Lanxess Examining Options for Brazil Retreading Chemical Production

Some 18 million truck and bus tyres are said to be retreaded in North America each year and a further nine million in South America, and to meet growing demand for the raw materials used in retreading both within the region and worldwide, Lanxess’s Performance Butadiene Rubbers (PBR) business unit is “considering the possibility” of manufacturing ESBR-BMB (emulsion styrene-butadiene rubber black masterbatch) in Brazil in the future. Options for doing so at its Triunfo or Caxias production sites are currently being examined.

Apollo Tyres Co-Hosts First Indian CV Awards

In association with ‘CV’, a commercial vehicle themed magazine for the Indian market, Apollo Tyres has held the first dedicated awards for the commercial vehicle segment in India – the Apollo-CV Awards 2010. The awards ceremony took place on March 8, and a total of 23 awards were conferred upon vehicle and ancillary component manufacturers. The evening saw Tata Motors walk away with the two most significant awards – CV Maker of the Year and CV of the Year, honours bestowed upon the vehicle manufacturer for its Tata Prime 4028 S. The title of CV Man of the Year was conferred on Dr Abhay Firodia, chairman and managing director of Force Motors Limited.

Metro Tyres Expanding Capacity to Meet Growing Two-Wheeler Demand

India’s Metro Tyres is reportedly increasing its annual motorcycle tyre production capacity to 1.8 million units. According to the Press Trust of India, the company will invest Rs 500 million (₤7.2 million) in its Ludhiana, Punjab state plant, where capacity for tyres manufactured as part of a technical collaboration with Continental AG is currently 600,000 tyres per year. Expansion work is anticipated to be completed by April.

No European Plant for Apollo, Vredestein Plant Gets Nod

India’s Apollo Tyre has apparently dropped plans to build a new tire plant in Europe, and will instead turn its attention to expanding its Vredestein facility in the Netherlands, reports Tire Review.

JK Tyre Hail VW Scirocco Cup Prodigy

You may not have heard of him before, but tyre maker JK Tyre is backing Aditya Patel as a driving “prodigy and India’s most promising driver.” JK Tyre’s comments come in advance of the forthcoming VW Scirocco Cup that starts in April 2010 in Germany. 21-year old Aditya will also be the first Indian to drive a Green Racing car as the Scirocco runs on ERD Bio gas, something which is said to be global first.

JK Tyre, which has been supporting Aditya in his professional training and participation in various national and International motorsport events, is also one of his lead sponsors in this endeavor. The Scirocco Cup will be held as the partner series of the hugely popular DTM in its 2010 debut season. Staged as the most eco-friendly one-make championship in the world, the sporting equipment: the racing version of the Scirocco is powered by an innovative biogas engine that achieves an 80-per cent reduction of CO2 emissions compared with conventional engines.

Living and Breathing the Product

During the previous three years Alliance Tire has invested US$300 million in the company’s further development. This sizeable sum has been directed into several key projects. The highest profile of these, of course, has been last December’s acquisition of certain GPX assets, including the Galaxy and Primex OTR tyre brands. A specific focus has also been placed upon Alliance’s principal market of Europe: In December Alliance Tire Europe BV’s new headquarters was opened, and several weeks later Alliance Tire announced the appointment of a new president for the operation, former head of Goodyear industrial, farm and OTR tyre initiatives for the Middle East and Africa region, Manuel Pintado. Recently Tyres & Accessories paid Alliance Tire’s new European headquarters in Halsteren, the Netherlands a visit to hear Mr. Pintado’s views on Alliance’s recent activities and where the company plans to go from here.

Lanxess Jhagadia Plant Ready to Supply Tyre Industry Customers

The first phase of construction at the new Lanxess rubber chemical plant in Jhagadia, India has been completed. The German specialty chemicals firm reports production at the Gujarat state facility has begun following a building time of less than two years. The site will now supply India’s growing tyre and rubber industry and export markets with ‘Vulkanox’ brand antioxidants.

Global Carbon Black Demand to Rise 4.3% a Year till 2013

World carbon black demand is forecast to rise 4.3 per cent per year every year until 2013, according to research published by Bharat Books. The report suggests annual demand will reach 11.6 million metric tonnes in 2013 bolstered by a healthy global rubber market in the same period. 60 per cent of demand is said to come from tyre applications. Carbon black demand from the tyre sector is projected to increase 3.7 per cent a year through 2013 to 6.9 million metric tonnes.

Bekaert Tyre Cord Capacity to Reach 700,000 Tons by Year’s End

Belgium steel cord manufacturer Bekaert states that capacity increases in China, India and Russia, and the planned integration of the tyre Bridgestone tyre cord plants (in Sardinia, Italy and in Huizhou, China) acquired earlier this year will lift the company’s total tyre cord capacity from its present level of 625,000 tons to an estimated 700,000 tons by the end of 2010. The bulk of this increase will occur in China, where capacity will rise from its current level of 350,000 tons to 400,000 tons.

Apollo Completes Vehicle Dynamics Workshop in Chennai

Indian manufacturer Apollo Tyres has completed its second Vehicle Dynamics Workshop in the southern Indian city of Chennai. Apollo began the Workshop two years ago as a biannual platform for auto and tyre-makers, tyre testing authorities and homologation bodies to discuss vehicle dynamics, its facets, complexities, issues being faced and ways and means of addressing them. The company says the Workshop comes at a time when regulations across the world are being tightened, and both car and tyre makers are actively seeking ways to bring out products, which meet customer needs of safety, fuel efficiency, price and comfort while applying environmentally safe options.

Indian Anti-Dumping Body Recommends Hefty TBR Duty

The Press Trust of India writes that the country’s government is “likely” to implement an anti-dumping duty on bus and truck radials imported from China and Thailand. The Commerce Ministry’s Directorate General of Anti-dumping and Allied Duties (DGAD), it reports, has recommended a US$90 duty per tyre.

Domestic Radial Capacity, Import Duties a Problem for Indian Vehicle Makers

It appears tyre manufacturers in India do not see eye to eye with the country’s vehicle manufacturers on the subject of anti-dumping duties. These tariffs, introduced in January and applied to imports of radial tyres from China, have been criticised by major automakers such as Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland, who say plans to expand have been affected by a shortfall in commercial vehicle radial capacity within India.

Controlling Costs Through Pre-Owned Solutions

Israel based supplier of pre-owned tyre and rubber industry machinery Pelmar Engineering Ltd. recently announced its Group Board has nominated Hagai Peled to take over the role of managing director, a position he commences following “five years of successful management positions in various departments.” In February the son of company founder Jacob Peled visited Germany to attend both the Tire Technology Expo and a meeting of Pelmar Engineering managers from around the world. During the exhibition he gave an overview of Pelmar’s global business and the options it provides for tyre businesses wishing to set up or expand.

India’s ATMA Seeking a 7.5% Rubber Tariff

A memorandum sent by India’s Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA) to the nation’s finance ministry outlines the tyre industry’s hopes for a reduction in natural rubber duties. Reuters reports that the memorandum, sent in advance of the national budget, states “the customs duty on natural rubber should be reduced from 20 per cent to 7.5 per cent, lower than the duty on tyres.” At present natural rubber attracts a customs duty twice that of tyres, making imports more competitive than locally produced tyres.

CV Radial Shortage Causing OEM Headaches in India

India’s Tata Motors reports its commercial vehicle production has been reduced by between five and ten per cent since January due to a shortage of radial tyres and other key components. This disclosure follows one from Ashok Leyland, who was forced to decrease production by 20 per cent for similar reasons.
