Indian Tyremakers to Import 25,000 Tonnes of Rubber

Indian tyre manufacturers will have to import 25,000 tonnes of natural rubber in the six months between April and September, the Hindu Business Line has reported. The imports come after a six month lull, when shipments into the country came to a halt.

“Tyre companies are importing basically since we anticipate shortage of rubber. Contracts have been signed and consignments will begin arriving from April onwards,” said Mr D Ravindran, director-general, Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association, the apex body of tyre makers in the country.

Titan CEO Get Political

(Akron/Tire Review – Quincy Herald-Whig) Morry Taylor, who created a stir when he ran for president in 1996, is shaking things up again. This time, the president and CEO of Quincy-based Titan International took out a full-page ad 2 February in USA Today calling on Americans to demand common-sense solutions to some of the problems facing this country.

The top of the ad reads in bold print: “Americans are you stupid? I don’t think we are, but politicians, bureaucrats and the intelligent elite think so.” Taylor used the ad as a platform to express his views on a variety of issues he feels are being mishandled by the nation’s leadership.

Steelworkers Angry Over Michelin Plant Closure

(Akron/Tire Review) As expected, United Steelworkers officials in Canada and the US reacted bitterly to the news that Michelin North America (MNA) was planning to close its 44-year-old broadline tyre plant in Kitchener, Ontario,

“It is outrageous that the company has never discussed alternatives with the union and simply dropped a bomb on the whole city,” said Wayne Fraser, USW’s Ontario/Atlantic director. “It is a mean-spirited, terrible way to treat workers, their families and the whole community.”

CITExpo Can Celebrate Successful Breakthrough

When the China International Tire Expo (CITExpo) opened its gates for the second time in 2004, it was already considered to be the potential Chinese tyre show of the future. It appears these estimations were well founded now that the third show in December has reached a size, which makes it the biggest show of its kind in East and South-East Asia. CITExpo even had to move into a different venue in order to accommodate its 150 exhibitors. Overall more than 5,800 visitors have registered with the organisers; two thirds came from abroad and the growing number of foreign exhibitors emphasises the increasingly open Chinese tyre market.

To the organisers of the China International Tire Expo the positive developments of the show have been much more than just good luck. “Most industry experts know our exhibition by now,” says Wilko Fong. The managing director of Reliable International Exhibition Services Co., Ltd., the organising company from Beijing, firmly believes that many of the current exhibitors have already taken part in earlier shows as visitors in order to find out how the land lies. Only now this wait-and-see-approach has actually paid off for the Shanghai CITExpo, with the latest event taking place in the Everbright Convention & Exhibition Center in downtown Shanghai.

India Begins Anti-Dumping Probe on Chinese, Thai Tyre Imports

India has initiated anti-dumping investigations against imports of bus and truck tyres from China and Thailand, The Hindu newspaper has reported. The announcement follows a complaint filed by the industry tyre industry association ATMA alleging market “dumping.” The Directorate General of Anti-Dumping and Allied Duties will the investigate the period between 1 April 2004 to 30 June 30 2005, it said.

Australia: Bridgestone Says Imports Affecting Domestic Sales

Bridgestone Australia Ltd says sales of locally made tyres remain under intense pressure from cheap imports. The Australian wing of the Tokyo-based company reported a 10 per cent rise in annual net profit to AUS$10.30 million for 2005 (£4.38 million, 6.38 million euros).

Apollo Sets its Sights on Dunlop Zimbabwe

Life has been hard for Dunlop Zimbabwe in recent months, now the company is being targeted for takeover by India’s Apollo Tyres, it has emerged. Dunlop International CEO Mark Hankinson is expected to travel to Harare in the next two weeks, the Zimbabwe Financial Gazette reported. Hankinson, whose group controls 75 per cent of Dunlop Zimbabwe is quoted as saying “We are talking to a number of people.”

Aftermarket parts supplier Motaquip has warned that the flood of ‘bargain batteries’ into the EU from Asian manufacturers pose a direct threat to a vehicle’s starting capability and could invalidate manufacturer vehicle warranties.

Last year 6 million vehicles were sold on the Chinese market, making China the world’s second largest auto market. According to a Reuters report, China produced more vehicles than third-place Japan, but is still behind the US which remains the world’s largest market.

Tyre Importers Accused of ‘Dumping’ In India

The Indian tyre lobby has convinced the government to initiate anti-dumping proceedings against imports from China and Thailand. Tyre makers allege that over 35,000 bus and truck tyres are being imported from China and Thailand every month at huge discounts compared to global and domestic prices, India’s Economic Times reported.

Record US Tyre Shipments

Passenger car replacement tyre shipments are expected to reach a record total of 205 million units this year, according to the latest RMA figures. The previous record was 198.9 million units, set in 2000. This will be the first time shipments have exceeded 200 million units in any given year. Similarly, tyre shipments for the combined original equipment (OE) and replacement consumer and commercial sectors are expected to increase by 2.2 per cent compared to 2004 as a result of continued steady economic growth.

Michelin Celebrates 100 Years in the UK

On 12 May this year, an exclusive gala dinner was held at Forbes House in London, commemorating 100 years of Michelin in the UK. Special guest at the event was Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, patron of the Transaid charity, which aims to promote mobility in Africa and of which Michelin is a founder.

“NR Price Rise has Cost Indian Tyre Industry 8.8 billion Rupees a Year”

(India/Rubber Asia) With annual consumption by the Indian tyre industry of over 400,000 tonnes of natural rubber (NR), “a price increase of just 1 a kilogram, imposes an annual financial burden of over 400 million rupees on us,” says Paras K Chowdhary, CMD of Ceat Tyres and chairman of Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA) of India.

The average price of NR has gone up from 39.17 rupees/kilo in 2002-03 to 63 rupees in 2005-06 (October) — an increase of 23 a kilo in about three years. This translates into about 8,800 million rupees annual financial burden on the Indian tyre makers, he said. (1$ = about 44 rupees).

Bosch Plans Major Chinese Expansion

At the opening of a new development and manufacturing facility in Wuxi, China, Franz Fehrenbach, the Chairman of the Bosch Group Board of Management, announced intentions to significantly expand activities into the region.

The number of Bosch manufacturing facilities in the People’s Republic of China has doubled to 20 in the past five years. At the end of 2004, Bosch had invested some 550 million euros in the establishment and expansion of activities. The company now plans to invest a further 650 million euros during the next two years across the country. “Bosch has a strong focus on China. We see it as a core country for our business in the entire Asia-Pacific region” explained Fehrenbach.
