More than 60 per cent of vehicles driving on Cyprus are doing so with the wrong tyre pressures, according to a study produced by non-governmental organisation (NGO) “Reaction Youth for the Prevention”. Looking specifically at trucks, the situation is even worse with 90 per cent running on the wrong pressures.
Following the news that PCL couplings will now no longer be gold in colour, Tyres & Accessories visited the company’s Sheffield manufacturing. After this – in order to get a more global perspective – T&A visited PCL’s China operation and interviewed local general manager Robert Wang. China is, of course, a key growth market for many in the automotive and automotive aftermarket industries who are seeking to capitalise on the country’s strong manufacturing base, huge population and growing middle class. PCL is no-different, having relatively recently established its Shanghai operation as a means of getting a foothold in China. However it is also a complex market where market saturation and counterfeiting are barriers to entry and development.

While switching from silver to gold is arguably an aesthetic improvement it is clearly a lot more than that. As we have seen there are clear environmental and ethical benefits (several times during T&A’s tour company representatives spoke of how the switch was simply the right thing to do from a number of perspectives). It is also about communicating both the change and the reasons for it. Indeed, it is now that the phased changeover is well underway, that the tough work really begins.
PCL says its Nexus nitrogen generation and tyre inflation solution will be taking centre stage at this year Brityex on Stand 63. The company’s innovative new system provides cost-effective nitrogen delivery hand in hand with PCL’s world-renowned digital inflation technology, giving a guaranteed inflation accuracy of ± 0.5%. The idea is that customers can benefit from superfast nitrogen inflation from their existing air supply, without needing to buy, store and handle expensive nitrogen bottles.
Michelin says it has helped nearly 5,000 motorists save fuel this summer as part of its annual Fill Up With Air campaign. The event has been touring the UK since May and shows drivers the importance of keeping tyres at the correct pressure. The tyre giant believes the campaign has reduced the annual CO2 emissions of participating drivers by around 145 tonnes, assuming the 4,753 drive an average of 12,000 miles per annum at 35mpg. These figures suggest those motorists would save more than 12,700 gallons of fuel and around £70,000 on fuel bills in addition to the increased wear and the added costs of replacing incorrectly inflated tyres more frequently.
