Lockdown stops tyre production in India

The lockdown now in place across India is one of the most radical measures seen to date during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, tyre production has come to a standstill at plants across the country. While India’s government exempts the manufacture of “ essential commodities” from the three-week lockdown it hasn’t provided clarity as to what products it considers essential. Therefore it is unclear when tyre manufacture will recommence within the country.

Apollo Tyres suspends production at four plants in India

Several states across India have announced lockdowns in order to better deal with the COVID-19 outbreak, and as a result Apollo Tyres Ltd. has halted operations at its plants in Kalamassery & Perambra (Kerala), Limda (Gujarat) and Chennai (Tamil Nadu) until 31 March. In addition, employees in the company’s offices have been instructed to work from home.

Tribunal approves Ceat Specialty Tyres merger

Ceat Limited reports that the Mumbai Bench of India’s National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) approved the Scheme of Amalgamation for the merger of the wholly-owned subsidiary Ceat Specialty Tyres Limited with Ceat Limited. The NCLT granted approval on 13 March.

India’s ATMA appoints new chairman, vice chairman

The organisation representing India’s tyre makers has a new chairman, with KM Mammen being appointed to the role. Mammen, who is chairman and managing director of MRF Ltd., is joined in the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association’s (ATMA) leadership team by Anshuman Singhania as vice chairman. Singhania is a director at JK Tyre & Industries Ltd.

Phase 2 trial production starts at BKT’s carbon black plant

Balkrishna Industries Limited (BKT) reports that it commenced trial production for the second phase of its carbon black facility in Bhuj, India on 12 March. Trial production at the currently 80,000 tonne per annum facility began ahead of schedule, the tyre maker adds.

Ceat begins production at newest plant

Commercial production at Ceat Ltd.’s new production facility near Chennai, India began yesterday, reports the tyre maker. Ceat says production capacity at the plant in Sriperumbudur Taluka will now be “ramped up progressively in a phased manner” up to a daily capacity of 28,500 car tyres and 2,500 motorcycle tyres.

Tyre recovery prices could double

Tighter waste recovery practices in India will drive “a big increase in recovery costs across Europe and beyond”, according to industry body the Tyre Recovery Association (TRA). Together with similar moves in some other SE Asian countries, the TRA warns vehicle dismantlers and tyre retailers that disposal costs could “as much as double” in the coming weeks and months.

Yokohama develops tyre for Maruti Suzuki concept EV

India’s car market leader Maruti Suzuki has unveiled a new concept vehicle ahead of the Auto Expo 2020 show, which begins tomorrow. Called the Concept Futuro-e, the SUV coupe gives a taste of what can be expected from the car maker’s ‘Mission Green Million’ plan to sell a million low emission vehicles in the next few years. Yokohama has developed a BluEarth tyre for the concept.

India considering higher duties for imported tyres

The 2020 Budget that India is scheduled to present on 1 February is expected to include changes to basic customs or import duty on more than 300 products. Tyres are one of them, and prices for tyres imported into India may soon rise dramatically. In its recommendations to the country’s Ministry of Finance, India’s Commerce and Industry Ministry has proposed increasing customs duty on pneumatic tyres, now 10-15 per cent, to 40 per cent.

Apollo Tyres partners with truck manufacturer for India healthcare initiative

Under a new partnership with commercial vehicle manufacturer Ashok Leyland, Apollo Tyres will provide healthcare facilities to truckers at a major transport hub in southern India. The tyre maker describes this collaboration as “a unique, first of its kind partnership.”

Mahansaria Tyres comments on EATD acquisition

Commenting on its agreement in principle to buy a majority stake in European Agriculture Tyre Distributor (EATD), Mahansaria Tyres Private Limited (MTPL) states that it intends to build a global, market leading off-highway tyre business. MTPL describes the acquisition as its first step towards building its distribution network in Europe and developing EATD into “a leading” European distributor. EATD has also announced that it will distribute MTPL tyres in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland, along with continuing to act as a distributor for Tianli tyres.

EATD recently disclosed plans to bring a new investor on board, and when we spotted Yogesh Mahansaria visiting the distributor’s stand at Agritechnica 2019 the list of potential investor candidates suddenly became a whole lot shorter. Mahansaria is indeed the new investor; EATD confirms that Mahansaria Tyres Private Limited (MTPL) has reached an in-principle agreement to acquire a major stake in the company.

Bridgestone adds India to EMEA region

From 1 January 2020, Bridgestone’s India business will fall into the EMEA Strategic Business Unit (SBU), transferring from the China, Asia-Pacific SBU. As a result, Bridgestone Europe, Russia, Middle East and Africa (BSEMEA) will become Bridgestone Europe, Russia, Middle East, India and Africa (BSEMIA), one of four SBUs globally, alongside Bridgestone China, Asia-Pacific, Bridgestone Americas, and Bridgestone Japan. According to the company, the integration of Bridgestone India into EMEA comes as a result of Bridgestone EMEA’s “ongoing transformation capitalising on the opportunities digitalisation offers to pioneer mobility solutions that meet the needs of customers for convenience, efficiency and sustainability”.
