Apollo Tyres Ltd signs MoU with Tamil Nadu Government

Onkar S Kanwar, chairman and managing director of Apollo Tyres Ltd, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Tamil Nadu government to acquire 135 acres of land, in the Oragadam Industrial Park, 11 kilometres from Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. The company says that it plans to build a radial tyre production facility. The factory will initially produce 75 tonnes of tyres per day, rising to 250 tonnes or more over time, according to the company.

Samir Kumar Paul Appointed Dunlop India MD

Samir Kumar Paul has been appointed as the new managing director of Dunlop India. Following the acquisition of the company from the Chhabrias, company owner, Ruia, had brought Ashok Jajodia, Dipak Rudra, Narayan Prasad Agarwalla, and Sajid Khan onto its board. The company has taken steps to compile and reconcile accounts for 2001-02, after getting access to statutory and other relevant records from its erstwhile registered office at Dunlop House.

Pakistan Bans Indian Retread Imports

Pakistan has published a list of 38 items, which are banned from being imported into the country from India. Interestingly retreaded tyres and part-worn tyres feature on the list alongside a string of unsavoury items including: Cannabis, Opium, tanks, machine guns, automatic rifles and armoured vans! A number of more innocuous items including lambs, rabbits and freezers also feature on the list. The 2006 Import Policy Order issued by the Pakistani Ministry of Commerce lists 773 items that can be imported into Pakistan during the 2006/07 financial year. India has complained that the law is against the letter and spirit of the South Asia Free Trade (SAFTA) agreement, which came into force on 1 January 2006.

Stamford Tyres Establishes Indian Subsidiary

Stamford Tyres Distributors India Private Limited (Stamford Tyres India) was incorporated on 6 July 2005 with an authorized capital of 500,000 rupees (£5700) and will sell and distribute wheels and tyres to the Indian market.

India Proposes Quality Certification for Tyres

In a move that could remove the threat of cheap tyres imported from China, the government proposes to make quality certification compulsory for tyres manufactured and sold in India, says the Indian website of Business Standard. This would mean that only tyres that conform to the standard specified by the Bureau of Indian Standards can be sold and foreign tyres cannot be sold through local outlets.

Michelin Explores Indian OE Market

Michelin is keen to enter the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) segment of the Indian passenger car and truck markets, according to the Indian press. This was made clear in an article with The Hindu recently, in which Herve Dub, Chief Executive Officer, Michelin India Tyres Private Ltd. said, “We are in discussions with some OEMs. There will be some good news on this front in 12 months,” he added.

Ceat Ramping Up Radial Imports, Production

(Akron/Tire Review) Indian tiremaker Ceat say it will increase imports of radial truck tyres to 2,000 units per month within the next 18 months. Currently, Ceat imports some 500 tyres per month, produced for Ceat by Pirelli at its manufacturing plant in Turkey. “Seeing a gradual increase in demand for domestic radial truck tyres, we intend to step up our imports from Pirelli,” Ceat managing director Paras Chowdhary told Indian media.

Hayes Lemmerz Invests In India

Hayes Lemmerz is to build new facilities at its plant in Pune (200 kilometres south of Mumbai) where it currently produces steel truck wheels. The joint venture factory is 85 per cent owned by Hayes Lemmerz with Indian company Kalyani (one of the largest suppliers of automotive components, especially castings) as junior partner.

JK Industries MD Receives Doctorate

Mr Raghupati Singhania, vice chairman and managing director of JK Industries Limited has received an honorary doctorate in science at the seventeenth convocation of Mohanlal Sukhadia University at Udaipur by Her Excellency, Smt. Pratibha Patil, Governor of Rajasthan. The degree was conferred in recognition of Mr Singhania’s contributions towards encouraging education, training and research activities in Rubber and Allied industries in India.

Visitor Numbers Reach New High

Arguably the world’s largest tyre trade exhibition, Reifen Messe Essen 2006 was the biggest show in the history of the exhibition. The 24th show since the exhibition premiered in 1960, this year’s event attracted 17,100 tyre specialists (up 8 per cent) from over 80 countries, according to the organisers. In amongst the 473 suppliers (up 15 per cent) from 42 countries, a handful of UK wholesalers (Bond International, King’s Road Tyres, Kirkby Tyres, Treadsetters, and North West Tyres) led the way for the 22-strong British company contingent.

Ceat Tyres Plans to Expand Capacity

Ceat Tyres plans to expand production capacity at its Nashik radial tyre plant. Managing director Paras K. Chowdhary told local newspapers: “The Nashik plant has a production capacity of 40,000 tyres per month, which would go up to 65,000 after expansion.” The company plans to raise to capacity to 100,000 PCR tyres per month six months after the first phase is complete.

Elgitread Puts Europe on the Agenda

Since Elgitread (India) Ltd., the Indian supplier of retreading material, machinery, accessories and services, gained a new exclusive importer for the important German market (Hämmerling group), business in Europe is said to be getting better and better. Until four or five years ago Elgitread focussed most of its capacity on the development of the North and South American markets, explains K. Gopinath in an interview with Tyres & Accessories. This year’s Reifen Messe Essen saw Alliance Tire share its stand with exclusive German marketer, Bohnenkamp. With Alliance president Joseph Anglister leading the way, several of the specialist Israeli manufacturer’s managers were on hand to speak to visitors.

European sales and marketing manager, Rami Einav, confirms that the $85 million dollars the company has invested in recent years is now paying dividends, with Alliance becoming an attractive off-take partner for larger companies. This is particularly important when you consider that the company’s 900 highly productive employees work around the clock, 363/364 days a year.

Apollo Tyres “Disappointed at Misleading Story”

A story in the Business Standard in India, and mentioned on this website yesterday, has provoked a reply from Mr. Sunam Sarkar Chief, Corporate Strategy & Marketing for Apollo Tyres. The headline was “Apollo Tyres to Stop Making Radials in India” and Mr. Sarkar has written to the publication, saying he was “quite disappointed” in the story, which he describes as “misleading in the way it represents the facts” and with a headline that is “completely erroneous.” Mr Sarkar goes on: “There is no plan to stop making radials in India, rather we are increasing capacity. The specific fact that we discussed was the possible sourcing of low volume products from our South African facilities, so that our plant in Baroda can produce more of the high volume sizes. “The quote that ‘Apollo currently manufactures 200 radial tyres a month’ is completely untrue. We are currently manufacturing more than 7,000 radials per day, with plans to increase to 10,000 radials per day very shortly. While it is correct that we are exploring the replacement of South African manufactured cross-ply tyres with Indian ones, the important aspect of that strategy that does not come through in the story is that this production in South Africa will be replaced with increased production of truck radial tyres.”
