doing…and leave a few people disappointed.

There are some interesting points in NHTSA’s proposal. For instance, it suggests that with the advent of this proposal NHTSA recommends doing away with the current UTQG system, saying that the new rating program would be a more effective alternative.

NHTSA also estimates that it would take between two and nine years to test every single passenger tyre SKU, so it will allow tyre makers to basically test one tyre within a family (make/model/size range) and use those ratings across the rest of that model. Even then, NHTSA experts only 25 per cent of replacement tyre to be labelled at the time the program would formally launch. (Tire Review/Akron)

Cooper Texarkana Plant Earns Environmental Certification

Cooper Tire & Rubber’s Texarkana facility, located in the US state of Arkansas, has been granted the IS0 14001 environmental management system certification. Adherence to the ISO 14001 standard, which specifies requirements for a facility’s environmental management system, is intended to help minimise a facility’s impact on the environment through the use of standardised processes and regular performance audits.

“Earning this certification demonstrates the commitment by our Texarkana plant to operating an environmentally friendly facility,” said Carl Montalbine, vice president of Global Quality, Operational Excellence and Information Technology. “Especially as all of us are trying to conserve energy, reduce waste and preserve the environment, we felt that attaining this ‘green’ standard was simply the right thing to do.”

Cooper Kenda Facility Ready for ISO Certification

Cooper Tire reports that Smithers Quality Assessments lead auditor Ricker Zoller recently conducted an ISO 9001:2000 stage one audit at its Cooper Kenda Tire facility in Kunshan, China. This stage one audit, the company adds, is comparable to the pre-certification audits that North American plants underwent in spring 2008 in preparation for their actual certification audits. The certification audit at Cooper Kenda Tire is scheduled for July.

Following the four-day inspection, the auditor commented that he found “no issues that would prevent Cooper Kenda Tire from obtaining its certification.” This positive feedback comes after half a year of preparation for ISO auditing, a time in which department leaders and employees have been engaged in establishing proper procedure documents. Cooper states that employees have developed all the required systems, such as document control, internal audit, corrective and preventive action and calibration systems.

Volkswagen 1st European OEM Supplied by Hankook Hungary

Volkswagen has become the recipient of Hankook’s first-ever OE delivery to a European vehicle manufacturer from its Dunaujvaros factory. The supply of Hungarian produced tyres to Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge in Hanover, Germany is taking place under an agreement to fit the Hankook product as original equipment on Volkswagen’s Transporter, Caravelle, Multivan and California van models.

Europe’s largest automobile manufacturer is kitting out the fifth generation of its “T5” van family with the size 215/65 R16C version of Hankook’s new Radial RA 28. Hankook describes the tyre to be fitted as a “specially balanced tyre perfectly suited to the variety of uses of such vehicles”, and notes it is exclusively supplied to Volkswagen in Germany.

Rajmahaal Geared Up for Expansion in Western Europe

Indian retreading equipment manufacturer Rajmahaal Tire Equipments sees itself in a position to expand its export programme into Western Europe. According to company managing director M.V.D Rajendran, Rajmahaal already sells autoclaves, buffing machines, spreaders and other products in Eastern Europe. Now, armed with a newly developed low-energy autoclave that can accommodate up to 24 tyres, it has its sights set on conquering all of Europe.

ContiTech Power Transmission Belts: Brand Products Give Certainty

Car maintenance has once again become a priority in the minds of vehicle owners because cars are being kept longer as a result of current economic conditions. And consumers are also paying more attention to prices at auto repair shops. Anyone trying to save on quality when buying power transmission belts, however, must expect to incur high follow-up costs in the event of belt failure – a warning the sales staff at repair shops should give to their customers.

BF SRL Offers New Designs

B.F.srl, the ISO 9001:2000 certified wheel balancing weight maker, is offering an increasingly wide range of balancing weights made from zinc, lead, steel and tin, which it exported to more than 50 countries throughout the world last year. Recent investments in technologically advanced plant and machinery, have resulted in the establishment of a new factory for plastic coating treatment and the introduction of adhesive weights in steel galvanized, plastic coated with epoxy powders of grey and black colour. The latter comes in response to the company’s “constant attention and curiosity” of what is new in the wheels field. Remog Widens Range of Coated Weights

Remog S.p.A, has widened the range of wheel balancing weights it offers, following the formation of a new plant for the plastic coated treatment of its products with epoxy powders. This plant supports Remog’s other site, which has been operating since 2000, and already has the capacity to cover at 100 per cent of the body of the weight. The new coating technology means the weights can now withstand certified 500 hours to salt fog test.

Infinity to Show 2 New Tyres

The focal point of Infinity’s 144 square metre stand at Autopromotec 2009 will be the brand’s two new products – the new INF 059 winter van tyre and the INF 200 on-road 4×4 tyre.

The INF 059 will be available from Autumn 2009 and will feature five products ranging in size from 14 to 16 inch diameters. According to company representatives, tt will complement the existing Infinity winter tyre range and will feature a distinctive asymmetric tread pattern and a “proven winter rubber compound.”
