Question of the Month: Retreading

Trucking Along Nicely

Although demand for road freight transport in Europe is predicted to increase substantially by 2020, the road ahead looks difficult for many established transport companies. Spiralling fuel prices, increased competition following enlargement of the EU and stricter environmental and safety legislation are squeezing margins. As a result price and overall economy are as important as ever for truck tyre consumers. India Imposes Duty on Nylon Imports

The Indian finance ministry has introduced anti-dumping duty on nylon filament yarn and nylon tyre cord imported from China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Korea. According to the Directorate General of Anti Dumping and Allied Duties (DGAD), these items have been exported to India at artificially low prices. Importers of nylon filament yarn from China will have to pay a duty of Rs 63 (1.06 euros) per kg, but importers from Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and South Korea have been hit harder, paying Rs 77 (1.29 euros) per kg. The DGAD recommended that the finance ministry introduced duties on synthetic fabrics, saying that the Indian industry had suffered material losses because of dumping by exporters from these six countries, as the market for synthetic textiles in India continues to grow.

Goodyear Dunlop Launches Legal Campaign Against Asian and African ‘Dunlop’ Tyres

Goodyear Dunlop Tyres UK Limited has launched a campaign which it says aims to “protect UK customers from unknowingly buying tyres that were not designed for road conditions in this market.” The campaign targets Asian and African manufactured tyres bearing the Dunlop and SP trademarks, but designed for their local markets, and not imported or recommended by the UK company. The company has issued the first of a series of claims against importers and distributors dealing in unauthorised Dunlop tyres. The claim was issued in the English High Court 1 September.

Iranian Market Produced 32.3 million Tyres Year-to-March

Khosrow Mahmoudian, secretary of the Iranian Tire Industry Guild Association, has told reporters that the industry produced 32.3 million tyres, weighing 221,206 tons, in the year to March 2006, according to Moj news agency.

Indian Government to Make ISI Mark Mandatory

Luxury car imports into India could slow down after the Indian government circulated plans to require all replacement and OE tyres to bear the ISI mark. A draft circular for the new regulation has already been issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards and the rule is expected to take effect in the next 40 to 60 days.

Pirelli UK Promotes Truck Tyre Business

The role of introducing Pirelli’s “Truck Tyres in Revolution” slogan fell to UK managing director, Dominic Sandivasci. “When you think of Pirelli, truck tyres is not the first image that comes to mind. That’s about to change,” he explained. Why now? “Because we’re ready,” comes the reply. According to Sandivasci the company known as the “Giorgio Armani of the tyre industry” is now poised to attack the truck replacement market and go for growth. In short the Italian manufacturer is looking for “ways of working that go beyond existing partnerships.” And this basically means rejuvenating its position in the truck tyre market. One way the company is seeking to achieve this is by transferring the success of its Pirelli driver scheme into the truck arena, while another is the launching a new online tyre management system – B2Fleet.

Pakistan Bans Indian Retread Imports

Pakistan has published a list of 38 items, which are banned from being imported into the country from India. Interestingly retreaded tyres and part-worn tyres feature on the list alongside a string of unsavoury items including: Cannabis, Opium, tanks, machine guns, automatic rifles and armoured vans! A number of more innocuous items including lambs, rabbits and freezers also feature on the list. The 2006 Import Policy Order issued by the Pakistani Ministry of Commerce lists 773 items that can be imported into Pakistan during the 2006/07 financial year. India has complained that the law is against the letter and spirit of the South Asia Free Trade (SAFTA) agreement, which came into force on 1 January 2006.

Chinese Auto Market Set to Boost Growth for Bridgestone

According to a report in the Shanghai Daily, the Bridgestone Corporation is looking towards the booming Chinese auto market to help maintain a 30 per cent growth in sales in China this year. “Chinese sales were up more than 30 per cent in 2005, and we expect the same increase this year,” said Hiromichi Odagiri, chief executive for Bridgestone China. “We have run quite well in the first half.”

Michelin Restructuring in US?

Michelin North America (MNA) says it will indefinitely layoff some 390 to 520 union workers at its 43-year-old Opelika, Alabama, tyre plant. The layoffs, said the company, are the result of a 30 per cent to 40 per cent production cutback at the plant which came about in response to the tough environment faced in the North American mass market segment.

Ceat Ramping Up Radial Imports, Production

(Akron/Tire Review) Indian tiremaker Ceat say it will increase imports of radial truck tyres to 2,000 units per month within the next 18 months. Currently, Ceat imports some 500 tyres per month, produced for Ceat by Pirelli at its manufacturing plant in Turkey. “Seeing a gradual increase in demand for domestic radial truck tyres, we intend to step up our imports from Pirelli,” Ceat managing director Paras Chowdhary told Indian media.

Apollo Tyres to Halt Indian Radial Production

Apollo Tyres is planning to import radial tyres for luxury cars like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Volkswagen from the company’s manufacturing facility in South Africa, rediff.com has reported. The local business news source reports that Indian radial production could halt at some point in the coming months.

With the implementation of the tyre landfill ban rapidly approaching and following the publication of ETRMA’s (European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturer’s Association) first comprehensive report on end-of-life tyre management, Tyres & Accessories takes a look at the findings and reports on the development of the UK’s free market system, publishing the most recent pan-European data on this segment.

While the ETRMA (in its former guise as BLIC) has made European end-of-life tyre (ELT) figures available for some time, this year is the first time the newly re-formed association has given such a detailed overview of the EU15 and enlarged European tyre recovery and recycling business.

Retreading Companies Remain Confident

The size of today’s Russian truck tyre market is about 12 million units per year. Together with improving road infrastructure – in particular in urban areas – and the increasing importance of Western products and technology, the retreading industry too is moving ahead in Russia. It is not only the demand for retreaded truck tyres, which is growing, but also the demand for truck tyres that were retreaded in Russia and other former Soviet states. But one problem remains: in general casings have to be imported because Russian-made truck tyres are not good enough quality to be retreaded, say most market experts.
