Low performing car tyres illegal from 1 May 2021

On 7 August the government shared some results from its recent type approval consultation. That four-week consultation period came to an end on 26 June 2020 and sought views from across the automotive industry relating to what statutory instrument should supersede European type approval Regulation (EU) 2018/858, which covers new vehicle safety. The result? Low performing car tyres and van tyres will be illegal from 1 May 2021. The government type approval consultation supports 30-month grace period for running down such stocks. And OBD ports will remain open for independent garages to access repair and maintenance information.

IAAF told ‘no plans for vehicle scrappage scheme’

The Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF) has received confirmation from BEIS (Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy) that the government has no plans to introduce a vehicle scrappage scheme.

End of MOT extension ‘will make the roads safer’ – IAAF

IAAF praises sector as it fights to overhaul MOT extension

The IAAF is continuing to call for the MOT extension to be scrapped and has written to government to get the decision overturned. In various communications with DVSA and Department for Transport, IAAF chief executive, Wendy Williamson said the decision to extend the MOT “will inevitably have a serious impact on road safety as road worthiness can alter greatly during this period. There is also the obvious concern that due to this postponement there could be thousands of vehicles on the road that are dangerous and unroadworthy.”

The Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF) has said the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency’s (DVSA) decision to extend MOTs for a six-month period causes “huge challenges” for the sector, arguing that the industry needs to ensure vehicles continue to be kept safe in these challenging times.

Aftermarket suppliers can remain open in Covid-19 lockdown

The Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation has gained clarification from government that businesses in the automotive aftermarket supplying garages, namely motor factors and suppliers, can remain open during the Covid-19 lockdown. Garages are exempt from the enforced closure of retailers, but motor factors can stay open in order to supply workshops who continue to support logistics providers, local councils, blue light services and key workers.

‘Best event for years’ – IAAF Annual Awards & Dinner 2019 a roaring success

Praise has been heaped on IAAF’s Annual Awards & Dinner 2019, with many calling it the Federation’s “best event for years.” The sell-out event, held for the third year running at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Milton Keynes and sponsored by Alliance Automotive UK (AAUK), saw around 600 guests in attendance, uniting the aftermarket as it gathered under one roof for a special evening of plaudits and entertainment.

Since the launch of the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) Crime and Enforcement Report 2018 -2019, the already high level of interest and concern on the subject of counterfeit replacement vehicle parts, has become even greater. The problem is complicated further by the increase in the number of customer supplied parts that independent workshops are being asked to fit and the difficulty they face in determining their origin.
